In this QUAH Sal, Adam, & Justin answer the question "They say if you are tall you are at a natural disadvantage for squats. Can you discuss different methods to progress and increase range of motion? Will I hit a point where I can’t advance any further doing high bar back squats?".
If you would like to get your own question answered, follow us on Instagram where we post QUAH requests weekly.

It is a gift. I am 6’6. 50. I hated it when I was younger. But I am strong and still look leaner than other people my own age. My deadlift is only 160 kg. I can press 57.5 dumbbells with huge leavers. My arms got cut and strong but my deadlift has always been a struggle. I also have strong legs. I don’t care if other people are deadlifting 220 kg or more. Being tall is the long game. Time is your friend and you will always look better for being tall I think. Keep going man. Really good stuff! However with a decent knowledge of statics and levers on my side I disagree with the idea "that deadlifts are easier" the increased leverage induced by a long femur is very much there. In addition tall lifters will typically lift the weight much higher off the ground, leading to a much greater energy expenditure per rep. There really isn't any static lifting, pulling or pushing exercise that benefits from longer leverage, as the lever is always working against you. Great point with tall lifters having more muscle, definitely explains how giants like Thor pull such weight.
@JayBrown-xs9ps

I'm a shorter guy (5'6 or '7) and I respect this video because they admit that taller guys are at a kind of anatomical disadvantage because of their natural lever lengths (making the range of motion automatically longer) in most exercises and generally need greater mobility but they also acknowledge that shorter people have lower ceilings for mass and strength gain and also have an overall naturally smaller muscle size (and tendon as well, which would both cause less strength). So it balances and shouldn't be used as an excuse or a way to put down shorter people's gains (these are experiences that I've come across).

Having long limbs most certainly is not an advantage in any sort of pull or push. A movement like bent over row is essentially just like a bench press but the other way around. The same levers and disadvantages are at play. Yea we have longer arms but we also have longer legs so we don't have a shorter ROM. So if the ROM is not smaller what makes long limbs an advantage in deadlift. It isn't the long legs, they just make everyting harder. Believe me. I've tried.
@harambae7014
@harambae7014 Год назад
I imagine being short but having disproportionately long arms would be ideal for deadlifts because ROM would be lower. Probably sucks for most upper body lifts though.

Actually in deadlift its not true. Your back lenght makes it harder for you and you usually use legs for deadlifts so arm length does not make a different that much. Contrary shorter people have easier because their knees wont get in the way. But taller people have bigger muscles and often get alot stronger.
@harambae7014
@harambae7014 Год назад
Yeah I think being taller doesn't help but if someone has long arms compared to their height it's probably easier purely due to the reduced bar path distance.
@Aryan-d6i
@Aryan-d6i 7 месяцев назад
I totally agree. I was avoiding deadlifts for a while because of the amount of lower back pain until I started to use the high handle trap bar. The first 2 sets of lower weight 225-315lbs I would use upside down for the longer range of motion. Then high handles for the other 2 sets 405-455lbs. My back no longer takes a beating. For Squats I do a front squat but can't go high weight because it's much harder than back squats.
@austinporter9232
@austinporter9232 2 года назад
Taller people only have a disadvantage in weightlifting in weight-classed sports. It’s the reason why you’ll never see record breaking 6’6 Olympic lifters or power lifters, but it’s also the same reason that most strongman are 6’4 and we’ll over. A larger frame means more ability to pack on muscle but also means lb for lbs you’re probably not gonna be as strong. It’s all biomenchanics. Motor strength in comparison to your lever. Need a bigger motor to pull a longer lever, hence you’re gonna weigh more.

Always felt the mechanics of being taller impacted my squat. Ankle mobility certainly comes to play but man breaking 90 has always been a challenge whereas pulling deadlift or hitting a heavy bench press I’ve accelerated at. At almost 35, my focus on lower body has become more mobility focused and just getting blood flowing vs trying to smash a record every time.

I'd be interested to know if there is any research around muscle growth rates by height. Because if you're 6ft 5, are you really going to be growing muscle faster than someone who is 5ft 5? Or are you both going to be building muscle at around the same rate, meanwhile the tall guy needs significantly more muscle to fill out their frame, so they are going to need to grow potentially twice as much muscle? If you look at area of a cylinder or similar shape (like a muscle is), as you make that cylinder longer, to get the same proportion the area of it SIGNIFICANTLY goes up. Increasing the length of a cylinder by 1/3rd means the area of that cylinder has to increase by 237% to equal the same ratio of length to radius. So that would suggest (albeit bro maths) that you're going to need to build 237% as much muscle to get the same end result aesthetically.

