It's important to note that internal shoulder rotation and forearm pronation thru contact cause the swing path to steepen near contact. Focusing just on ISR and pronation results in a very steep swing path that yields a shot with very little pace.

Love the layout of the heavy ball. I don't think height is as much a factor for a heavy ball, but more than often people who hit heavy tend to use more net clearance on the shot. Definitely a discussion point that can go either way to me. Cheers.

I really like your approach and how you use slow motion to drive the point home. Super helpful. One point also becomes quite clear from this SM clips is difference in contact point. For heavy spin, I think contact point needs to be much closer compared to flatter drive where contact point is much forward comparatively. By the way I thought you were a left hander!

Great video as always, Ian! Helps a lot. One open question : which stance do you recommend for (heavy) topspin forehand? Open or closed? Is both possible? I’m a relative beginner and am still using closed stance mainly, and want to know if I can start practicing this with my closed stance.

Excellent Lesson Ian! So descriptive and visual. I think it confuses most beginners when coaches say "brush the ball" at the outset. Only after you have been playing for a while and you get a feel for the racket when hitting the ball, the strokes and other top spin shots like kick serve...then "brushing" and the difference in sounds makes sense. Thanks very much for the content, really helps!

I agree that spin and pace are two necessary ingredients for a heavy ball. I would suggest depth is also vital. A shot with pace and spin that lands closer to the service line is a whole lot easier to return than a ball with spin and pace that hits closer to the baseline.

Could you please share a full course to explain how to deal with heavy topspin, not especially high bouncing balls, but above all for the difficulty in keeping control of the ball we send back because the spinning ball effect makes us lose control and the ball goes into the scenery... It's the same feeling playing table tennis against an opponent who's mastered top spin...

Great video. For the heavy forehand, do recommend hitting off the back foot like Nadal does in the video? Nadal here lifts his front leg, has his weight all on this back foot, and his feet are falling backwards, whereas I've heard from past coaches to lean forward and transfer all my weight to the front foot like you do in the drill too with your back foot raised. Which is correct for the heavy forehand? If both or depends, when should I think about one weight shift + footwork vs. the other? Thanks!

One variable that you missed and will enhance the drive portion of the motion is stepping in to hit the ball. Balls hit without forward weight transfer player will be able to generate more spin and vice versa. As my coach taught weight behind the shot keeps the ball down.

If we take the equation it follows that if two balls one with considerably more spin than the other have the same speed then the ball with more spin feels more heavy because it has more energy. Because it's the same speed but extra energy for spin makes it heavier

Another great explanation, Ian! I really like that kind of comparison of Del Potro's and Nadal's swing direction. What I would like to see, is a video like this for advanced players. I am thinking about the recoil or maybe the 'outswinging' of the strokes. On my own strokes, I observe to stop the movement actively verly early after hitting the ball to speed up being ready for the next shot. After watching some better players or even pros, they mostly do it differently as they are like never stopping their swing but always outswinging and continuing the movement as like one motion to hit the next ball.
@ldeue4837
@ldeue4837 3 года назад
I think where the pro's truly gain their advantage is how well they can hit the ball in the right area. Many people in tennis don't think about the ball, and where you can hit it, they just think about TRYING to hit it. If you can learn little things, such as, taking a cross-court ball on the outside, or taking a high ball on the inside. You can increase the ways in which you can manipulate the ball. It's the same with grip strength, only I would say it's much more difficult to change up your grip strength at the right time, for the right shot.
@ldeue4837
@ldeue4837 3 года назад
Ian...I have been noticing how important shoulder tilt is to play this game at a high level, that in combination with where you actually hit ON the ball(outside, back middle etc.) I've been slowly trying to transfer this to my backhand but it's still foreign. I noticed I use shoulder tilt a lot on my forehand side, but it just happens...I don't actively think about it. I think this is something that is rarely if ever talked about by Tennis professionals.
@grimson

This is great, as always. The lines you drew on the screen really helped visualize the swing path, BUT I kinda wish you didn't start DelPo's so far behind impact, because it kind of misrepresented his swing path. His raqcuet is actually moving parallel to the ground for several feet before impact, and never at any point drops below the height of the ball. Which is kinda crazy! But he's otherwordly talented, and also, at 6'6" he's above the level of the net with almost every swing.
@DustyDingoPhotos
@DustyDingoPhotos 3 года назад
totally agree. The racquet path _to the point just beyond where the ball leaves contact with the racquet_ is horizontal. Following the path of the racquet so far beyond point of contact misrepresents the true racquet path, and in fact weakens the point you are otherwise demonstrating so well . . . with Nadal's there is virtually no difference as his follow-through follows the same line as in the approach to the ball pretty well exactly.

