I enjoy your integrity and willingness to simply call it as you see it. Seems to me pipe guards help for routine hits, but for a huge hit they can transfer the energy to the cylinder, potentially damaging the flange, which is a far bigger problem than a deeply dented pipe. I think running a pipe guard is alright (I run one) but it is a very good idea to run a flange guard in tandem with the pipe guard. Pipe guard or not, 2T pipes are kind of a consumable/fixable item, it is simply the nature of the big fat hanging out there beast for bikes that get ridden in tough terrain like your "Daisy" here. Those aren't scars on Daisy, they are simply records documenting awesome rides 😄

I truly never run pipe guards only because they trap dirt and they transfer the hit to other areas like you were saying. I'll most likely not do with a pipe guard just for those two reasons. Thank you for the video Morgan always good to get good information from you 🤘

I've run them for years on multiple motorcycles. They work more for sliding or scuffs. Or rubbing up against things but actual crashes. No ive dented some pipes pretty well with them.

Pipe guards quiet the bike down, that's what I like about them... If you remove them during washes you don't need to worry about dirt getting trapped and it only takes a few minutes.

I agree with you. I ride in southern woods (few rocks ) I use to have a carbon guard and when finally needed it it bent the whole head of the pipe. I took off and figured if the pipe bent that bad just buy a new one for only like $60 more than a guard. Edit. Also new shiny ✨ FMF pikes look great naked. Chicks dig it 😂👍🏻

My carbon fiber pipe has some serious scrapes and wear… but the FMF power bomb underneath is in great shape, very slight dent which I was able to repair by filling the pipe with water using freeze plugs and then using a torch to get the water to begin to expand and voila… good as new

I run them on all three of my 2-strokes. Have for years. The bikes get ridden a lot, bash a lot of rocks, and get dropped in gnarly sections. The guards take a beating. I’ve learned how to repair them with carbon fiber and epoxy. As for the pipes, they do get bent and require straightening. I do that with a hydraulic pressure rig (works very well). However, the pipes don’t get badly dented unless you take a motion stopping hit to an immovable object to the pipe. For me, I won’t run without the carbon guards. They save me money and time over the long run. I haven’t bought new pipes in over 10 years.

Great review, The problem without is when the pipe gets a hit on the bottom and ushes the pipe up into the bottom of the LH radiator and caves it in. Now I run a full alloy PT guard (which I hate) to protect the pipe and radiator 🙂

This is my first 2 stroke bike, a 2021 KTM 300 XC, I debated about an pipe guard. I remember a guy early this year, he was very proud of his cool looking (and it was!) GasGas and the great deal he got. His first ride out up a rocky hill climb, he was back in 30 minutes with the pipe bashed in, bummer. A friend of mine always ran a pipe guard for years, so I got one. I'm having a bit of buyers remorse after reading all of the issues with the 300s (thought they were the supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread or better) where it has to get to operating temp before riding(I've never heard of this in a two stroke before, especially snowmobiles fire them up and go), electrical issues..... generally concerned, we'll see this summer once the deep freeze starts to thaw and sun comes out! :) I've had it out snow biking a couple of times, now wondering, should I even do that.

Morgan, I have run them before but not a pipe guard fan at this time, a few caveats are added weight, dirt collector and made one of my pipes rust some at weld joints (rubbing on guard) and this may not be an issue but common sense would say that with the guard on the pipe it cannot dissipate heat as well and holds it next to the engine, IMO not a good thing.

I just took the guard off of my buddies bike I bought that’s had a guard on it since new and there were tons of dings all over it. Metal guard on metal pipe just doesn’t really work other than perhaps making the dent worse and I’m finding that I kind of like the looks of a dented pipe. So cheap to replace anyway and less risk. Taking my guard off.
@jpesicka999
@jpesicka999 Год назад
Depending on the bike it can actually ruin the pipe more than denting it. My 01 CR125 had one and during a crash it broke the exhaust manifold and bent the pipe to a point where I had to buy a new FMF Fatty. Denting the pipe would be easy to repair for $80 or so, pipe cost me like $230. The exhaust manifold was $30. Never running one again. Something's gotta give, might aswell dent the pipe if it comes down to it.
@jaywalk6628
@jaywalk6628 Год назад
They work, I covered up a dented pipe with one. Pipe can still bend though so straightening is still an issue.
@okcmoparguy724
@okcmoparguy724 Год назад
On my 125xc with a guard it saved a pipe dent but the energy still transferred and cocked the exhaust flange. Surprisingly it doesn't leak but it could have cracked the jug. I don't think they're worth it due to the damage they'll transfer to more critical areas.

I'm just not going to spend more money on a carbon fiber guard than I did on the pipe. Those things are so expensive you need a pipe guard guard. Personally I prefer the "accordian" style guards from Flatland Racing. Has held up great and you can bend the "wings" in a bit when mounting so it has some give and absorbs impact vs. moving the damage to the neck of the pipe or flange.

I have been off 2 strokes since 2015, but when I was a 2 smoker.... I would go through pipes constantly! I tried a few pipe protectors like that one and my issue was that it would usually crease right where the end of the guard was. Almost act like a stress riser. But, I ride 4 strokes now, so that problem is gone :)
@highlandcycles
@highlandcycles Год назад

@chasejiannalone8763
@chasejiannalone8763 Год назад
No pipe guards ever, they are relatively costly. They transfer force to the mounting as well. You are better off taking and dissipating the hits in the metal. Spend the money on a pipe repair kit and propane torch . You can usually repair the dents to 90-99% as good as new with compressed air and heat.
