Laird is a living legend, and this interview shows crucial and insightful ocean knowledge that us mere mortals are normally not exposed to. Laird was my hero growing up surfing, and his theories and outlook are still relevant today. He is an authority on ocean based behavior patterns, as he has reached the height of the sport. A well composed interview - thanks for sharing!
53:00 - 55:30- these two minutes alone hit the bull's eye. Amazing (no BS) person. Very little of persona on top of the real one. Of course he is a businessman and he sales his brand; his name, and his products, but his words are truly genuine and worth reflecting on the self. Breathing technique 13:00 Thank you!
I found Wim Hof though you. Then I found Laird Hamilton though Wim Hof (What Doesn't Kill Us). Then I found you interviewing Laid. An awesome man, and a great interview. Thanks for bringing light to life.
+Lewis Howes I have always admired Hamilton just for his incredible surfing skills. But my admiration pales in comparison with the story I heard about how he saved his friend's life in 100' storm surf off of Maui. The conditions were so scary and dangerous, the situation so bad, that not only did it take a Superman to do it, but a super HUMAN. There's a saying that I always think of in situations like this. You've heard it before, but in Laird's case, it goes double: "There is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friends." Now that's what I call a "hero."
Groovy video! Thanks for the key reminder Laird of each needing to be true to their own selves, and the crucial first word of your greatness definition. Compassion! Compassion for self or others does allow love to be an action word too! Thanks Lewis for this! Keep well both!
I'm a big fan of Laird and just happen to do my first Wim Hoff breathing experience today. The first thing I thought was that it must be close to the feeling of both feeling of being born and equally similar to that of dying. Hearing Laird describe it the same way within the first minute of talking about it makes me think it might just be.
another fantastic and insightful interview ! Thank you Lewis for opening up the world of success through your thoughtful interviews and varied guests. For anyone who has just come across these great interviews , go and check out Lewis Howes background and success and you will be equally inspired by his amazing story . Thank you for inspiring .
I was in my construccion job in Hanalei in Kauii and in one momentt my partner atack me with a rock and begun a loudly fight ;cassualitty or not Laird and his wife were there in their house . She called the police and he quickly came to separate; otherwise i dont know what could happened. I went to the police station pay a u$d 1000 and thats it. Aloha.
I understand what Laird is saying about doing a meditation more in the body than what he calls ethereal. When he describes having Tibetan level connections - for me, this is the 'ethereal' part. Ethereal does not refer to the mechanism but the state. Connection to consciousness can be achieved by both mindful body... and mindful soul. I will try this!
Did Laird Hamilton say that he is a born-again Christian since he asked the "Lord" to save him when he was out in the ocean??? Or is his Lord somebody else? Hopefully, not Satan...
Thoroughly enjoyed this! A quick takeaway: Love what you're doing ('ing' for the present continuous as in being in the moment, the zone), love yourself (be true to who you are), and love others.
Aways found this guy fascinating. And I love how he learns so much from life. Wish I could do that. A very humble, rounded and want-to-do-well kinda guy. An inspiration, even if you were to discount all his amazing achievements.
If someone else that wasn’t a proven high level athlete, was saying this, we might be calling him a nut. But this dude is so high level and such an intense athlete, he demands that we at least listen. He’s actually modified his system since this video.
Dylan Jagiello ~ I don’t k ow all the variations but he was in an interview last year with Joe Rogan. What he discussed there has greater detail than what he discusses on this video which is 4 years old. Check it out. They go over more than just breathing but it’s pretty intense.
I am Laird’s age and grew up poor and white. I had a lot of bullying happen to me as well. I can say for certain all the adversity just made me stronger and a better person for it. I feel sorry for the current generation that for many, will not ever mature to manhood. The protection and participation trophies will sell them short. One needs some oppression to grow their character and fortitude.
In greek language the spirit is "pneuma" and human lungs is "pneumonas or pneumonia" and breathing is "pnoe from pneuma". I always wondered, is it a coincidence those words are so similar??? Thank you Laird Hamilton thanks to you now i know!
Pnoe - Divine spirit/Breath of the Divine, a higher form of breath/spirit not a linguistic twist. The Bible changed it from Wind to Spirit with the King James Ed. You're right it's not a coincidence though since the Greek believed breath was the spirit, depending on Stoic & Aristotlic view. The hindus "Prana" from the 5 kinds of Pranayama(breathwork essentially) will teach you more accurately though. Both Greek and ancient Egypt got their mythology and spirituality from an earlier source I'm not gonna bother with now etc.. Hold up you could just wiki this.. I'll even "Google" to the subdir for you:) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pneuma I'd still recommend looking into Prãna though.
