Do PHEVs work for long journeys ? - 2021 Kia Sorento 4 PHEV

I filmed this one a couple of months ago. How much stuff can you get in the Kia Sorento and can that include a bike ? I then needed to drive to Cornwall with both pups. A great way to find out how good the Kia Sorento 4 P|HEV is on a long journey but I also wanted to see how the fuel economy suffers when you aren't able to charge over night and have to complete a long journey.

Great review. Best use of PHEV EV range on long trips is to use EV on the urban/back roads and "HEV only" on main roads. Save the battery for the first & last few miles. Trip reset on re-fuelling is an optional user setting that can be changed in the config menu.

I have a KIA Optima SW hybrid which has an electric range of 35 miles. I top it up every night to fully make use of the electric range. I recentlt went to York fully loaded and averaged 59 mpg-petrol only! The combined range at the moment is over 100mpg as most of my driving is in electric mode. I am really like it as it has all the creature comforts I need.

Totally agree about Hybrids, it’s how you use them. I’ve been using them for 7 years and they work for me massively. If I was a rep doing high miles, buy a diesel. One little tip, if your journey is a mixture of motorways and cities, use the electric in the cities and the petrol engine on the motorways. That way the petrol engine is not working hard stop starting in the city, but on the motorway it’s at a constant speed and not revving hard. That way your getting better fuel economy, took me 4 years to work that one out !

I love taking my Prius Prime on long trips. I may not get the phenomenal mileage that I do on short trips, but the mileage is still very, very good. Some people say that PHEV's are no good for people who take long journeys, but they are way better than gas only vehicles. They may not be better than HEV's for long trips, but when I was buying here in Canada the rebates on the PHEV Prius Prime brought it down to a similar cost as an HEV Prius. That made it a no-brainer to go for the PHEV over the HEV.

Journey profile and charging daily is the key for PHEVs. If your daily commute is within the electric range, and you commit to charging daily, it's perfect. You get the benefits of an electric vehicle without the expense of the full size battery. Can't be bothered charging or regularly doing long journeys, then you're much better off with a regular combustion vehicle. I bought a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV at the point where my Range Rover was costing £125 to fill up, and I've never looked back. It's like driving for free in comparison.

Thanks for this upload, the first video I have seen of a real life long distance test in a Phev. I previously owned a C-HR hybrid and frankly on the motorway the MPG was shocking so pleased some PHEV’s perform significantly better as my next car might be a plug in hybrid

Potential PHEV owners need to be made to watch this vlog. My story started almost 6 years ago in a Mitsubishi PHEV that I had for 3 years and 30,000 miles. I got an incredible 105 MPG (75 MPG after the price of electricity) but I charged it every day and during the day. However if you don't do this you will obviously get less MPG than a none PHEV version (maybe 30 MPG) In fact Mitsubishi told me that if you do 100 or more miles a day then buy the diesel version.

@@PetrolPed there's something more interesting.. The battery degradation is awful from 32 miles to 22 miles. There is a good reason why this happens.. Every time you charge to the real 100% I know this because there is no break regeneration until you have done a few miles. This of course will destroy the batteries. Other EVs don't give you access to 100% so when it says 100% it's not, proof because regeneration still works fine. And the batteries don't get hammered.

I fully agree....I have an MG HS PHEV, very economical around town, where the electric drive shines, but doing a 400km trip from Perth to Albany in Western Australia, once the EV battery is drained, and it's a highway with no variation in the 110kmh speed, it's just a 1.5 litre petrol car. Summary: great in city and suburbs but if used for mainly highway use, no real benefit, just buy the petrol only version as a lot cheaper. Also I'd add that driving on EV mode on a highway you will not achieve the 63 km claimed range ....it's more like 45 as no regenerative braking and wind resistance has a squared relationship to speed (double speed = 4x wind resistance) so motor is more heavily loaded

I recently picked up a Seat Leon PHEV and drove it home 130 miles on motorway. Unfortunately, the EV battery was flat on departure, but it still achieved 55mpg on petrol only. The car coasts whenever possible, regens well and will use the electric motor whenever it can. Once charged I travel on short journeys around town and get 30-40 mile range for an 90p overnight charge. I really can't see any negatives about them. Definitely the way forward.

