I do think that people tend to over sanitize and we’re so worried about germs, etc. even for ourselves people over sanitize. But as a ball python owner, I do think it’s best at least in my opinion to deep clean the cage completely at least every three or four months just because requires such a humid environment for a ball python and I don’t think it’s a great combination to have such high humidity in a confined space where they are defecating etc no matter how well you spot clean those remnants can start to multiply in a humid confined space. that wouldn’t be happening out in nature it would be humid, but it wouldn’t be a confined space that they’re stuck in where germs can just multiply and get out of control. But for other species that require less humidity, I think the less frequent deep cleaning is fine as long as you’re on top of the spot cleaning.

Congratulations! Re co-habbing: when I was in my teens I used to visit the reptile house at London zoo every week. They had many enclosures with more than one snake: the puff adder enclosure was really big, and there were about six snakes in there.

I think I brought this up on the last time Rex was on but I have my male tegu that sleeps right next to my red foot tortoise. I love interacting with all my animals from my green tree python my Nile monitor to my sun conure and my chinchilla , I have an amazing bond with all 20+ animals and other than 1 ball python I could hand off to a child .

Great to hear from Rex after a while (lost track not having tiktok and Instagram)! When I say that 100% of ideas mentioned in this episode align with my mindset, I don't think I am exaggerating... Be it cohabitation rules, bonding process, keeping ideas, sanitation approach, nature perception, you name it. Thanks for having Rex on the show again.

My big 7 ft Papuan Carpet has bitten me twice, both times he missed the rat and grabbed my hand, but he never stayed on me, immediately he releases his bite and then seems to act like he knows he did something wrong.

I had a corn snake I could feed by hand. He would take the mouse right out of my hand and never bite me. I would never try to do that with my ball python, but the python also sees heat more than he uses his eyes so my hand would be toast lol. I miss that corn. The dude passed away last year from old age and cancer. He was the biggest corn I had seen so I always wondered if he was a rat snake mix or something.

Awesome 180p security swamp footage lol on Rex's side. Jokes aside very cool episode. Taylor's is a little credibility in his argument during the enclosure section because he's comparing apples to oranges not apples to apples but I digress. Still a pretty cool take on cohabing

I will say, most cat breeds are not actually domesticated. Which is why the babies of strays, who never met humans, are still terrified of humans. Cats like Maincoon, Forestcats, etc where specifically breed to like humans and were domesticated to be with humans. Most cat breeds existed as tools to just hunt mice outside. Most breeds run and hide from strangers even when they are inside pets, even though humans never hurt them. They still only like their humans, they are terrified of strange humans. Maincoons as a breed like strangers too. Breed makes a huge difference. In dogs too. Akita usually hate strange humans. Huskies love all humans (and thus make really bad guard dogs lmao). Corn snakes, from my experience, tend to be genuinly interested in humans the instant they are born. Some snake breeds are born afraid of people. All that said, in my lifetime 'scientists' went from claiming fish were mindless, emotionless zombies and claiming birds were stupid, to saying some birda are geniuses and fish are super complex. It took pet owners to prove it wrong. Right now they claim snakes are incapable of bonding. My experience with snake indicates that is simply not true, and I know in the next 20 years they will finally say what most of them who have them as pets already know.

I will completely agree, puppies and kittens need to be acclimated to humans or they might as well be wild.

A bit of a ramble on the cats being afraid: Regards cats acting afraid, most of the house cats we interact have been sterilized -- and that's a relatively new practice as far as I can tell. It changes their behaviour from what they'd be naturally, and for cats makes their behaviour better for us (less clear for dogs). Gonadectomy/full spay/neuter has been linked to anx.ie.ty and dep.ressi.on in multiple species long term. Humans experience the issue also -- "low testestrone" and menupause for example, and thus main reason why there's been quite a few medical studies in animals on this. However, I cannot find any studies in cats, but have seen mentions of less brace/courages and lowered energy in cat studies. Looking at the described behaviour changes, it's possible the reason why they're better behaviour for humans when gonadectomized is because of increased need of companionship due to reduced mental health. The studies in dogs are mixed, but several longer term ones have seen increased behaviour issues associated with anx.i.ety in gonadectomized dogs, tho for female dogs, partially due to "permnent false pregnancy" issue that happens due to timing of spay too close to heat cycle. There's a lot of issues in pet studies around account for socioecomic factors (that likely means increased issues in intact dogs due to increased risks of more likely living in a struggling household with less resources/reduced owners time spent at home/increased time spent outside/etc ). Less overall studies in cats on this, but they at least consider income a bit more often (a household of five can have the same income of household of 2, but have be at different level of struggle, and that level of struggle effects access to pet sterilization) As a trans person, I have some more direct familiarity with hormones and mental health, and the way most of the veterinary industry approaches hormones is just ... really outdated. Likely due to combination of stress/heartache of overpopulation ; that it can improve behaviour for us; the needs of the livestock industry, and lingering religious beliefs about animals and s.ex and whether non-reproductive sex is useful to have access to. I think that industry need to move towards a more informed consent model like human health is going to, and people should be aware of the full effects of medical care, and be provided options (like include vastecomy, tubal ligation, and ovary sparing spay for sterilization). At least for female cats, full spay does increase lifespan. Less clear for dogs, particular large breed dogs -- example of socioeconomic factors issues: Two of drivers for lower lifespan of intact dogs seen in some studies that didn't assess income are trauma and infection... two risks increased by increased time spent outside. Veterinary websites sometimes quote the lifespan from those studies =.= And recommend neutering for rats.. rodents are where lot of the studies on these issues on =.= VCA websites actually says such studies don't exist =.=;;;. so tldr: most of the cats/dogs us in more well off areas interact have somewhat altered behaviour
