You really nailed it Mark. Starting with the 6 and fading into the 12 hammers the point home. I’m curious if any of your viewers ended up getting their first 12 string AFTER they found your channel. I did. I never had much luck with the 12-string probably because of being too impatient. Mark is a great player, teacher and motivator. His accessibility and how well this community interacts is a huge motivator. Five might be a little too many, but I never thought I’d have 1 and now I’m looking for another one. I believe it has made me a more well rounded player as well as a better listener. Awesome video!

Thanks so much Randy. I REALLY appreciate that. So many youtubers lose touch with their audience after they get a couple thousand subs. I work hard at maintaining relationships and I'm accessible to everybody. I think I'd have five times the subs if people knew all they have to do is email me any question, concern, lesson tip, whatever. I hope you have a great weekend. Mark

Watching Mark's channel finally convinced me to get a 12-string. I'm waiting for my Harley Benton that is on order since June but not expected by Thomann until September. I guess a lot of folk had been watching Mark's demo of the HB and decided to buy so they sold out!

@@truthstillmatters59 I didn’t have one but when I would try to play one back in the day I sounded horrible. After discovering Marks channel I really wanted to try again. My local guitar store had a few budget guitars that I just couldn’t get to sound good either. They set one up really nicely for me and that did the trick. I always knew a good setup was important but maybe more so on a 12-string.

Mark, your composition sounded much fuller and richer on the 12 string. The Beatles Hard Day's Night got us hooked on the 12 string sound, but within a year they were double tracking 6 strings, and we really didn't know the difference. I'd say having a really good acoustic 6 string is the most important place to start. After that, well, it's up to the individual player. It's very difficult to "unhear" More Than a Feeling, or other seminal 12 string songs. My answer is you "must have" a quality 6 string acoustic guitar. Do we really need a 12 string? Some people can live on peanut butter sandwiches; most people like more variety. Another great episode, Mark. Personally, I think you must have a 12 string. Your show just wouldn't be the same without one. Take care & Peace!
@8MinuteAxe
@8MinuteAxe 3 года назад
Hey Michael. Great example of the double sixes is Everybodys Trying to be my baby and Lewison boom says they double tracked the intro to 8 Days. Theres definitely a difference in tone. More Than a Feeling is a great example of that classic 12 string picking but I think I that's a double tracked 12. Just for fun I tried to play the six 5, 10, and 15ms apart. Doesnt work. Just phasing. Needs to be two separate guitars played, preferably in stereo. Thanks for all the support. Take care and stay safe. Mark

@8MinuteAxe
@8MinuteAxe 2 года назад
Hey Robert. If you just started playing, I would recommend that you get 6 good months under your belt and then consider a 12-string. Let's face it, learning to play guitar can be frustrating at times and anything you can do to mitigate the frustration is a step in the right direction. The 12-string requires more hand strength and more accuracy both with the picking hand and the fretting hand. I've been teaching for over 25 years and I've distilled my thoughts on the best and most effective ways to practice in a few short videos. I encourage you to check them out: ru-vid.com/group/PLHs47cXmf1DQyWozhXvRjnpduWmIbBxqf. FYI, I don't sell anything so this is not any kind of sales pitch. Everything on the channel is 100% free. The sound of every song is just SO much more full with the 12-string guitar. The way you played a part on the 6 and then went directly to the 12 was an excellent, and fair, way to compare songs on both. The 12-string is great for strumming and picking, as you said. The 12-string is without a peer for picking, and hearing the songs you did reminded me of how much I need to improve my picking.

12 strings just sound so beautiful. I went to my local guitar shop a few weeks ago and played around with a 12 string acoustic. I have been thinking about that guitar ever since. It just sung, like I wasn't even playing it but just allowing it to make its incredable sound. Hopfully its still there once I get the money to buy it. I've never played a guitar I wanted more.

Yep,.. found your channel a week or two ago,.. dusted off my old 1971 Martin Sigma, threw on some new strings and started hungering for a 12 string again, hahaha! Can't afford one but,.. maybe I can mic it and run it through my octave and get a similar result. We'll see. Still have a few of my old toys left in a box. It's been over 30 years but we'll see how it goes. Nearly like starting all over but not quite. Ha! Thanks for inspiring this old man, Mark. Appreciate you!

You cannot make a bad video!! (And I hope you never do lol), this video was great, man! The way you faded from the 6 into the 12 really shows the difference between the two. Personally, I love me a good ol' 6 string, it's a really versatile instrument and works like a charm in every genre and song, especially for a more intimate, James Taylor-later Beatles-Rain Song vibe, but the 12 string sure gives the 6 a run for its money! It makes any song stand out just enough to make it even cooler! Like you said, the 12 string is like bacon, everything's better with it!!

