Epilepsy warning: If you’re sensitive to flashing lights, skip this video!
Playing video games at work? Why not! It’s time for pro drummers to put some well-known rhythm games to the test. Watch Jared and Dave play through titles like Rock Band, Beat Saber and more as they rank each one based on how fun they are, how useful they are for learning rhythms, how accessible they are, and if they put existing drumming skills to use.
You’ll find out which ones they love, and which ones just don’t make the grade.
Will Dave school Jared at these games? Will Jared trash talk Dave so much he explodes? Watch the video to find out!
Thumper
This game was once a popular PS3 title, and was later re-released on PS4 with the VR option. You control a ‘beetle’ that cruises through a course, reacting with the controller as the rhythm changes. If you don’t hit the right button at the right time, your beetle blows up.
Jared’s Rating: 5/10
Dave’s Rating: 6.5/10
Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun!
A mini taiko simulator complete with plastic drum controller and plastic sticks, do you use your ears or eyes more in this game? You’re tasked with hitting the drum or rim when the circles get to the side of the screen. You need to play in time and on the right surface, either with one stick or two.
Jared’s Rating: 8/10
Dave’s Rating: 7/10
Ring Fit Adventure
Ready to sweat? This Nintendo Switch rhythm game will give you a surprisingly good workout. Ring Fit Adventure comes a wheel - plus a controller you put on your leg - and gets your whole body moving. You might be standing, you might be squatting, you might move to the left or to the right. Most actions happen on the downbeat in easier levels.
Jared’s Rating: 7/10
Dave’s Rating: 6/10
Rock Band
Out of all the games reviewed in this video, this is the only one where you play with actual drumsticks. Rock Band is a now classic game that’s been extremely popular for over a decade. If you aren’t familiar with it, you need to hit the right color of drum pad when the moving rectangles get to you (or stomp the pedal when the moving line gets to you).
Jared’s Rating: 7/10
Dave’s Rating: 7.5/10
Beat Saber
This VR game (typically played on the Playstation VR headset or with an Oculus) involves ‘slicing’ red and blue blocks with your lightsaber-esque controllers. While the blocks come quickly toward you, you also need to duck or dodge ‘walls’ and other obstacles that might get in your way.
We can’t stress this enough: make sure you have enough space to play this game so you don’t take out a real wall or a friend. Seriously.
Jared’s Rating: 8/10
Dave’s Rating: 9.5/10
Final consensus
If you want to improve your rhythm, get Taiko no Tatsukin (Jared’s favorite). It focuses on combinations (like groups of 4 and 5), and gets you moving your hands to different parts of the drum.
For a balance of fun, rhythm, and exercise in one game, get Beat Saber (Dave’s favorite).
And if you want a good cardio workout, get Ring Fit Adventure.
The fact that developers are gamifying music and music education is promising - it means that there are likely even more creative approaches to rhythm yet to come.
Do you play any rhythmic games? Which do you like, and which haven’t you tried yet? What games should Jared and Dave try next?

Phase Shift on the PC. It works with any Midi eDrum kit with full hi-hat and cymbals (or guitar, keyboard, etc), and utilizes songs from all the guitar hero/rock band games.

The “Rhythm Sight Reading Trainer” on IOS is clunky but for $3 it is worth checking out if you want to check your timing and practice with standard notation. Not really a game but you can compete with yourself. I think by default they set it tapping the screen and don't make it obvious that you can turn on the mic.

@@davidgagnon2924 yes, depending. I'm willing to bet that there are drummers out there who would be willing to donate, loan, or make the hardware available at lower than the normal cost for this kind of exposure. Hell, depending on their location, I would be happy to bring my 11 piece edrum kit with appropriate hardware for them to demonstrate with. But it was not even mentioned as a possibility. Clone Hero, Rock Band 3, and Phase Shift are hands down the best rhythm games that help you learn drums. I've been playing rock band and guitar since the drums came out and its what inspired me to get an acoustic kit. Now I have an e-kit and I have it set up to play on Clone Hero and I learn something new everyday. There's so many features on it nowadays. Song some show you what are and aren't ghost notes, which notes are accented, the difference between open and closed hi-hat, flams, etc. If you understand the basics of drumming its extremely useful to use. Mike Caputo(ex-Rings Of Satrun) makes songs for the game. Blake Richardson if BTBAM has given praise to players for playing his songs so well. At the end of the day, its a video game. But so many people use it for much more than just a game; its essentially a virtual visualized drum tab.

The secret to rockband if you're already a musician is to play on expert, especially if you know the song already. Once I realized that, it became much more fun and doable. Now I play clone hero hooked up to my roland e-kit with pro cymbals so it's about as realistic as it gets.