Yeah, I saw a documentary with David Blane. When he was prepping for his breath hold, he stated he lost the most weight when all he was doing was holding his breath. He got in the best condition, not when working out with the SEALS, but when laying there holding his breath.
guys hyperventilations is not short breathing, 75% of the population has it, without knowing it or hear it. Secondly oxygen is released via carbon dioxide (please read the Bohrt effect, it proves that the more atrial carbon more oxygen is release, ask your doctor), and if we are interesting for health, when the levels of carbon dioxide in the alveoli, are as they should, you can breathe from the nose 24/7 , in any case even sports, however definitely when you talk and eat. Now observe how Laird is breathing, while talking. By all means I don't want to offend anyone nor to play the smart ass role. Put health first, performance second...be well. You dont get oxygen via inhaling form the mouth, is exactly the other way around that is why you feel that you we lose your senses! Your level of oxygen are going down
I really enjoyed the manner of your interview, relaxed - I enjoyed how you were able to open Laird up to sharing so many personal truths which made him human - I appreciated his honesty and sincerity in all that he shared.. Kudo to both of you for a great Share - " It was a breath of fresh air " - lol Lekka ! from Cape Town South Africa !
I think it's awesome that people like Wim Hof are bringing ancient wisdom, 1000s of years old, to the West in a way that Westerners can understand and appreciate and connect with. I have been studying Taoism for nearly 20 years and learned from my yoga teacher way back when I started about these kinds of mindful breathing techniques from him. He would teach out of his living room in Mansfield UK to 3 people per session, amazing guy. It's great to see these ideas and methods get some mainstream attention and backing in the scientific community. Big pharma is in for a shock when this really catches on.
I’ve had two children both boys. I would speak to them when they were in the womb and they would respond. The spirit enters the baby at conception with all due respect Mr. Hamilton. The Bible even talks about John the Baptist leaping in his mothers womb when Mary entered pregnant with Jesus. Other than that the interview is awesome I’ve learned a lot.
great interview ! I read about Laird's upbringing on Hawaii, and how tough it was being White in a land of people that resent you, must have been a real hard path for a young kid. Also seen film of him surfing the big waves, it was truly astonishing. Laird is one of the all time greatest athletes in the world.
Dang Lewis, you did it again. I love your interviews, you ask such good questions that go deeper than the normal surface questions. I love you Lewis and I love your show. I usually listen to each one twice because I listen to the podcast and then want see it so I watch it on RU-vid haha. Keep up the incredible work man! And one day I hope to interview you. :) -w
Lewis Howes yes, I’m subscribed and I’m watching as many as I can. I’ve become obsessed with being the best person I can be and your podcast is right up that alley. Thank you for all you do! 🙏🏻
This was great wisdom. I love Laird Hamilton. He is "Honest", and "True". (like Hemingway said was the most important thing to being a great writer!) In fact, he sort of reminds me of Hemingway! (only his paper is the water)....and come to think of it, Gabby Reece reminds me a lot of Martha Gelhorn. Very good "interviewer" too. You can tell Laird respects this guy...unlike some of the weirdos Laird suffers through.
What a great interview. Sincerely well done Lewis! So refreshing to hear "real" conversation without superfluous BS. The acknowledgement of your guests is outstanding. This really made my day on so many levels. Thank you.
I hear "The baby's soul comes in with the first breath" Check the time: not even two minutes in! Fuck, yeesh, uh, g2g. I'm sure Laird has nuggets of wisdom but I'm only only willing to eat so much shit.
I don't believe in the soul or spirit but that really resonated with me that a babies first breath is its new life and its last is its death. Obvious, I guess, but still powerful.
Kvasir so a premie that leaves the womb with out the power to breath or before a baby takes it first breath on the outside can ethically aborted. sweet
The ethical problem does not need to involve a soul. The trouble is human societies are in no way secure in the long term. As proven over, and over, since the dawn of time. We mess with the sacredness of motherhood and children at our peril, with or without a soul. Trouble for me is: This guy appears like a dumbass, William Thompson.
No, you got the quote wrong. He said the "spirit" enters the baby on the first breath. And that is wrong! The spirit enters at conception as life begins in the womb. The first breath is simply the first time it is out of the womb breathing on its own. You ARE a spirit, you HAVE a soul, you LIVE in a body.
He’s talking about breath but I feel like it’s so relevant for today about teamwork and competition. as a hip hop artist I love this dialog, I believe hiphop should hear this