Skipped the phev myself . Driving a full ev the past 5 years after coming from a Citroen DS4 EcoTec Diesel. The biggest thing that put me off a phev was the high cost of Maintenance as theyre really complicated with an Electric Motor, Petrol Engine , Battery and all the management systems that go with it. I did a lot of research before going full ev. All that extra weight makes them very inefficient compared to a bev. The Growing Charging Network should make people less nervous about range. I would like to see the Price of New EVs coming down though as I think the legacy manufacturers are keeping the prices high so it doesnt interfere with their legacy Car Sales. China is going to flood the market with Full Electric cars and as Sandy Munroe recently said the Big US and European manufacturers have no more than 5 years left otherwise theyll struggle to survive if they dont start switching to Full Electric cars now. Youve already got the MG/ZS ev in Europe and Xpeng are shipping their G3 and this week the Tesla like P7 has arrived in Norway. NEO have already opened Stores in Norway so it could be like the Japanese take over of the Car industry . Was watching Sandy Munroe on RU-vid and he said there are 300 EV Manufacturers in China.

I was all for going full electric for my daily drive, but wife wanted 4wd so we settled on a Countryman PHEV. We always plug in at home and now even take an extension lead on our holidays just in case the holiday cottage might have a suitable plug point we can get to for an overnight charge. Mini PHEV though only has a 3kW internal charger so to be honest public charging is a guilt trip. In the time it would take to charge the 10kWh battery pack of the Mini PHEV on a public charger you could fully charge three Teslas!

Must say, the economy seems poor for a hybrid car. I know it’s a fair size car, but my M340i (which I know is smaller, but is still a decent size car) gets 40+ on a run. I suppose if you just do short trips in the Kia, it will be more economical, but you don’t really buy a car of that size and practically, to just drive around town. Must say, it doesn’t really stack up & make sense for me. Great video as always though.

@siraff4461
@siraff4461 3 года назад
A couple of points - firstly you're comparing something the size of an X5 to a 3 series and secondly there is a trade off for that electric range which is weight. Your 3 might get 40+ on a run but it ain't getting 100+ on sub 20 mile runs. Plug-ins are designed to do the daily runs on mostly or all ev then offset some of the distance on long trips. If you just want long trip mpg you're going to be much better off with a diesel.

Another well structured review Peter and what looks and feels like a cracking motor. I think the only things preventing the Sorento, other KIA models, the brand and other brands from this part of the world becoming mainstream in the UK are brand snobery and perceived status. If people look past the two aforementioned things and look at 'value' this becomes a 'no brainer' and will become even more so as EV's move into mainstream.

I own a Kia XCeed, top of the range, this is my 3rd consecutive Kia, all from bran new, Excellent motors, cheap to run, Kia service is wonderful, much cheaper than Toyota for instance, cars very well equipped, even the basic of each model, other makes would be optional, the cars look stunning, as I keep saying: "I don't by badges, I use my money wisely, it will never be a choice, either a bran new car? or a holiday? NO!!! I will have both. Reliability? in 3 different Kias, never broke down, no faults, no worries and that's that.

I have a remaining concern about when PHEv's are used for shortish journeys just beyond the pure battery range. I think there could be problems if the ICE engine does not regularly reach full operating oil temperature which can typically take 5 to 7 miles of ICE continuous use. I admit this risk can be controlled by the selection of a pure ICE mode for such journeys. However, I wonder how many plug-in EV owners are that sophisticated and hence will never buy a plug-in EV second hand due to worry about excessive engine wear for mileage.
@siraff4461
@siraff4461 3 года назад
Don't worry too much. There are plenty of engineers who are paid to make sure that doesn't happen. If the car needs to run it will unless you turn it off completely and if thats the case you would have been within ev range anyway.

I was told that this Sorento would warm up the gaz engine automatically to make sure it's ready to use when needed. I did a test drive and the gaz engine would start when you're asking for more power. So even if your battery is full charge, the gaz engine could be use for fast accelerations. I would think it would be a big issue in cold weather if your engine starts suddenly in cold conditions! Also, in cold weather, you would probably use the heating which will use the gaz engine. So your worrys are to be forgotten.

A lot would depend on the balance of use, but one of the potential problems with PHEV ones is the relatively short ‘shelf life’ of E10 petrol. In some circumstances, one could end up with a tankful of out of date fuel.

Nice car. Im still umming and airing about hybrid. My only slight concern is for some one who is going to be buying a second hand one, and running for long term eg preséntale over 5yrs +. Is cost of pretentaly replacing the battery, also like ev cars is there an increase of tyre and brake wear due to the extra weight. Personally im leaning towards a 2020 bmw x5 d30 due owners say on journeys it easily gets 47mpg to 49mpg witch for a 3ltr inline 6 that’s amazing and you have some fun as well. But the hybrid version is still a consideration, and other cars like the Kia are also.