Rock Band was the thing that first introduced me to drumming, and to this day it's my favourite way to play. I have auditory processing issues, which makes learning by ear particularly challenging. Sheet music for songs I like isn't often easy to find or access, and learning from sheet music just feels a bit 'academic'. But playing songs through a game like Rockband (Or the modern equivalent Clone Hero) hooked up to a standard e-kit, is the easiest way for me to learn songs, and has that 'gameified' element that makes it more fun. When you've got the calibration set up correctly, and especially if you're playing it with an e-kit, it's an exceptional tool for learning drums. It's a more intuitive and visually appealing alternative to traditional sheet music, you get feedback on mistakes (by dropping your streak).

I've been playing an acoustic set on no fail mode. I also started from just playing RockBand. And I completely agree with you on sheet music. It's hard to find and even harder to follow. I've seen some programs that put the sheet into a continuous scroll with a bar for timing, but it was still hard to find sheet music to put into the program. And at 54 yrs old, those notes were hard to see.....hehehe. I don't get a score, but it's still very satisfying to play along with some of my favorite songs.

I only realized recently that it helped my learning a lot, my sense of rhythm and timing is better than moat starting out. Not to mention the main part, it made me realize how cool and rewarding it was to practice the songs I liked in a fun setting! :) A part of the game that's really cool, it doesn't penalize you for filling in empty gaps with drumming, so I get to show off when playing competitively online.

I first learned how to play drums using Rock Band. I play around 50 real life gigs a year with a cover band and I have rock band to thank for that. Rock Band teaches you thousands of grooves, fills and more. The practice mode is great as well because you can practice songs at a slower tempo. The only down side to rock band is that it doesn't really teach you dynamics, hi hat lifting or any other real world drum stuff like tuning. I still play rock band to this day using an electronic drum kit and it's awesome!

hey guys, I loved that y'all did this! I remember hooking up the RCA cables from my PS2 to an old TV and some big speakers in my practice shed, throwing on Guitar Hero Metallica (on practice mode) and playing for hours on my actual kit. It quickly became one of the most precious resources i had when it came to practicing on the kit as a teenager. The rhythms are all there and if you know the song, you can associate the colors with your different drums/cymbals.

Used to play Rock Band and Guitar Hero; drums were obviously the most fun instrument because they were closest to the real thing (well, except vocals). My brother got a fancy drum controller with rubber cymbals like on a normal electronic kit; apparently you could hook it up to a DAW or something and use them like regular electronic drums. I don't think he ever got around to setting that up, but it could make a nice transition from gamer to musician.

Thank you very much for this video, if I haven't got the idea earlier I would have bought Rockband after watching this video. 😁 I had the idea of learning the drums last fall, just popped in my head at the age of 27. I tried to learn guitar about 10 years ago but it wasn't my thing. And just last fall I realized that I have always listened especially on the drums when listening to music and so I bought Rockband to see if my independence of limbs and rythm feeling is working. It was a lot of fun, but I wanted a more realistic feeling. So I sold the Rockband stuff and bought Rockband 3, a midi adapter and a TD 4 KP (unfortunately I don't have space for a larger kit and living in a flat it's not possible to play a-drums) in January. So now I'm practicing with lessons on youtube and Rockband 3 and the internal coach of the e-drum kit and very happy with it. When I practice with Rockband I only put one earbud in so I can hear what I'm playing plus the audio from the game. I can confirm that it trains your ear and you notice when you should open the hi-hat for example, which is not included in the game. So what about trying Rockband 3 on Pro-Drums mode with an e-kit next time? 😁

What's so great about rockband, is that all these drumless songs can be found on youtube, and you can just play along. I personally find it much easier to read than regular notes, because it has different colors, and it's less cluttered with details (I tend to remember those anyway). It's a really important thing I use, example, I'm currently training quintuplets, and there's "the grudge" by tool on youtube, and it took me just a few days to learn that entire song, despite its complicated structure. If you really wanted to play the game itself (I don't care for it, I prefer listening and correcting myself that way, rather than let the computer correct me), you don't need much hardware, there are midi controllers for 40 or so bucks that will convert the midioutput on your drumset to the outputs of an xbox controller.

OK, so some people has commented on using a e-kit with Rock Band I actually play Rock Band 3 with mine. You need a controller that can convert MIDI to the MIDI that the controller transmits to the XBOX (Playing in XBOX). I play with the setting as Expert and DrumsPro, then you will have a distinction among the cymbals and the toms (Same colors but different icon) that of course correspond to different MIDI, you can even set the high hat open or close with a different color (blue, yellow) and the foot (as yellow again) so you have that action as well (again as I said I know first hand since I am doing so). If you want double pedal, no problem, again it is you regular e-Kit just set the MIDI note and that's all! Regarding the limitation in songs there are websites were you can legally download songs created by fans to play with the game. Those songs that are in the game are liked on those sites to the game's DLC site for you to buy them from RockBand and download or if it doesn't exist there you can get it from the fans. So to me it is pretty much a 9/10 and really great for fun, even practice drumming. Definitely a great game

