READ THIS BEFORE COMMENT: Let me clear up that this video is not a demo of a product. And especially not A SOUND DEMO of a product. As you can CLEARLY SEE in the title, it's asking a broader question whether or not we still need traditional amps, and what can be used to replace it, and what the consequences of this would be. I'm explaining how you can use a pedal like this, at home are in live situations. I used this particular pedal to see if it actually works with my pedalboard (HENCE THE SHITLOAD OF EFFECTS ON THE GUITAR). I made a demo of *how I would use it* at this particular time. Just made a little track to support it. I do not really make traditional demos, I think demos are boring. And because it's almost Xmas you can win one! Ok, bye! X

For some people, this would be great.... I'm not sure if I'm one of those people though. I don't have any pa equipment or anything, but I already have 6 guitar amps. This has me wondering if I should remove the preamp in my Mustang II, and use something like this. I never liked it much anyways, so it's worth trying.

I personally embrace this new modeling tech. When I first started guitar 20 years ago, studio quality gear wasn’t made for the consumer market. You went out and got an OK guitar and plugged into whatever shitty combo you could afford, then amassed a collection of pedals to shape your sound. Nowadays your average aspiring musician can have all sorts of capabilities at their fingertips for cheap. You can get a great sound without having to save up, wait years and hope you didn’t blow your money on the wrong product when you could finally afford it.

An interesting and creative tool. I like that it has knobs instead of all sub menus like so much digital equipment. I'd play around with it for days but I wouldn't sell my tube amps. I've yet to hear digital gear that recreates the dynamic range, compression, variability of crunch and finger/pick response that tube amps have.

Hi ! I play with a lot of multi effects pedals with preamps and cab simulations and I love it because it's usefull for many "on stage" situations. Sometimes when you just start playing in a town (I just arrived in Paris ) it's hard to carry guitar, pedals and amp everywhere you have to perform and a preamp pedal is a very nice alternative... But anytime I go back to a good ol' valve amplifier I really feel the difference ! Great video production tho I would like to know how you do those too ! Cheers!

The funny thing is, I was reading comments while listening to the "demo" and was waiting for the guitar to enter the mix. The demo ended and I realized that "to me" there were no guitars in the song at all. I guess every sound I heard was coming from a guitar. I guess those processed tones are what some people are looking for, but not me. I play an old Les Paul through an old Marshall with no pedals. Could this preamp replace the tone I have become used to? Paul you are a great player and a gifted teacher. I thank you for all your entertaining videos.
@jacobl6572
@jacobl6572 4 года назад
Of course it can, they have all sorts of amp modelers out there, even in tiny amp combos. You just have to push the Marshall amp button on them and your good to go. ...Actually Rick Beto and some other guys did a comparison with a 50 watt Marshall and the Helix, to be honest it sounded pretty good but it was not exact and both were still compressed into digital You Tube. You really have to hear thing live to hear the real difference.

I think even thought a good modeler could mimic your sound pretty damn good many could not tell the difference you sound like the modeler would lack the feeling of a real amp. For me playing a modeler thru pc and monitors sounds really good and its far better for recording at home than any amp, I would still plug it in the fx loop when I play just for fun. The tone can be just the same but it coming from a pair of egg size speakers versus 4x12´ the feeling is way different.

I love vintage gear and I love modern gear. There are no rules,This is Music, This is Art. You can use all vintage low-Fi al the way down to a Reel to Reel 4 Track recording (i.e. Jack White) or a 5,000.00 Dollar Mayones guitar through a Kemper into your Torpedo speaker emulator into digital recording unit. You can use this and You can use that.It makes no difference,It makes all the difference........? Do what you want and have fun, it's music. We now have an infinite platform or canvas to create whatever we want. I just love companies like Mooer and Nux that make it affordable for musicians that are not rock stars. the working musician.The guy that goes to work and cleans your clogged drains, Fixes your washing machine, works in a warehouse, the full time student that works part time. That working musician. The Mooer Pre-Amp Live is the Poormans Kemper. I love it. I want one. First Time Viewer, Listener, I get it. Thank You Paul.

Times change... (I don't know if I like it but it's fact)
@marvinrockon
@marvinrockon 5 лет назад
It's part of the evolution and I like the steps it takes. There were people probably criticising Amps back than that it isn't music anymore, real talent is playing an acoustic guitar and that everything else is basically cheating or not music. (Heck, there are still noblets saying that a real guitarist plays acoustics only nowadays. Those people are fun...) Times change and with it the gear we use or can use. I love my Amps more than any plugin or "rigs in a bag", but there's no way in denying that things like that are pretty cool and a step forward. It's like with the TVs. They were bulky, heavy and had less functions not to many years ago and while the flat screens had to be developed over years to display the eye candy we are used to today, boy, are we happy with those flatscreens nowadays. I know how you feel, but it's just natural, since we feel comfortable with what we used so far. But that new technology and the ones coming in the future aren't bad things. Especially since we are still the force, who create the music we play. These are just tools if we be honest. It will all still be us who need to practice and write music. These tools will still be tweakable to our taste and preferences. It's the future and it's up to use if we personally embrace it or not. But it's coming. It's on our way and there's no way we can stop change and technological advances, developments and steps in directions we might find strange in the beginning. I still find it shocking how many great guitar sound on Albums are made with Kemper or the Axe-FX and no one could tell, including me, but I welcome every convenient evolution that still let's the people do the music.
@tomrabbani
@tomrabbani 5 лет назад
@@marvinrockon I couldn't agree more. Especially as a young (17) musician I can't really relate to, or afford, the "Vintage" guitars, amps and designs that everyone keeps pushing at me. So it's refreshing to know that the music technology is changing with the times and that there's something new for my generation too.
@alexhoward1884
@alexhoward1884 4 года назад

