Hello atousa! I was very happy when you made this video because i was thinking too much of my own future and role right now, as a BS biotechnology graduate. I'm very interested in research but i had no way to get into it. I was in my 3rd year and i was thinking of even dropping out until a new professor came to our department. I have been very interested in his teaching style at first but then when i realised he was a cancer researcher i was very happy!!! Fast forward, i just graduated a month ago but im already with a full year experience in cancer research + I'm becoming a research assistant this August! A message to anyone who read this is to not ever give up. It took me a whole semester and a summer of me going up to my doctor and showing I'm ready for him to take me in. In conclusion, NEVER GIVE UP!!

I'm only 18 years old and I thought I needed to have a PhD in order to work on the research field... I really love it and I don't know what would I do if I can't spend my youngest years doing research. The thing is, I don't know if I have the intellectual capacity, creativity and mental toughness for it; I'm on my last year of high school and it's pretty easy for me but I know that it's not going to be like that once I step out of it, your video cleared and answered many questions I had!

Hello, Atousa from Malaysia, I just found out about your wonderful content here right before starting Year 1 in Biomedical Science at Newcastle University this September (I am attending at Malaysia Campus for the first 2 years of my BSc and will be completing my Year 3 in the UK in the future). My parents were concern about my current mental state and enrolled me into Biomed, they said I would be less burnt out than in Med School. At first, I was crushed emotionally as I always wanted to help others and I thought studying Medicine and being a doctor was the way. I literally found hidden gems in Biomed and research by watching your videos and have a Zoom call with my future Year 1 Biomedical Science Classmates. Just want to tell you I cannot express enough how thankful I am for finding your videos as I was quite beat up for starting Biomed instead of Medicine, now I think Biomed will be my new calling in life. Thank you, Atousa. I have some questions for you and I hope you will be kind enough to take some time to answer them. One, out of all specialisations in Biomedical Science what was the thing that made you chose Cancer out of other areas (ie Infectious Disease, Immunology, etc.)? Two, What were the Optional Modules you took during your Year 3 of BSc in Newcastle? I hope you could share some of your Year 3 journey and give some advice. Regards Yen Chi

I have a bs in biological engineering and there's no career trajectory in the bioprocess R&D biopharma field. I don't want to be in the lab for the rest of my life when I'm more capable than a lot of people with more education 🙃 I suggest getting the phd if you want a path upwards in R&D or get an engineering BS degree and make the same/more money with more opportunity for career growth

Excellent video! I also considered to start a PhD, but finally decided to get a job in the industry as a researcher and then see what I do. If you are not completely convinced to do it, it is better not to start I think. I agree that experience is as important as titles in a lot of places. BTW. I see you have a book of Dalí behind you, I am from Figueres, Dali's native city :)

I tried everywhere here and was offered a job (but it was taken from me before I started). I can vouch for getting work experience, I lost out on a PhD at Liverpool Uni due to having no work experience. Now I am doing a part-time MSc whilst caring for my grandad. It's tough going but hopefully will be worth it when I get a place on a PhD. I wasn't diagnosed with a learning disability (I recently found out that I got dyslexia and dysgraphia) but until I was in my 20's I wasn't even diagnosed with the dyspraxia. My marks are still poor when it comes to exams, but otherwise I get good marks. For an OU course I did on the senses, I was getting 65% + in all my assignments, but I couldn't finish the exam due to having a splitting head and was feeling sick. (It was the difficulty / disability). Sorry I am still miffed as I have missed out a lot on work experience due to not getting top marks. I barely scrape 40% in exams now, with over 20% increase in coursework. :(

Aww I'm sorry that happened to you, it does sound very tough. I really really hope it works out for you for the best!! I can't imagine how frustrating that must have been for you, being miffed is completely understandable! I really hope that your MSc ventures go well for you though, and I wish you all the very best with it!

Great video and loving the content! Keep it up! I’d love to know your take on pursuing a masters in biomedicine after a B.Sc in biology in regards to employability?
@atousa5752
@atousa5752 6 лет назад
Aw I'm glad you're enjoying it! :) the short answer is that it does make you more employable in the sense that you get lots more experience and having extra qualifications in this field helps! having said that, I made a video talking to my friend about her experience of doing an industrial placement year, and I think experience is sometimes more important than the qualification alone! I hope this helps :)

Wonderful video and OMG! i was waiting for this kind of video. Very excellently explained. I wanted to know if while writing a grant will a PhD be preferred or MBBS. I feel for modern day research and academic positions a PhD is a must.
@atousa5752
@atousa5752 6 лет назад
hehe sorry to keep you waiting!! I think you are right, I think a PhD is definitely useful if you want to drive your own individual research project, and you're definitely right in saying that a lot of high up academic positions need a PhD, but it's useful to know that people who aren't super academic, but still do enjoy research can contribute too! Personally I want to pursue the MBBS route because I want to work with patients, but I would love to do a PhD too ... you know, lots of fingers in lots of pies haha

Hi Atousa, hope you are well! Just wanted to ask if you want to become a research technician, do I need do go to an IBMS accredited uni and does it have to be HCPC approved? If so and the university does not have these, what process would I have to go through? Also, do you recommend doing a placement year, and a masters, or do you think that masters are just enough? Sorry, I've got so many qs, I just haven't found anyone who could answer them. Thank you :)

I intend to pursue a PhD in the UK after my Master's degree at Aston. What advice would you give regarding approaching labs, PIs and applications? How would you rate the research culture in the UK in general, and especially with respect to the overall development of the student?

Hello , well done this video is so informative I felt asif I'm in the lab while you where talking . Now I'm a masters student I'm studying genomics and health and I aspire to continue PhD I'd like to ask you about the scholarships in UK it will be so nice to make a video about that with some details
@atousa5752
@atousa5752 6 лет назад
Hello and that's so amazing to hear! I'm glad :) To be perfectly honest with you, I don't know much about scholarships because as a UK resident, you mostly apply to a PhD in the same way you would apply to a job and funding often comes with it. If I find out more about this, then I will make a video about it :)

Hello Atousa. I have been following the content of your channel for quite some time now and have really liked your videos. Particularly those in the Day in the Life of a Researcher series and the phlebotomy video. I have referred your channel to a friend of mine who will be starting out on an MRes in Translational Cancer Medicine at King's College London this September. I have also dropped a DM on Instagram in this regard. Request you to kindly have a look. (Username: theperennialwanderer) I'd be delighted if you could give me some pointers for my friend. As always, a great video. Entertaining and informative at the same time. Makes the lives of people like us in the life sciences sound so much more interesting and impressive. (I've completed my undergrad in Biotechnology and will be starting out on my MSc in Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine at Aston University, Birmingham this September.) Keep up the good work. Wish you the very best. :)