Glad I found your channel! I'm a relatively new player, still just learning but appreciating the wonderful sounds I can make! I already treated myself to my first 2 12's - the same Taylor 150e and A Rickenbacker 330 12 - both sound awesome and are worth the extra effort to learn to play. Really pleased with my choices. I'm enjoying listening to you play.

Hey Charles. I cut out the part where I said that the only person that needs 5 is someone with a 12 sting RU-vid channel because I realized that I own about 15 6 stringers and for those that are exclusively 12 string slingers, 5 is 5 too few. Lol. Maybe if Vangoa and Harley Benton send me more I'll take a pic with them just to get close to your count. Lol. Thanks so much for checking out the video. Have a great day and take care. Mark

Ah, a southpaw. You have to be very intentional with your purchases. Even more impressive. I was always a minimalist. I toured in 2002 with a tele and a Taylor 410. We were a trio but the bass player had a guitar with him so I did have a backup. From 85 when I first started as a little kid until 2018 I owned maybe 8 guitars total. Something cracked in 2018 and I got gas full on. At least 30 guitars in the last 3 years. 🤯

Amazing video. Other "guitar comparison" authors could learn a lot from how you did this video. Brief, back and forth, continuous snippets of various songs, without much jabbering, and use of RU-vid chapters for easy navigation. On the negative side, you're hurting a lot of peoples wallets with how convincing this video is.

I’ve tried and given up too many times in the past. Because of your videos, I’m convinced that I need a 12 string. I’ve had a couple acoustic 12s that just weren’t good “players” (I’m blaming the guitars… hahaha). I’m giving it another go. Not giving up. Electric 12 in my future! Thanks, man! Great original, too!

Mark, thanks for the video! Gives a great comparison of the sound quality between the 6 and 12 strings. I think there are certainly some songs that feel more full/complete with the 12 string. I wonder how different "Crazy on You" would sound between a 6 string and a 12 string? Looking forward to your next video!
@8MinuteAxe
@8MinuteAxe 3 года назад
Hey Dennis. Thanks so much for checking out the video and supporting the channel. Interesting that you brought up Crazy on You. I was going to do Rick Beatos 20 Acoustic Intros on the 12. I started recording them one by one. Got to Crazy on You and couldnt get it up to performance quality and speed on the 12 so the plan was to take a few days and get it down. The next day the video idea didnt seem nearly as brilliant as it did the day before so I scrapped it. I didnt have the Taylor 12 at the time. I bet I could do it on the Taylor. I may give it a go. Have a great weekend and take care. Mark

Thank you very much for your comparison! They both sound great. It's impossible to say which is better, each is right for the purpose one wants to achieve. 6-string is more intimate, 12-string - more pathetic.

Using effects, Can you make six string sound similar to twelve string
@8MinuteAxe
@8MinuteAxe 3 года назад
I'm thinking about reaching out to a couple of the pedal companies to see of theu want me to test drive a 12 string simulator pedal. The effects on my two processors (one a high end dsp) suck. It's hard to reproduce the sound by just doubling and I'm not sure a dsp can just modulate half the strings. Maybe. Has anyone had any luck with getting a quality 1w string sound with a pedal. If so, email me or shoot a video and I'll put you on the channel. Thanks for the support! Mark

Wish you were here! No way on a 6 string! Great video. And you’re correct on hearing then recorded on a 12, then on a 6 isn’t really a fair comparison. A 12 always sounds so much fuller!

Thanks for the video! It's good to have both 6 and 12. 12 sounds more full, with real shimmering chorus and octaver effects. But for some songs it can be too much in the mix, so you need 6 as well. On a 6 string guitar is easier to play solos with deep bends. I have both)

If anyone needed convincing of why they need a 12-string this video will leave them in no doubt Mark! Amazing how much 'richer' the 12 string sound is, even though both guitars are top quality instruments.
@8MinuteAxe

Hey Phillip. When I finished the first cut of the video I actually had to kind of downplay the 12 and put a little mastering on the 6 because the disparity was so great. At times the 12 sounds like it has just the right amount of distortion on it. I checked and all levels are way below peak. If you want to hear unintended distortion on a 12 string, check out my very first 12 string video. It's terrible...but RU-vid has shown it to 350k people. DOH.

OK. Another great video. I'm convinced. One problem: It takes me at least 2 years to shop and buy an acoustic guitar. This gets to a major issue for anyone looking to buy their "first" instrument. In a way, though I've been playing steadily for 32 years, I would consider my purchase of a 12 string to be another "first" instrument. Back in the late 80's, Guitar Player magazine had their first iteration of "The Guitar Player Book", which had a pretty good section on how to buy certain instruments. Of course, the issue now is that so much of that is not relevant. Materials and construction have advanced significantly from when that book was published (I'm thinking early 80's), and there is a whole set of criteria that needs to be added to the checklist for buying a 12 string. How about a follow up video to this: "How to shop for a 12 String"...