Hey Ian I really enjoy all your videos you have taught me so much in the last few months. All your content is very intelligent keep up the good work. That being said I have been waiting for a video just like this but the one element that was missing that I was looking so forward to hearing about is WHEN to execute heavy balls. I’m completely stumped on this. I watched Nadal destroy my idol Djocovich at Roland Garris this year and almost all of his shots were heavy top spin so I changed my swing completely and now I hit almost all heavy top spin and now I have almost forgotten how and when to drive the ball. If you can do a part ii explaining at what moments in a match should you hit “nadal” balls as opposed to “potro” balls would be amazing..... and what percentage of balls hit in a professional match would you say are “heavy” balls ? Thank u 🙏🏻
@josephhodge7114
@josephhodge7114 3 года назад
use the high heavy ball to push your opponent off the court-these shots are difficult to handle and eventually they will give you a short ball. you can treat this an approach shot or angle it off for a winner (which you’ll want to drive a little more “potro” style). also try to attack your opponent’s backhand with the heavy ball, most people struggle against that shot. hope this helps!

Been watching this channel for about 2 months now and it has helped me win some matches! I'm at about intermediate level, started playing seriously a few months ago. The other day I was playing outside with some friends and it was around 35 degrees outside so the new balls we used bounced like they were totally dead. I'm not sure if there's even enough knowledge out there to do a video or if it just comes down to experience, but would love to see a video or hear some feedback on how to deal with the way balls tend to bounce depending on the weather!
@annem7917
@annem7917 3 года назад
I’ve also been playing outside exclusively during the pandemic. My rule of thumb is that above 50 (degrees Fahrenheit) the balls have a decent bounce, in the 40s, a lower bounce but still playable, but below 40 there are a lot more unplayable bounces, not good for match play and only marginal for practice.

Ian, I think that you need to add a caveat in there to warn the players that they still need to extend toward the target instead of pulling off the shot in order to generate a truly heavy ball. BTW - I've always used the formula that Power (racket head speed) = Spin + Pace. Same concept but the definition won't give a physicist heartburn.

I always felt a heavy shot was one that felt heavy on my racket literally. To me it’s always been somewhat of a balance of power and spin. Normally when I play someone much better all their shots feel heavy because the spin and power is just on a different level. That being said Maybe I’m just not at a level to be able to tell the difference! Great content though!

What if you have just the opposite problem? For whatever reason I have a heavy top spin ball all the time, but I have difficulty hitting it flat. I think maybe I must have patterned my swing off of Borg, not sure... There's a teaching pro that I occasionally hit with and he also says once in awhile that I have a heavy ball. And I've noticed when I missed the ball that my swing path is like Nadal's. I like the path of the heavy ball. It's very aesthetically pleasing, and it can put people on defense when I'm hitting it well. But sometimes I need to put the ball away and I can't really do it. So how can I learn to hit flat when necessary?

Teaching pro I hit with defines it as a Drive ball (with spin or flat foot over the net) and a heavy ball with height 4ft or more. Heavy ball needs to be aimed a foot before the baseline. A great rally drill is to have your pro call out what you're going to hit. Drive ball. Heavy ball.

Great video! Will you do a video about Nadal's buggy whip? Coaches always say not to do it as a standard forehand stroke, but nobody ever goes into why players shouldn't. In other words, why is it good for him, but not something you recommend to all players?
@dustyroot4708
@dustyroot4708 3 года назад
I want to point out a well known observation: Nadal doesn't buggy whip a lot in his practice rallys. (I think the clip was taken from a practice match, which is different.) The cause of the buggy whip comes from hitting the ball a little late and trying to lift it over the net. You'll notice a lot of pros use the buggy whip when they're stretched out or rushed on their forehand side. To do this successfully, you have to hit around the outside of the ball with a lot of racquet head speed. This is not taught or encouraged because it goes against the fundamentals of tennis: prepare early, step into the ball, and follow through. Nadal is fascinating to watch because it almost appears that he's nervous in his matches and he hits the ball late (almost behind him), but it allows for his racquet to come around the outside of the ball. People have pointed out that a lot of times he's not even hitting the sweet spot of the strings on these types of shots. (Almost falling backwards too) Don't copy Nadal for his forehand form (He's a one of a kind), copy him for his incredible intensity and focus on every point.
@bmpjjaa
@bmpjjaa 3 года назад
It's a bit too simplistic to say a heavy ball is a combination and a trade off between spin and drive. It's possible to have both. Federer hits with a lot of drive and spin. I've played with an ATP top 250 pro before. He was feeding me the ball and it traveled very slow through air (no pace). After the ball hit the ground, it kicked up and accelerated like crazy. That was a no pace, heavy ball. On the other hand, I hit a high top spin ball which slowly spins up to 170cm. Just imagine a moon baller's ball, the spin is good but that's not heavy. In my experience, a heavy ball is a ball that accelerates in pace after it hits the ground. By the time the ball bounces, you must be in the right spot to receive the ball and finished your preparation. It gives you a ton of pressure since your footwork must be on point. Hitting a heavy ball is more than just swinging low to high. It is also having the 1) strong body rotation, 2) body weight transfer into the ball, and 3) hitting the ball at the bottom of the racquet (tennisspeedresearch.blogspot.com/2011/05/roadmap-to-hall-of-fame-forehand-part-1.html).
@SJ-di5zu
@SJ-di5zu 3 года назад
Well yeah there is a way to get a lot of drive and spin. You just hit really hard. Watch Thiem or Nadal hit. They just use so much racket head speed that they can get both spin and pace at the same time.
@bmpjjaa
@bmpjjaa 3 года назад
@@SJ-di5zu What i am saying is that It doesn't have to come as a trade off between drive and spin. Likewise, you can hit a lot of spin but it's not a heavy ball or you can have a heavy ball without pace. Look at federer's heavy ball: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QeubK9HwzW8.html