now that's what I call good timing. I'm actually looking into buying something along those lines, and have been looking at different (cheaper) products like audio interfaces to connect my guitar to the PC. I've neglected my guitar practice for a couple of years and seriously thinking of getting back to it. I don't have the budget/space to get an actual amp/pedals though. Can anyone advise something good? And how exactly is this preamp different from an audio interface? BTW Paul, really looking forward to your learnpracticeplay thing, if it'll cover music theory I'm all in!
@yoyoninjaboy6431
@yoyoninjaboy6431 5 лет назад
This is a completely different product than an audio interface. An audio interface is a digital to analog converter (DAC) which is required to record anything to a PC. DACs have preamps but they are not made for guitars and will not distort pleasantly (most of the time). The built in cabinet feature would actually make this a pretty slick practice recording and even live solution. That said with my experience with Hughes and kettners Redbox (via a tubemeister 36) you're much better off using amp plugins and impulse responses than just cabinet emulation. Alternatively use this instead of amp sim but still use impulse responses with the cab sim off. Or go ham and get some tube amp and a reactive load (with impulse responses) or ox box. Or just mic the damn thing lol. The Scarlett 2i2 interface is very popular sounds good and is affordable.
@msykala
@msykala 5 лет назад
@@yoyoninjaboy6431 sorry it took me so long to respond. Thank you for your tips. Is it not better then to simply buy a cheaper amp? Like a mustang v2 or something along those lines? Being a worship pastor at a relatively small church, I've been on the journey of low volume guitar sounds. I currently use a 1979 Fender Super Reverb into a suhr reactive load into a digitech cab driver. Most digital preamp or even drive sounds that I have heard or played almost do too much of the work. I havent really found something digital that feels like it still has the headroom and the responsiveness of a real amp. I'm open to my mind being changed, because life would be a little less complicated for gigs outside of church, and I would love to be able to put together a low-cost setup for my other guitar players that's at a quality I would not be ashamed to use. Also the digitech seems to be the weakest link of my chain right now, I dont love it. I'd love some suggestions there as well. Thanks!

@@Disqualified_Identity It seems as though you didn't watch the video. I'm not saying that at all. I'm saying that he didn't show how an amp simulator could get anywhere close to the quality of an actual amp because his demonstration involved nothing but turning the sound of his guitar into a synth where you can't even hear the original guitar sound. This was a poor presentation of what he was trying to convey.

"Do we still need amps?" This product, Kemper, etc. shows us that we don't. Do we still need pedals? Again, Helix, Kemper, Axe-FX, etc. show us that we don't. Do we still need guitars? MIDI, synths, etc. show us that we don't? Do we still need guitarists? Artificial Intelligence shows us that we don't. Technology can conceivably replace everything, but screw that. I'd rather hear SRV with his Strat, TubeScreamer and Dumble, or Angus with his SG and Marshall, or BB King, Lucille and an L5, or some bluesman on a porch with a guitar from the Sears Roebuck catalog. Lugging heavy gear is a pain, but they're not called "working musicians" for nothing. Technology is a very convenient tool, but it has a slow, deliberate insidious knack of making the user less and less relevant. Keep playing your red Strat and ToneKing, Paul. You all sound great together.

I don't think it should replace an amp, pedal or else but rather be an alternative of those things. I've seen lots of touring musicians using multi FX units, midi controllers and all sorts of digital stuff. Johnny Marr from The Smiths uses a Boss GT100, Depeche Mode uses midi controllers live and it sounds good, you literally can't hear the difference BUT they still use their analogue gig in the studio and on their records. So it's a nice balance, we should be happy we have such amazing tools these days! Analogue or digital, we should use every kind of resource available.
@vierkp
@vierkp 5 лет назад
i think it is a big difference between technology replacing human activity and technology supporting it. Technology could replace guitar playing only, if you are interested in not more than what comes out of the speaker. no choice for a guitarrist. you are interessted in creating and forming sound and music by the interaction of your brain, your ears, hands, and your guitar. maybe even more parts of your body😎. technology can help you doing so without owning, carrying and lifting tons of heavy glass tube and transformer iron loaded gear. what one considers as a heavy working musician might by perceived as heavy work force wasting musician by others.
@AtomicMug
@AtomicMug 5 лет назад
@@dspindola94 Everything you said is true, and I'm not trying to completely bash technology. But to me, it's made a lot of today's music sound a lot more sterile. All of the great musicians have a unique, distinctive sound, and while digital technology and the unlimited options it offers can help someone find their own sound more conveniently and for a lot less money, too many options can be a distracting rabbit hole that holds them back. Being able to sound like everything can also make you sound like nothing special.

Ok, I was a bit confused. You said it was probably the worst demo ever, so I figured you just mutated the signal with strymon etc. I thought that maybe just based off of how much you were enjoying it in the video that there was a guitar part that got lost on the upload or something. @@PaulDavids
