I'm watching this looking for ways to deal with looking at others with contempt, being reflective. I find it extremely hard dealing with family particularly that will never reflect, never consider, only make their perception the reality. Contempt helps me cope with their abusive behaviours.

Brooks book was one of the most significant books I read in last few years. Brooks offers a social science perspective on polarization with clear, practical suggestions for how to deal with it. I draw from its wisdom on a regular basis!

I agree with this in theory but I firmly believe contempt is an important, survival emotion that has its purpose. It's problematic if you have contempt for someone who doesn't share the same ideas as you. Contempt, in this case, is inappropriately applied because we should be able to accommodate other people's ideas. It's perfectly natural to have contempt for someone who is puosefully out to harm you and consistently acts in bad faith. Contempt is appropriate when you are physically or mentally harmed. To 'have' contempt is very different to 'holding' someone in contempt. When woman have contempt it means you are 'dismissed'. When men have contempt what they are saying is ' this isn't working anymore' or 'having contact with you is not safe and a threat to my survival ". I believe contempt, when applied appropriately, is a very important and valuable emotion. Xxx

Hatred and Contempt are always choices, never compulsions. We can find many reasons to hate someone or something, but it is just as easy to find reasons not to. That choice we make as individuals, says more about who we are than the object of our hatred and is reflection of our values and priorities.

I have a lot of experience with contempt. And I do know the antidote and caution that is it rather hard to do. Familiarity breeds contempt but can be overruled with extreme etiquette. Sometimes it feels like it will never be repaired but it can be entirely rebooted with a full reformat and you don't even have to tell the other person. Admittedly, there has to be a lot of motivation but it can be done. (HHDL of course)

I have treated only one person in my life with contempt. She was a frenemy sort of. I always made my feelings to her about her behaviour clear but we still had a friendship. She used to gossip about people behind their backs then be good to them in person. She always needed things from other people and she was needy. Looking back I guess I thought she was weak and felt the need to condemn her but I was and still am no better than her. I want to get rid of this contempt feeling but don't know where to start...

Sounds like great advice.You are asking people to take the narrow path. Very challenging in times where people have hardened hearts. Not impossible. I will try to do this and be an example.

“Heavenly Father, I know that I have broken your laws and my sins have separated me from you. I am truly sorry, and now I want to turn away from my past sinful life toward you. Please forgive me, and help me avoid sinning again. I believe that your son, Jesus Christ died for my sins, was resurrected from the dead, is alive, and hears my prayer. I invite Jesus to become the Lord of my life, to rule and reign in my heart from this day forward. Please send your Holy Spirit to help me obey You, and to do Your will for the rest of my life. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen

The problem I'm seeing is that no matter how carefully and tactfully one articulates a political position they are often met with immidiate contempt as the reflex course of a seemingly bully mentality. It appears all to clearly that the motive behind the contempt is clearly to silence a position they appear to be without the intellectual capacity to argue.. One can exercise all the kindness they can find within themselves in the face of, or despite the contempt but all that is required to receive another round of insults is the sharing of another opinion that a manipulative person doesn't want to hear or is without the care or capacity to address. Contempt scars and eventually it appears we have to seperate ourselves from those who resort to ad hominem attacks as a regular argumentive tactic. Its difficult to accept the loss of friends and also the ego is fully aware the person slinging insults will claim your absence as an indicator of their righteousness rather than recognize theyre just an asshole. How do we tolerate intolerance? At what point is it ok to walk away from contemptious people with contemptious thoughts about them.

I see my friends being driven to extreme tribalism by social media, which is the source of contempt. You are fighting Facebook's algorithm's here, as well as Google's for good measure (i.e., RU-vid). Unless your intervention addresses this source effectively, you don't have a chance.

I've done a lot of good work with this over the years, but when people will happily lock you in your house indefinitely and shun you from society for making personal medical determinations, it's very hard.

This could definitely work, but America needs to rid itself of white supremacy and racism. As one person of Negeo blood, I find that contempt has been nurtured to keep people of color on the edge and defensive. When America handles its racist history and continued blindness against the people harmed so badly here in this land, then perhaps collective healing will happen. However it seems this exercise is only useful in personal situations and holds no value in the political and systemic institutions of racism in America. That's really too bad because what is going to end America is her consistent stubbornness to address the elephant in the room and deal the issue that has torn this country apart by design. Now, tell me how do I as a Negro always facing racism and fearful if this is the day a white person takes my life and recieves a badge for doing so is to love my enemy???Oh how I want to heal, and once believed I could, that my people could...now I wonder if healing is even possible in the land of our captivity. End racism, end white supremacy, end injustice, then contempt will disappear on many levels.

