1 and 3 in the video. I get in the pocket with no defense or exit strategy and start head hunting. I did it sparring in karate and boxing haha. This video was very helpful. Thank you Jesse Sensei and Oliver Sensei. Oss!!!
I remember Oliver being silent and Jesse doing all the talking and explaining. Now they both interact which for me is so wholesome hahaha, love your contents everyday Jesse!
Wonderboy has a RU-vid channel and I recently liked one of his high kick videos even though I am notoriously hateful of both karate and Wonderboy, it was that good.
The last point can relate to the ego in sparring.when sparing with someone in a lower skill level using them as cannon fodder or when fighting a superior skilled person attempting to go hard to prove ourselves superior. Sparring is a learning opportunity.
Awesome teaching, Enkamp Bros! Love how you are combining your knowledge for us. That video was really on point. My biggest problem in sparring: how to deal with steamrollers (heavier - and fast - opponents)? Cheers from Australia!
Probably want to do a lot of lateral movement. You can't keep backing up, and trying to match them is playing their game. Circle and counter. Yes, well, easier said than done I expect.
@@purplelibraryguy8729 yes easier said than done indeed, haha ;-) You're right, it takes a lot of lateral evasions and counter-strikes from there... whenever I'm fast enough! As for matching them, yeah, nah. Cheers!
This is sooo helpful! I used to be good at sparring, but recently something has caused me to become less confident, which negatively affected my sparring. Thanks for making this video, Jesse and Oliver!
great video. I think the main issue comes from the confusion between sparring partner and opponent...the only opponent you have to face in the dojo is yourself!
I always enjoy watching you guys working together. You can see how much you have worked together and respect each other but you both also have your own unique styles which is fun when you guys get into sparring and/or technique demonstrations. Always fun and informative, thanks for sharing!
I train everyday in the kumite state team and I sparred an older senior and my sensei from Iran told us to “really fight” everytime in kumite. A chunk of my lips was hanging down to my chin . Honestly,I felt kinda cool 😂 to be able to have this kind of injury cause I am also a big UFC fan . But man I never thought of stuffs in this video . 🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟
Many times I have been doing sparring at my karate dojo, protecting my chin just as Oliver explains, and my sparring partner or even the sensei comments "this is not box". I don´t know if it is common to seen in karate dojos that protecting your face is not trainned, or it´s just my dojo. It seems to me like a big issue to seen sparring with a lack of footwork, head movement and protection of the face. Cheers!
When it comes to traditional karate sparring, it's a given that they'll try to teach you the competitive karate fighting, unless it's Goju Ryu or some other okinawan/older form, or unless it's not traditional karate. In traditional competitive karate everything goes to a point and you can't hit hard, so the focus is on distance, timing, in and out speed, and precision. It's very unfortunate that they limit themselves and us karate practicioners with such limiting rules... You can still learn useful things, and then move on to something else on your own or as a secundary martial art. What I find a shame is how karate got stuck on outdated rules when, if you look at okinawan/chinese roots of karate, the katas are full of combat applications that can't be displayed under these rules. Ironically, through Muay Thai you can put in practice much of what TRUE karate had in stock, even though most karate techniques are thought to be used in reaction for self defense.
I failed a grading in tae Kwon do because I punched like a boxer which I was so I did the most logical thing gave up Tae Kwon do and went kickboxing instead
@@gerardwhite2689 You did WT(World Taekwondo) I recommend you join an ITF(International Taekwondo Federation) club, both Kickboxing and ITF go hand in hand, and if Kickboxing is added, a majority of ths fighters will also be ITF Black belts.
Wow, cool strategy for real free sparring. The fact you spar this way regularly I believe is a big part of why you are able to analyze application of traditional technique so well.
This was a really good video! It took me years to learn these lessons. I'm sure my sensei said them at some point, but man if I aint a dummy for not listening sooner.
Luv this vid. I am a karateka exploring MMA making this video really helpful. The "pivot out" explains the movement drills our stand-up instructor has us do. Biggest problem in sparring thus far? Moving straight back in reacting to my opponents' combos setting me up for the double leg takedown. Change body is easier said than done when someone is trying to punch you in the face. Great video!
Study boxing for awhile. It will polish your foot work and movement. exit strategy: Lateral movements work well. Especially to the weak side of your opponent. Great video!
I'm the worst at sparring in my academy. I always get pounded, psyched out, etc. Goal for awhile has been to score one point. (Yes, it's that bad!) Thanks for the video. These look like things I can practice shadow boxing so hopefully after lockdown I'll be in a position to achieve my big goal. Love your instruction, attitude, and approach to teaching.
Another fantastic video about real fighting techniques and how to apply them yes learning to protect the face in a fight is very important something that students doing sport Karate need to take heed of greetings Edward
Nice video. I wish I knew this when I was practicing. I was watching some KO videos and I see the application of the first point you were talking about.
Great tips as always! I'd love to see your brother showing his favorite or go-to BJJ techniques/tactics when he ends up on his back and your Karate answer to the same situation. Do you think you could make that happen? Keep them videos coming! ❤🖖
Great channel!! I have a comment about sparring vs tournament. A problem with sparring is that students get used to using soft touches and when they go for tournaments, they’re not used to using full power or they run out of stamina. Same goes for getting hit. They’re not conditioned to receiving solid hits. Also, some kicks or punches won't work properly without applying some strength or speed.
Awesome! When I went from Karate to Full-Contact-Kickboxing I made often the first mistake, it took a while for me to "forget" the typical Karate-Punching and adapt the head movement or shoulder protection during striking. But I always use a exit strategy, like rolling out and Roundhouse to the body or head, something I learned during my Karate-Time :D
Again good stuff interesting there's an attack that no one is ever ready in any situation I won't give it away always watch your enemy closely all the time never leave one's self open block counter strike from all positions
Very helpful! Now if quarantine would lift here I could go apply these principles in sparring!! UNTIL then I'll consciously practice these! Love the channel guys!
Jessie, much respect to Oliver, he’s clearly an artisan on his technique, and I enjoy watching you it’s trade blows and spar, but please use some Okinawa technique to counter the grapples from Oliver! Love the content from the enkamp bros, much love from Australia 🇦🇺
First rule is get out the way, second always keep your eyes on the opponent. Third always be ready to block or guard or parry need be. Forth always keep your balance, never over extend in any direction.
What's a quick way to build your cardio especially when you are doing a 10 or 12 hour shift every day and you come home exhausted and all you can do is just a 10 or 15 minute dumbbell routine or bodyweight routine just to have something done and move on
This Video really helped me out. Been trying to find tips to get better at sparring and no video could really explain it well. I’ve been getting hit all the time but I think that’s gonna change now 😋 Thanks Jesse sensei and Oliver ;)
again...I JUST LOVE YOU(both;))its funny,its interessting...and thats the point...really helpfull...thanx again:D...liebe Grüße ausm kalten Deutschland!!!
Love the video great points, especially the last one, sometimes it happens to the best of us, i remember seeing a sport kumite, the guy didn't have an escape plan and was kicked in the head and the opponent gained points. Oliver explained it nicely, I'd always pivot to the side or clinch up, maybe throw or ashi barai. Even in point style you'll still need an escape plan.
very nice session I think in most cases best option to get improvement in combat is the style of practicing each tech for one long session every lesson for the first year and going back to classic training from time to time. Just a personal question Jessie (and you may dont like to answer) are you and your brother twins?? actually my little niece sitting next to me and likes to know. Best regards Michael
Had my first Karate fight today. I had the honor to fight against my sensei and got my ass handed to me quickly. And he just played lol... Thanks Jesse and Oliver! This is really good advice!