Other than that, it's the same as actually playing the song, and with an electronic drum is a blast. I got Guitar Hero (similar to Rock Band) with the full band gear over a decade ago and that made me wanna buy a real drum kit and yeah if you're playing Expert you're pretty much playing the song, which I thought was amazing. You just gotta make sure you calibrate the settings right. I've also got Ring Fit Adventure a few months ago and the rhythm game part is just a small minigame, for those who didn't know. The whole appeal is being a fitness game so it's definitely more about working out (made me laugh when you said "why is my squat not registering?" bc you really need to squat the f down), the whole game is fun and intense but the minigames are mostly for fun, I like it.

You should try Rhythm Heaven/Rhythm Tengoku (another Nintendo Game). Each mini game are different, and some of them are copied by a thousands of mobile games. Regardless the game is pretty old so you need a Wii or a 3DS or a DS to play. I guess the new version is still in the work, who knows?

with rock band, I want to bring up a game called clone hero. In the most recent public test builds of the game, they allow support for e-drums. so it's pretty much the same thing as rock band, but you can have a more songs than almost if not all the rock band games with dlc combined.

I have a PS VR2 and Beat Saber is to my surprise one of the most enjoyable games. I'm a former drummer but I'm not sure it helps a lot. There are some crazy youtube videos, people doing difficult songs at the expert+ mode, first attempts. Like this girl, Otterwoldly. I don't think I will ever get at her level.

i played Rockband for 3 years plus before transiting to learn on playing a real drum set and it went even further now. But my opinion is that it helps if you have so much passion to actually spend money to buy a real Vdrum and convert to play on rockband with setup as real as possible (including placing more single zone cymbals). ** you need to play on Expert Pro drum difficulty It will help to build up your time keeping and certain basic stickings when you want to pick up drumming

This was a really fun watch also don’t quote me on this but I think that you can use a real electronic drum kit to play rock band instead of the cheap plastic one that comes with the game but I could be wrong I think I heard this from 65drums I think he talks about it in the video called the drum module with the best coaching feature. If anybody is interested

I was a guitarist which the first guitar hero got me into playing a real guitar. I was really good at guitar hero but obviously doesn't translate into real guitar. Guitar hero Metallica came out and my roommates loved to play it but at that point playing expert was a little boring unless you play harder songs and everyone else couldn't even hold a drumstick right so I at least learned that and worked my way up to expert in a few weeks. Wasn't great but we all had a good time. Later I bought rock band 4 and really got interested in the drumming part so I played as many songs as I could then bought the extra kit for expert plus. Still wasn't great but could play most songs. I enjoyed it so much I decided to try real drums but couldn't get a real kit so I bought a cheap electric drum set and fell in love. Ended up getting a better kit with some practice within 4 months. I defended to go get lessons and my drum teacher was impressed with the fact I only played rock band and have been playing electric drums for only 4 months. I still had to learn the nuisances of real drums cause my lessons were on real kits but my teacher thought I was a player for over a year on my first lesson and I just told him I learned from rock band. Later he did explain i missed out on some key details and I wasn't good with a high hat but after he got me working on that stuff he said he doesn't think rock band is a great starting place because you miss out on the little things that are important but if you learn the beats on rock band and practice real drums he agreed that he greatly improved the rate i was learning because it was a fun way to learn and kept my hands and limbs moving. Tldr rock band drums helped me get a good basis and along with playing a real kit can show some improvement that's entertaining. Would I be better if I did timed practice instead of rock band maybe but it made me want to try and get better to keep up with the game so kept me enjoying practice so I ended up "playing" more.

It might be on a flat screen - Thumper is one of those games I can't imagine any other way than playing it in VR. It's not a game you can just talk over either when it grips you, but I guess it's a bit more for game proficient people who can take a challenge. Also VR (which is my favorite medium for rhythm games at this stage) is Audica, which is easily my favorite rhythm game next to Thumper and, somewhat surprisingly, Tetris Effect.

I do this regularly. I set up my laptop with ear buds and pick out a lot of metal songs on a drum chart. So it's like reading tabs as a guitarist. I can learn songs fairly quickly like from Dream Theater. Unless you have a super fine ear or can read music it's the best way to go.

