If you want to know how to audition, the first thing you need to learn is the terminology. The last thing you want to do is show up in a casting director's office and not know what they are talking about when they say things like "cheat to the camera" or "Jim will be your reader". This video is a list of the 20 most common terms you will hear at an audition. Make sure you know all of them! That's my audition advice for the day!

Once the director showed me some pictures on his phone I should copy. A few minutes later, I asked to see those pictures again. Nobody understood... "What pictures? Why?" Someone finally got it. "Reference. Show him the reference" Ah OK. Now I'll never forget "reference". I'm an American in Korea, so there is some communication difficulty anyway.

Years ago, a prospective agent in an initial interview said off-handedly that she wasnt going to ask me for a monolouge. I just fell into the one I had in my back pocket... she was so surprised she wouldn't let me leave till I signed with that agency. Monologues are but a tool and it's good to have one (or two) in your acting quiver. But I agree, scene study should be emphasized more and especially early.

Love this video, helpful and clear as usual. 🙌 A little off topic but I wonder what your advice would be for someone just getting into the Atlanta film industry now, during this crazy time with the pandemic? I assume most things are on pause, but would you still recommended looking for online classes and places to self-submit video auditions? Or perhaps you recommend moving to Atlanta down the road because of a lack of work? Lmk, and really, thanks so much for all your work.
@ActingCareerCenter
@ActingCareerCenter 4 года назад
The pandemic is still evolving and nobody really has concrete answers right now so anything I would say would just be guessing on my part. Continuing to train via virtual classes is always a good idea. Self submitting to projects that are starting up is fine but if it is a non-union project, make sure to check if they are following all safety precautions. As far as moving goes, that's gotta be a personal decision for you. The lack of work is universal right now, not just Atlanta.

@ActingCareerCenter
@ActingCareerCenter 3 года назад
Every audition is different and expectations are different depending on the circumstances. If you were given a 12 page audition and it is due in less than 24 hours, then they probably don't expect you to be off book. However, if you are given a 5 page audition and you have a couple days to work on it, then you are expected to be off book. Personally, I aim to be off book for 99% of my auditions.

@gertkryeziu1759 4 года назад
Acting Career Center I have a follow up question when you are in the audition and you picked a certain reaction does the person who is reading the other lines go along or they look at you in a bad way because that is one of my fears in acting
@ActingCareerCenter
@ActingCareerCenter 4 года назад
@@gertkryeziu1759 I agree with Alannah's answer. Make a choice and commit to it. Don't worry about doing it "right" because there is no such thing. Everyone has a different interpretation. The purpose of an audition is not to show that you can read the mind of the director and know what he/she wants to see. The purpose of the audition is to show that you can act. If they want you to react differently, they will tell you. If they give you a redirect, that doesn't mean you did anything wrong.
