On Today's Episode:
It’s obvious that what we put into our bodies has a major impact on how we feel, how we perform, and how we live the life we have. While some people choose to live in the moment for pleasure with little regard to consequences, others calculate and carefully consider what they consume, when they do and how they do it.
Optimizing for physical and mental performances, reducing stress and improving lifespan and memory is worth more than a moment of pleasure, and it may be possible to biohack your way there.
Ben Greenfield is a biohacker, fitness coach, endurance athlete, and bestselling author of more than a dozen books, including Boundless. His experiences and level of intention in biohacking his health is so clearly communicated, he will leave you inspired and impressed.

QUOTES:
Before you go after the ‘I want to live forever and have my head cryogenically frozen,’ [...] to instead go after this low hanging fruit, you can get outside barefoot…” [5:53]
“Fast for a couple hours after exercise that also allows the body to have to fight its own battle.” [13:01]
“More than 60 minutes of intense exercise, [...] you see a law of diminishing returns and increased risk of mortality.” [16:14]
“I think everyone is born with a unique skill set. One of the best ways to know what your purpose is, what your passion is, is to think about what you enjoyed to do when you were young.” [24:06]
“There are certain decisions that I think a child should be far more equipped to make young in life so that as they get older they are able to responsibly handle those decisions.” [30:04]
“I am a Christian and I believe that God actually created a lot of these plants to allow him to be able to speak to us in a very deep and meaningful way when the time comes.” [36:12]
“Everyone should be able to clearly and succinctly name their purpose in life.” [48:22]

Whenever I’ve seen an interview of elderly person that is doing well and they’re 80+, it’s usually same pattern. They eat like a bird, maybe a little coffee (or whatever their guilty pleasure is), go for small walks, and most importantly they’re not stressing about life! When someone is stressed-you can see it in their face/body posture, it can cause inflammation, dis-ease, etc. Imo being stress free is the main factor.

Other than breaking his hips, he hasn’t had many other issues. He has an amazing memory and reads the paper everyday. I can’t tell you why he has endured other than working hard, retiring early, and eating less. He does no exercise in his old age. I think the pacemaker may have a lot to do with it. A slow heartbeat will put you down unless you have one. He did a lot of walking, before his falls. I think that has been a contributing factor as well.

My two cents worth..... people in the blue zones seem to have a very strong sense of community, there is no stress on supporting the ME and immediate family, the whole village is considered to be family . Your roof is leaking someone will come and help fix it. You are hungry someone will provide you with a meal. Imagine no stress of food, shelter and money as long as you were prepared to do a hard days work. They enjoy life by engaging in physical exercies with a little compition all done outside and then they come together and share food.

How stoked am I? How ‘encouraged’ am I? One important thing to know and add to this conversation about grounding that is NOT being shared is this. Grounding in the city is NOT grounding in the wild! The city is full of a lot of underground power lines running dirty electricity through the ground. Being barefoot and connected to that isn't healthy.. sure, there's some electrons from the earth still, however.. half electrons and half dirty electricity is not ideal. Really enjoyed this chat!

Dr. Kenneth Cooper, the father of aerobics, who wrote the book “Aerobics” in the late 1960s, once believed the more an individual ran, the better for the heart. But then he found out individuals running lot of miles were not that much more heart healthy and may be stressing out the body. About 35 years ago, Dr. Cooper recommended that for the average individual the optimum distance for heart health is to run no more than 20 miles per week.
@AnTalk_blog
@AnTalk_blog Год назад
I think intensity also plays a role in that equation. If you keep your runs at Zone2 you can average longer distances.
@michaeljozwiak25
@michaeljozwiak25 Год назад
@@AnTalk_blog About thirty years ago from my memory, Dr. Cooper was not against runners or joggers going further than 20 miles per week. What he was saying is if your sole goal is to run for heart health, then the maximum distance is 20 miles per week or less. Any more distance, the runner is not adding any more heat health benefits and is actually stressing the heart more than necessary. This is dated advice and a casual search could not find his original recommendation or a more current recommendation. If one wants to run longer to train for a marathon or ultra-marathon, because someone likes running longer, one wants to lose more weight, etc. than one can do it. If your experience is better for you than his recommendation, then go for the longer distance to enhance your heart health, if that is your primary goal.

Lots of nuggets of wisdom here, but he seems ignorant about 2 things in particular: 1. Giving marijuana to kids is irresponsible, given its links to schizophrenia in adolescents. 2. Girls getting their period by NO means makes them women. 12-year-old girls (the average for girls getting their period) are very much NOT women. A period is the FIRST, but by no means final step to being able to reproduce. Girls' periods aren't even regular for the first couple of years either. The female body has to go through further development before it's equipped for pregnancy - a teenager may be able to get pregnant, but their hips and pelvis are typically not wide enough to carry a foetus to term, and female fertility doesn't peak until 25.

In finland saunas (and "hot tubs") are used a lot in the context of alcohol and a cold beer is almost mandatory (at least among men). I don't think the majority of finnish people use saunas for their health, they do it because it feels great, especially when the weather tend to be rough and cold most of the time - and to get warm after swimming in the lakes in the summer, because the water is so cold.