Thoroughly enjoyed the video and the doggies are dead cute! Re fuel economy, not terribly impressed with those numbers for a longer journey. Our 5.0 Mustang returns 30 plus on a trip and I know which car I’d rather have. Sounds like EV and PHEV only become worthwhile for shorter trips. How long does it take to charge the Kia on a standard three pin plug? Ps, that first cold one is always the best right?

Going off on a bit of a tangent, I have often wondered if having solar panels on an EV or PHEV would be effective in recharging the batteries, like regenerative braking does just to top up the batteries? I can only assume the cost and or amount of power from a solar panel on say the roof of an EV wouldn't be viable/efficient enough or someone would have done it already🤔
@siraff4461
@siraff4461 3 года назад
The problem is the area of roof available and the likelyhood of the car being under a tree, in a car park or next to a building means the wattage available is very small while the cost and integration aren't cheap in the first place. It has been half done a few times with things like some Nissan Leafs having panels in the spoiler which allegedly power the internal fan on a hot day to keep the cabin cool. Hyundai/Kia have started fitting pretty large ones in some of their vehicles but again its like a trickle charge at best - though they can gain a few miles of electricity per day in ideal conditions so not completely useless but hardly game changing.

I just don't see the point in PHEV's. They don't provide significantly better MPG than a petrol car unless on a short journey in which case why not just use a full BEV. I have both ICE and BEV vehicles and when you compare the pro's and cons of BEV vs ICE a PHEV is not good enough in any key area to tempt me away from either.

That was a while ago! The Kia is interesting…is it better than the opposition?…hard to tell. My 240SD4 Discovery Sport will return 41mpg+ on a journey like that and not a battery power in it…but what would a new MHEV version do?? The list price is attractive on the KIA..it is the brand name that is the imponderable question. First of all, K.I.A. not KIO. I drove my Prius+ down to Cornwall for a family of 5 holiday and achieved about 50mpg driving normally and without the need for charging on a charger. In my view PHEV does not achieve much more than a "self charging" hybrid. My EV KIA Soul average 4miles/kWh in the summer and about 2m/kWh in cold winter, which in the real world has big range variation implications between seasons I.e 50%!

Great job! Thanks a lot for sharing the real world experience on the PHEV. I don't know what exact magic they put in these cars. Is it the seats, the suspension tune and the driver assist tech? I have a prev gen Santa Fe, which is not too far from Kia products judging by my experience. After completing a 2-day journey over 1,000 miles in total, I was still not tired and I was really willing to keep going. My bottom and back were still feeling well and I was not drowsy at all. When approaching the destination the destination I've got a good song on the radio and I was making laps around the neighbourhood enjoying the ride after these 2 full days of driving. Really, really impressive what Hyundai and Kia do nowadays :-) Just for the reference - the 2.4GDI Santa Fe 2020 delivered around 32 mpg of highway + some traffic jams driving 3 adults and luggage

@peteb9783 3 года назад
My 2019 latest version RAV4 Hybrid (not plug-in) has averaged 47 mpg (calculated from all fill-ups) in just under 18,000 miles. My best tank full figure is 54½ mpg [BASED ON UK GALLONS! 47 UK mpg is just over 39 miles per US gallon] The lockdowns have meant far more short journeys and a few ½-hour stationary sits on the drive with the system on to keep the 12V battery topped up. Had my usage been more normal I think it would have been close to 50 mpg. According to the official figures the 2 wheel drive version would get a couple more miles per gallon (mine's AWD).

great video, now I happen to be looking at a new car but live 120 miles from work, somerset up to oxford, so m5/m4 etc (approx 90miles worth), where i then commute about 35-40miles over 4-5 days, so would the smart mode be a better option for those longer stints of driving to gain more hybrid assistance, rather than use EV and up 25% in the 1st 15 miles as you mentioned. i would obviously be getting a charger at home if i got a PHEV option (currently looking at a hyundai tuscon/kia sportage) for my days off, plus i have access to an electric charger when near work, so i can use EV mode once i arrive, for the daily commute and charge fully before returning. so 2 questions, was that £50 petrol top up which you said about 400+ mile range sufficient for the return journey and what are the average costs of charging please? reason i ask is to gauge the cost per trip for myself, as currently i'm doing this journey in a 1.6 diesel, great on the motorway part but doesnt like the short commutes part. I hear a lot of people say go for the HEV option but through work the HEV is approx £100 per month more than the PHEV option, now in my head that would almost pay for the fuel side each month.
