The facial expression of Contempt is debatably the most destructive of the 7 universal #facialexpressions. It often appears on the face when a person feels moral superiority over another - be that political, ethical, hierarchical, or intelligence, to name a few. It's an incredibly toxic emotion and can be very painful for the receiver of contempt. On the other hand, the person showing contempt may feel good about themselves, as they see themselves as superior to the person they are showing contempt; however, is any feeling of superiority healthy?
When learning to read #bodylanguage, verbal and #non-verbal behaviour, the face is one of the core channels to focus on. There is so much information you can gather from facial expressions alone.

So... This really sucks but I see this expression used on me all the time. Dating, people I'm having a casual conversation with, ect. It kind of makes me sick knowing that they feel so superior to me, especially when I am opening up and trying to have a heart felt conversation. I've learned about this a long time ago but more recently I have been seeing it EVERYWHERE. I'm going to start scrunching my face and doing the disgust expression.

The dating game is never easy is it?... That said, I wouldn't beat yourself up about seeing this expression on others. In many ways it a reflection on them, not you. Of course if you are saying something truly offensive and someone flashes contempt, then maybe there is something to think about, but it doesn't sound like that is the case for you. That being the case, maybe that makes them the a**hole? 👀 Also, worth keeping in mind, just because you see this expression doesn't necessarily mean contempt is directed at you. What you said may have triggered a memory or reminded them of particular person... indeed it may not be contempt at all, and they just moved their face in weird way 🤷‍♂️ If you do ever want to escape a bad date though, a disgust expression is a good way to go about it : )

Yeah it's a useful one to know Nicky... not just for seeing it in others, but becoming aware of when you may be displaying it yourself

I recently explored your Udemy course and noticed the absence of reviews despite a considerable student base. I am eager to provide a positive review to boost your course's visibility and potentially drive sales.

I would like to discuss how one can address when this expression (and eye rolls) shows up occasionally from close relatives, friends and partner. From what I have read online, people recommend to distance oneself, to ignore or even to leave the relationship entirely. Is it always the case? (Assuming there's no issue with the nerves/muscles) Also, I used to be a very shy person, to the point where smiling felt embarassing and I may have appeared contemptuous at times.

Hi Paulo! It can hurt to see contempt from others, especially those we are close to. That being said, I do not see it as a reason to lose friends/relationships. If anything, it's an opportunity to explore differences and better understand each other. Everyone is guilty of showing contempt, even to the ones we love, it does not mean we love them any less. Someone having the feeling of superiority could be more to do with their shortcomings, than your own. My advice, don't sweat the small the stuff. Let it go. And should you ever feel contempt, ask yourself why. Is it because you jumped streight to judgment? Could it be healthier to be more curious instead? As for your asymmetrical smile... That's just baseline behaviour. Anyone who knows you well will recognise this I'm sure, and if anyone who doesn't know you judges it wrong... well, that's on them. I hope that helps Paulo, Harry - EIA Team.