I agree a great deal with what the gentleman had to say. But I totally disagree with his taking a bow to kill a grizzly bear to prove some type of challenge. Grizzly bears are a threatened species in the United States and are endangered in Canada. Why would you have to kill an animal like that to prove you’re a tough guy, or to prove anything.

Something felt off about this guy and I realized what it was when he started talking about "plant medicine". I don't have anything against people using drugs recreationally as long as they aren't hurting themselves or others. However I'm tired of the unearned wisdom and pseudo-spirituality that can come out of these experiences for some people. A guy that took DMT a couple times isn't the same as a nepalese monk that dedicted his entire life to spiritual discipline since he was a child. There is a reason why every serious spiritual discipline tells you to avoid intoxicants. Drugs don't make you wiser as much as they can make you believe you are wiser. So many people have lost their minds on these things, fall into a deeper sleep while deluding themselves that they are waking up, or even became consumed with narcissism or solipsism (the movie Beyond the Black Rainbow was partially inspired by this phenomenon). While they should be legal, people need to be aware of the risks. In my opinion drugs can be fun, interesting, or even healing (in a controlled clinical setting), but they don't lead to anything profound.
@Ella-kn9qd
@Ella-kn9qd Год назад
What do you think of Ayahuasca? It's not much of a party drug, since vomiting and diarrhea is part of the process typically, it's not a "fun" drug, you still think this way about Ayahuasca? Have never seen serious disciples advising against Ayahuasca, but usually recommending it, which usually when people say plant medicine, I think that's the big one they're talking about.
@offensivearch
@offensivearch Год назад
@@Ella-kn9qd My reservations about these drugs isn't that they are fun for some people. I'm not really opposed to people having fun with drugs as long as it isn't ruining lives. I didn't know that about the "plant medicine" term. I thought it was broader than that, including things like shrooms, cannabis, and peyote too. Ayahuasca is actually the most insidious version of what I am talking about. DMT is known to cause the most intense and real-feeling hallucinations of common drugs. I am against this sentiment that having feel-good hallucinations is spiritual. It is a sensationalist pseudospirituality, it makes you feel like you are waking up or progressing when you are actually falling deeper asleep. At some point these drug users become unhinged to the point that even normies can see it. People progressing on a spiritual path look more sane, not less. I'm not against certain hallucinogenic drugs for addiction, emotional issues, ptsd, etc. I'm talking about a very specific issue here. The spiritual path requires disciplined practice, there is no shortcut. I've read a lot of people and no one with any abiding realization attributed it to drugs. Contemplative insight, meditation, writing, or some other disciplined practice was almost always involved. The most developed serious spiritual traditions all eschew drugs for a reason. Nothing against drug-using shamanic traditions, but IMO they are underdeveloped at best. There used to be some drug talking traditions / experimentalists in the east, but they have been replaced by monastic traditions like advaita, buddhism, zen, etc all of which eschew drug use. Eventually every tradition that is honest and sincere recognizes the futility of spirituality through drug use.

Life expectancy is the average age at death. So when life expectancy doesn't rise, that doesn't mean people aren't living longer. It means on average, people aren't living longer. People who are practicing life extension techniques may be living much longer. I don't know how to get that statistic.

So much of what he says...and declares as not being necessary for anti-aging... and THEN goes on to say he's doing ALL this (the stemcell & other biohacking stuff he's had done). DItto with the idea (he initially stated in the beginning) that he's come to realize it isn't necessary to go out and prove your manhood in events like Iron Man, etc. , is completely unnecessary... And THEN, the big 'Ultra Manhood' reveal! - his upcoming grisly bow-hunt challenge in the Alaskan wilderness - where he will bring no food or supplies, but survive on his own. Umm...that's not akin to an IronMan challenge?

Did anyone include ‘Finnish women’ in the ‘sauna study’; just asking.
@matildawendelin5210
@matildawendelin5210 Год назад
Studies are usually done on men, because they have a 24h "cycle" with an even distribution of hormones and are much easier to study. If they wanted to include women they should take the 28 day cycle into consideration, which becomes way more complicated (hormone levels affect blood sugar levels etc.). Looking at a male study can give you more insight than looking at a female study, because they are hardly ever controlled for where they are in their cycle/ hormone levels.

wondering whether the Finnish men were using steam or red light saunas....
@matildawendelin5210
@matildawendelin5210 Год назад
definitely not. Traditional steam saunas are really rare in Finland, and red light saunas are only found in some kind of new wellness centers. The "normal" Finnish saunas have been used for centuries for sanitary purposes (the poor used to go bathe in the cold lakes/rivers + use a public sauna once a week), and because the weather is cold and rough most of the time - I think it's only in hindsight that we now get the happy surprise that it is a healthy tradition.
@Lulu-kt6gr
@Lulu-kt6gr Год назад
Where are the studies on saunas? Unless you are controlling for all other factors such as the diet of the people in the sauna, the level of stress, social ties etc. etc., there is no way to tell if it is something that that is causing a longer life. I am guessing that the people who do well in the study are people who take care of themselves in general anyway. People who can afford to sit in a sauna every day can also afford every other self-care luxury that is available. I feel drained after a sauna and I could never do a sauna every single day and I would never want to.
