Thank you for the video! I think it helps to hire a Steuerberater in the first year in Germany, to see what's what and get a maximum return, cause one can declare all the moving for the job expenses, double household with a spouse, tickets visiting them, etc. But then if you're a regular employee - it's totally doable on your own afterwards, especially considering that Steuerberater's fee might exceed the tax return and you can end up in the minus :/
@simplegermany
@simplegermany 2 года назад
Yes, we fully agree! The moment it gets complicated a Steuerberater really is worth it.

I use Elster. It is difficult to find the correct places to enter information, the first time. If you do file taxes and rent a flat, or own a flat, some of the costs can offset some tax. Basically it's 20% of the Lohnkosten in the yearly Nebenkostenabrechnung. Also several insurances ( haftpficht , Risikolebens ) can be entered, it's confusing where to enter them, as they can be either entered as Werbungskosten or Sonderausgaben. Have a nice day everyone.

Turbo Tax in the US is easy, I will try not filing in Germany this year unless I get a notice from the finanzamt. Wiso Steuer is another online option I've heard of that I may try. If you use a steuerhilfeverein you have to cancel the membership

This is again one masterpiece of bureaucracy-Erklärung! It is ahead of me and I'm likely to return here, but for now I only wanna share I first heard of such "animal" as tax returns??! years ago when I was working for a Quebec-Canadian project and people told me they actually _can_ benefit from taxes being returned to them. Of course over time I learned that it's not as literal as it sounds, but still I started to listen a bit more carefully. What you explain here sounds really clear, of course when you follow with each sequence of information. Thanks a great deal for it.. and I learned to #smoothly say Lohnsteuerhilfeverein thanks to the blooper. 🤣 I can now say it fast ten times (although I know Jen doesn't believe me now)

I tried to read the long list on your website and it's sure to be something amazing, and performing great.

Thanks so much for the video. I have a question and I hope you would help. Can tax declaration of the previous years be problematic to receive ALG 1 in case of losing job (assuming the employee is eligible for the benefit in general)?
@colinmackenzie4363
@colinmackenzie4363 3 месяца назад
No problem, I've been unemployed receiving ALG 1, and it's no problem to receive a tax refund. It may be a problem, when your ALG 1 runs out and you receive Burgergeld/HarzIV (from Jobcenter). A friend of a friend managed to get her tax refund, by getting the tax refund sent to a friends bank account. 😃

Usually the tax authorities are only interested in the periods of time you have been in the country. I moved to Germany from Hungary in September. The German tax authorities asked about the rest of the year just to see that I was not working in Germany at that time. That's my experience at least :).

Another cultural schock in Germany is that people talk a lot about the "Steuererklärung"... and many times they don't accept invitations because they are doing that. I've never heard an italian or spanish person even to mention it... Danke für das nützliche Video! :-)

Hey, love this video. I have a question. I moved to Germany last year September as an Azubi. October and November i got a 2. Job. However My Steuer class only Changed to 6 in December until this year March. When it changed my 2. Job was registered as my main employer and i was getting taxed with Steuerklasse 6 on my main salary. I went to Finanzamt and corrected it. I havent had the 2. Job since November last year but i was being taxed tax class 6 for 4 month after i stopped. Do i quality for Steuererklärung at the end of the year?

Actually I have situation and not sure if it's possible or not. Can we have two different tax classes in the same year ? We landed here in Jan 2022 and my spouse was not working till June 2022 and we both were somehow put into 1/1 tax class as our marriage was not yet recognised by german authorities (saying they are waiting some papers from the immigration, not exactly sure what it is). Now can we have like be in tax class 3/5 till June and then change to 4/4 as we owe similar incomes now. Or else we will end up paying extra tax for 5 months.
@simplegermany

A change of tax class implies that you will have two different classes during that year. Best consult a tax consultant for individual questions.

let's say, a student earns €20/hour through Werkstudent or part-time at an academic institution. Normally an international student on a student Visa is allowed to work for 20 hours a week. Considering this ideal case he earns 400 a week and 1600 a month. Non-taxable limit was around 420 a month. Can this person also file IT Returns ( Steuererklärung)?

Hi, thank you so much for the video. This is my first time filing taxes in Germany. Wish I had seen it before.. My wife and I have tax classes 5 and 3 respectively. My wife filed her taxes individually (using an online app) and now when I went to file my taxes, the tax consultant said I need to pay €4000 more because we didn't file it jointly 😭 my wife's assessment is complete and i received the letter 5 weeks back so I was told it's not possible to withdraw the tax filing. How do I rectify this error?or u mentioned in the first part of the video , not everyone is mandated to file taxes. Can I not file this year? I didn't have multiple jobs or additional income