I would check out the Pro Drums difficulty on rock band that was introduced with, I believe, Rock Band 3? As a beginner drummer, the main way I practice is playing along with the Pro Drums tracks on my electric kit, and if you've got the right sounds on your kit, you're almost spot on with playing the actual song. You can look up other people playing the songs on RU-vid and just play along, you don't even need the actual game (given someone has made a video of it). I think that'd give you a much better rating on how well it helps to learn real drums. The only thing lacking is open and closed hi-hat hits, but all that takes is a little bit of listening to recognize what you need to do for it :)

@@BenMcDougall Rock Band 2 let you utilize cymbals as an alternative input to the pads. In Rock Band 1 and 2 (as well as all the spinoffs I believe), you have Red, Yellow, Blue, Green and Orange inputs charted. In the pro drum mode of Rock Band 3 and Rock Band 4 you'll have Red, Yellow, Yellow Cymbal, Blue, Blue Cymbal, Green, Green Cymbal and Orange charted. The quality of the charting varies by track (I remember The Grateful Dead tracks being pretty innacurate), but generally they tend to be identical to what you'd normally be hitting and when in the song. They tried a bunch of other whacky "pro" stuff in 3 as well that didn't end up sticking for 4 like that squier guitar that essentially required that you play tabs, but that's beside the point. Rock Band 3 and 4 are the go-to titles for people that are interested in the drumming component.

I understand keeping things simple... but there is an opportunity to have ALOT more fun and real playing with Rockband. Rockband 3 has Pro Drums which adds cymbals. Then connect a Roland V-Drum kit with a Rockband Midi Adapter. Finally turn the drum track off in the game. Now you get the timing feedback and song scores plus the dynamics, feel and sounds of a real kit. The only downside to Rockband is it doesn't teach dynamics, but with the setup above, you can play dynamically. I use a TDW20 in Pro Drums on Expert and there are some really challenging and fun songs available. One more tip... in the options menu you can keep the real fills instead of a generic "do anything" bar. It is fun to improvise fills, but playing the original track fills requires clean playing with a good understanding of that drummer's style. I have 30yrs playing experience and have advanced considerably just from playing RB3. All the songs are transcribed so it's a great way to learn new styles of drumming and music. Sight-reading, listening skills and relaxed play has been improved greatly. 10/10

I didn't know it back then, but I think playing Band Hero on the drums more than guitar was what led to my playing drums later. Probably why I was somewhat natural starting off. Still took time to get used to but. Rock Band is definitely not the same as playing the real instruments, but I think it is pretty good and helpful in a weird way. The taiko game is pretty fun too, I never played taikos before prior to playing it in a shopping centre arcade. Good fun😄🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁.

If you guys would have had the pro set (includes 3 cymbals for a somewhat real experience) for the drums on rock band you would probably give it a better rating. Also you guys were playing the first game it’s been improved so much since that game came out with rock band 4. I’ve always wanted to play the drums and this game was what gave me my 2nd drum set that wasn’t too loud and could play at home. Unfortunately they took the practice Mode off on the last game they made which was sad for me.

OK, I don't see any comments about this from my CTRL + F (edit, there were some in comment threads) so you missed an open-source game that emulates the Konami Japan drummania (GITADORA) franchise called DTXMania. It's a bit like Rock Band in that the chips come down the screen and you need to hit them in time, but that's where the similarities end. You can hook up any eDrum kit (with USB Midi out) to your PC and install this game then play with up to 10 pads. Double-bass and open/closed hi-hats are supported. I've got a Yamaha DTX-452K set up with the extra ride cymbal module and it plays extremely well. There is a strong community out there that makes the simfiles (the "software" that makes each song work). While the focus is on Asian tracks, there is a growing community of western simfiles that you can get your hands on. I confess to learning how to play drums (and learning bad habits because I didn't have an instructor correcting my mistakes) on drummania in the arcade back in the 90s and early 2000's and would've spent over $1000 on credits on the game, but I don't regret a single dollar spent. The software also has a practical purpose in that you can code your own rudiment tracks and practice your drum technique with real-time judgement on your timing. Here's an example: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Oo87Uo2eE_Q.html

Without watching, let me chime in. If you're a musician, you won't be very good at a game like Rock Band, especially on the 'instrument' that you play for real. However, if you AREN'T a musician, this can be a good step toward getting into music. The guitar buttons teach you to stretch your fingers apart, and to slide your hand up and down the neck. The drums though- especially if you get the Pro Drum cymbals- are a huge step toward simulating a standard kit. If you can get into Pro Drums on Rock Band, then you can begin to apply what you learn toward a real drum kit. I've been playing Rock Band since it first came out, and currently have well over $1,000 invested in DLC alone. A couple months ago, I bought a digital drum kit, and I've been following along with Pro Drum track videos on RU-vid to learn how to play songs on it. There are a few imperfections with this, but once you learn which blue cymbals are ride cymbals vs. which ones are open high-hat cymbals, it gets a lot smoother. Is Rock Band good for learning to drum? If you've never drummed before, then yes, absolutely. It's a fantastic starting point for learning with a much softer price of entry. I've probably spent close to $500 on my kit, and it thankfully is cheaper than an acoustic kit, but if you want to just figure it out, $100 for a Rock Band 'Band in a Box' bundle is really good.