I think there is also an intangible aspect to the "heavy ball" that is more than just spin and pace. It is the feeling that the ball is sizzling through the air such that it almost hurts ur hand to block it. For instance, the shots (serves and forehand) that Pete Sampras hit were definitely "heavy" but they objectively may have less spin and pace than a Jack Sock forehand, which I think would feel less "heavy"

From my experience coaching High School Tennis lots of young players try to hit like Nadal but end up being very inconsistent. When hit correctly this is a stroke that the excessive spin helps to go in and is challenging to hit back. However when the player has poor technique when they try to duplicate the “ Nadal” it can be very challenging to correct. I call it “ The all show and no go” forehand. They frequently frame the ball, flip the racquet head over in the air like they just don’t care. I usually use del Potro as my how to example on the forehand. I do like your lesson progression. It can be less complicated to teach a player from the ground up rather than rebuild poor technique that is already in their muscle memory.

when I try to hit winners with a heavy ball it's always messy for me, I either have too much angle in the racquet and ends in the net or not enough spin and it goes at the end of the court; how can you "lock" that racquet angle??

I don’t agree with the definition of “heavy ball” here. I view a heavy shot as using the kinetic chain of the player to hit a powerful ground stroke as opposed to pure racket head speed which may or may not be heavy. Thus, a player could hit a heavy topspin drive (eg Nadal) or a heavy flat shot (e.g., Connors) or even a heavy slice (think Rosewall). I think the determining factor is whether a player fully uses his or her hips, shoulders and legs to hit groundies and serves. That is what creates a heavy ball.

Not so sure about this low to high swing path business to get a heavy topspin shot. I think it may have more to do with ISR/pronation over the contact window since that will make the racquet path suddenly rise if hit out in front of you. Take a look at the hihh level player in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OugsiTMK4rc.html Look for example at the FHs at 3:37, 3:53, 4:09, 4:33, 6:27. Almost flat swing paths approaching the ball, yet he still gets heavy looping ball over the net.

When you understand this concept, you understand just how much of a freak of nature Nadal is. I’ve seen this guy hit 100 mph forehands off his back foot without flattening his shot out at all. Just hitting a spin shot at 100 mph. And when he does decide to flatten his forehand out? Oh man.

better hit hard shots, 1. Create lag, sooner you learn it better. 2. Have understanding that power doesnt come from your hand but from full body motion. 3. Know that faster you hit contact point changes too, you need hit different spot with strings. 4. Right grip, change as much as needed, practice grips till it becomes natural, but grip is one of biggest tricks for hitting hard. 5.You have to be precise with connecting strings and ball, if you gonna misshit in my opinion better dont hit it at all sometimes. 6. You need extra muscles, lowest aspect but still if you not a bit muscled up its gonna be pretty much impossible. 7. Once again precision i wanna say does matter, for example you can hit perfect precision but shot so powerfull, string maybe little off, and you miss your shot, you must realise that its not your fault, so imagine what if you dont even have that precision as hard hitter, these tips are not for you then. 8. Maybe try using every finger differently when choosing gripsso you know this finger might give you some spin, this finger might give you some power. you can even test it just while holding racquet what happens to a racquet if you use your finger and only that finger what it does for that swing.

Essential Tennis: Diamond Content every single time, every single video. If players took only a small portion of their interest in tennis and dedicated it to watching these videos, instead of playing out there, performing the same motions over and over, they would transform their game. I would argue that even though strategy is important, learning to hit the ball properly and as you wish it to be placed on the opponent's side, is arguably more important for players at least up the 4.0 level.