Mr. Brooks, the culture of contempt has deep European roots. Look at the Beaumarchais' court battle and his Mèmoires contre Goezman! Beaumarchais was thrown to prison, his whole life was disrupted, and his only weapon to defend himself was that 4-part pamphlet where Beaumarchais exposed his enemy in such light that it provoked public contempt for Goezman. As a result, Goezman was removed from his city hall job. Contempt is sometimes the only weapon available to those who are overpowered by the wicked ones, by the false witnesses, by the people who speculate on political correctness. Contempt is often a life-saving alternative to a spontaneous outburst of anger and violence!

Thank you, But listen to what I'm saying to you rationality with open minded; In fact, there are many contradictions between the verses in the bible, in a verse Jesus preached "love your enemy" ..that's good, however when we pring the following verses that are in the same bible, here's the great problem, so open your hand so as to balance between the contradicted verses (peace vs killing): In Matthew 10:34 (KJV) "Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword” In SAMUEL 15:3 "Now go and strike Amalek and completely destroy everything that they have; do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey" What?! Killing child and infant!! I'm I awaken? Sure this not Jesus's sayings, so who? Don't say it's the God of old testament because it's getting worse..!! Sure you have no answer dear friend? Wow what love you'r talking about? Answer rationality? As Muslims we love Jesus and we believe in him as beloved prophet and servent of God Allah (the Father) not as devine bring. And we knew from the Quran which is the final testament from the God that the Christians didn't understand the message of Jesus peace be upon him, where many verses in the bible were changed by the authors, hence jesus's message was changed so the real Gosbel of jesus which believe is a light of guidance is no more. --- Here's sincere message to the honest Christians--- May the God guide the honest Christians to Islam, why? Because they can really understand what Jesus peace be upon wanted to tell them. Plesee see chapter of Mary in the Quran especially the verse 16, so be open minded brothers and sisters: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vxJFZgLC5b4.html Thanks

Sort of sad he thinks a book is going to change things. I mean, maybe, but I think you'd have to change human nature -- social media just exacerbated divisions that were always there. You think the era of "Red-Scares", genocide in Europe, and Japanese internment that people didn't have contempt. What might be sadder is that only 2700 people have clicked here so far. Not sure what the official NYT numbers are for the op-ed, but this click through is pretty low in light of their readership. Glad ACB has something to do though. One point though -- am left of center and rarely have "contempt" for the left -- but in my time, they have been wrong about the economic effects of: 1) Taxing the wealthy (Bill Clinton's taxes didn't hurt the economy 2) The Iraq War (trillions for what exactly and where are the WMD? 3) Financial de-regulation (although Bill liked that too) -- and the banks literally nearly destroying the economic system by not behaving responsibly and 4) Obamacare -- didn't lead to widespread economic chaos and depression and really only improved health care access for millions (might have been too expensive for what we gained, but that was not their argument). As much as I disagree with Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz I hope for their success since it's our country's success if they are right. That being said, ACB is hoping a book, an occasional newspaper column, and low production videos are going to change things. I have much more concern for your sanity than I do contempt for him.

@@rafaelbarata5289 Yep. I'm not decent, by any means- but I've never experienced anything *other* than contempt from so called "decent" people. From my point of view, most Americans fall into one of two groups- sexual liberals or fiscal liberals. The rest of us are traditional Catholics, and we look down with contempt on EVERYBODY, including ourselves, for there are no living human beings that are not sinners. So I'm wondering where you find any decent people left after the last 80 years worth of cultural and moral disruption.
@rafaelbarata5289
@rafaelbarata5289 5 лет назад
Theodore Seeber well my friend, I would try to be decent day by day. What we have to understand is that everyone is a human being and everyone has their own opinion based on their upbringing and genetics. We have to respect those opinions because that allows us to talk our differences through and see if we can find a idle ground or prove the other persons argument wrong. We can’t do that screaming at the top of our lungs.