I'm 6'6" and I have to use a slightly wider stance when doing sqauts. Sit-ups are something I can't do either, though it's not just because I'm tall, it's because of my genetic disorder called Marfans syndrome. Doing Sit-ups or bendind too much can tear my dural sac at the bottom of my spine causing sever spinal pressure headaches. No excuses though, sometimes just flexing my core while driving or walking keeps my core strength up!

as a tall guy, its just super hard to look massive. and at some point you can't build muscle anymore and maybe that happens before you "filled out your frame" guys that are 170cm tall will look well trained very fast. friend of mine had 32cm arms with low bodyfat and they looked great. i got 41cm arms and when i let my arms just hang at my sides, they look skinny. you wouldn't think that i lift. And my numbers don't go up a lot anymore, benching around 240, Squat 300 and deadlift close to 400, i feel like i am close to the maximum of what i can archieve (in my corcumstances. time for gym, recovery etc). its like ... disheartening to fill you your size (i'm 6'5 / 197cm tall) with muscle. and when i wear normal clothes, i don't look like i train at all. to look "big" i probably should just put on 10-15kg of fat to add volume to my body, "bearmode" it's a very subjective problem and a lot of people will say "be happy that you are tall" yeah thats your perspective and i respect that. but all my life, since i started growing a lot with 12/13 years of age, i ALWAYS felt and looked skinny

@spaghettiman426
@spaghettiman426 3 месяца назад
I feel like deadlifts are the only lift a tall guy has a disadvantage in. Cuz it’s at a set height so it’s a deficit starting point for a 6ft tall guy vs a average height guy pulling at a near knee height and even less for a midget. Just a rack pull for him. Like if you make the distance standardized at a set position in their anatomy like mid shin for a set height. And now you have people meeting it or have their unique leverages have to work with a designated deadlift plate that lifts the bar higher for a 6ft tall guy but it’s lower cuz the dude has longer legs cuz of his leverages or it’s set higher on his shins cuz this 6ft tall guy has shorter legs but long torso and arms. So imo deadlift is the only lift with a not relative rom distance. Vs a bench press or a squat where they all start at the top. And it’s really relative.

Someone that is 5’5” compared to someone that is 6’5” and are PROPORTIONALLY the same, the TALLER person has a distinct strength advantage. Because….it’s not the arms and “levers” that are longer, the chest is bigger, the muscles are longer, they cover more area. There is just MORE of everything. If you are tall and can’t lift as much as someone much shorter than you are, you’re proportionality has most likely not reached the same level as the shorter guy. All things being equal (proportionality) there is no reason your height should not give you a real world strength ADVANTAGE.

Long legs prevents you to reach the bar if you don't bend your legs way too much. And still, my butt is to far up. Feels like being a spider monkey, where should all my limbs go?? So, 5'11 is not the magic hight, not for me though.

Pure biomechanics. The amount of momental force in the joints are much larger with the taller lifter. You dont want to increase ROM, but rather decrease it. If tall people add up with more muscles, the muscles are still longer, and the M,f in the joints are still larger, so you can never make up and be equal with a shorter lifter. If we looked at amount of work done (Joule) rather than KGs/lbs lifted, todays record holders are not the lifters who has made the greatest accomplishment - strengthwise.
@danieljohnson3733
@danieljohnson3733 2 года назад
Mixing up simple machines. A longer lever is more advantageous to moving something. The range of motion is longer for a taller person, essentially they have to perform more work to accomplish the same lift. Also being taller puts the weight further from your center of gravity, understand your sentiment but having a longer lever is not the reason it’s harder. Otherwise love the videos

Deadlifting is way harder being tall. 6’6. Moment arm is huge. A small back is advantageous. Very very super short legs will mean you press more than hinge. A long back like I have sucks. Also you move the bar heaps more. Way more. Not less. Relative strength decreases with size increase but real strength increases. I love my long back. It gives me a real male look. Helps with a v taper and hides some fat. It sucks for deadlifting. At least at hinge orientated deadlifts. Trap bar and sumo are easier as more leg press helps. Also if I was on a fuck-tonne of gear then sure I could fill my massive frame to 160+kg. Currently I am natural and 120, down from 130kg. Small people do pull-ups small people and win CrossFit. Small people do body weight stuff well like callisthenics and gymnastics. Tall/big guys win fights just by getting out of their car and kick ass in mma. That is why we there are weight classes. Just the way the world works.
