I also had the 116 installed this year. Agree with all the positives and negatives that you express. I have one more negative that you probably won’t experience. That is cold weather starting. Under 50 degrees it takes more effort to start. Once it starts it’s good. I have a tuner from Fuel moto and their map is much better than factory tune but like you want a personal dyno tune.

I agree with this comment. I have an 18 Springfield darkhorse, in winter or cold weather I really have to warm her up before I ride. Once warm she's fine.

Happy with my 111. Zero to 70 mph is plenty fast for me and roll on from even 5th gear is nothing to sneeze at. I've had faster bikes, but to me the Indian cruiser is not about speed or power. For me not worth 4k to go faster. Enjoy spinning your tire and Zero to 85 in 3.5 seconds while I'll just sit back and cruise my wimpy 111.

I actually passed on a 116 Darkhorse Roadmaster for a 111 Roadmaster for the less heat. I felt minimal at best performance difference between the two. I'm sticking with stage zero, cat, and stock pipes. I'm getting 52 mpg and loving it. I don't have any issue on highway right up to triple digit speeds. I really can't comprehend the difference you claim, but am happy for you. Thanks for sharing.

You always want more power, i have a triumph rocket 3 and i want to sent it to carpenter racing and get the 240 rear wheel horsepower kit installed. Do not need it but would like it. Nice bike by the way.

FYI Lloyd is the person that started big bore for Victory and Indian. His components are bullet proof. Yes I'm a Lloydz fan boy. I've known him since the start of his Victory kits. I had a business doing Victory customizing and did plenty of his big bore kits. Not one single kit had problems or failure. Granted they didn't come with the Victory warranty.

SO I really thought about doing the 121 with him but it would have cost me almost another $2k and since they don't really show much interest in working with small RU-vidrs like me i decided to stay with Indian's kit. The other issue is was how long the bike would be down. minimum 2 weeks...probably more like 4 and i would have had to take the bike to them. Big hassle. Would love to have one, just wasnt in the cards.

diamondrmp nah man, I’m not saying that at all. I never asked them for anything either, I just weighed my options and for all the reasons above decided on Indian. BTW, nobody has ever comp’d me for anything on my bike, don’t expect it but it sure as hell would be nice. :D I guess my point was I’m not some big RU-vidr that gets shit thrown at his doorstep for free and I don’t go knocking on doors to get it. That’s all. Hope you don’t get the wrong impression.

Hello from Michigan, and an excellent review. That's my plan as well next year. I had the stage 2 kit installed on my 2019 Chieftain, but want more power. Like you, sticking with original factory parts for warranty purposes is important. I also joined the 10k club (referring to your 10k review video).

Welcome to 116 Big Bore club. I agree with everything you said. My tune with the 116bb kit got me 100hp, and 118tq. While going by Charlotte on my Coast2Coast2CoastTrip2Sturgis (still on this trip), I had them put in the 585 Cams. He tuned it to 105hp and 128tq. In the dead heat of summer. We think there is more in there but the summer heat was working against us. Needless to say, I'm pleased. It's a better tune now.

RVS performance is out here in Minnesota..Ryan is a kick ass dude!! I have meet him and he let me play with his dyno with the Challenger.. anyways RVS performance is great!!

Apparently now the 2020 bikes BBK comes with the high flow heads of the factory 116. So my understanding is that a stage 3 kit for a 111 takes you to the same endpoint as a stage 2 kit for a factory 116. Not sure if that’s accurate, but I heard that they did this because the 2020 111 got updates like connecting rods. Anyway, I don’t know which I want to start with. Haven’t picked my bike yet. I’ve heard the stock 111 is a real peach with fantastic off-idle torque, and like you said a stage 2 can be all you really need. But starting with the factory 116 is I believe already one step above a 111 stage 2, but below a stage 3. I just really want to avoid the tuning issues you have described.

You are pretty much spot on with you assessment. The factory 116 is a far better starting point though because all you need to add is the cam/throttle body kit and you’re there. As far as the tuning “issues” go, those are my issues, LOL, the bike is fine without a tune but I don’t like fine, I like better. Hehe, always on the search for perfection. In the end I think you want a tune no matter which direction you go but it sounds like you got this figured out and trust me, you’re gonna be quite happy 😁😁😁😁🙏🙏😎

Once it is properly tuned, that heat should be less of an issue. The software on the flash tuner has a setting to adjust the throttle also. There is another option you can do a remote tuning session. That is as close as you get to a dyno tune and in some respects may be a better tune because its more of a real world environment tune. vs a perfect environment in a dyno.

I got the 116 on my 2017 Chief and I love. Don’t bother with stage 2. I did have mine dynoed. I got 102 hp and 121 for torque. Come March I get Lloyd’s 885 cams or Hanson’s racing cams and dynoed again hoping I’ll get a few more ponies. Well it’s March, went to Daytona didn’t put any cams in. I was told for the amount of money invested per HP wouldn’t be worth it. I did have it dynoed again 110 hp 132 tq. Now anyone looking for big gains without spending big bucks. The above mentioned cams will get you in the 90hp range for a fraction of the cost of the BBK. It will shock you. I went with the stage 2 and wasn’t impressed at all. Just my two cents.

One of the main reasons I don't have an Indian is that I felt the TS111 is a boring motorcycle engine, It just felt flat and gutt-less.... and holy s**t!! the heat 🤬 That 116 of yours is anything but flat and gutt-less 👍 Challenger has peaked my interest, it could be a replacement for my Victory in few years.

Hey Brian, I agree with you about the power from a stock 111 to the 116 it is a big difference. I installed my big bore kit about a year ago and I love it , i had it dyno turned with a pv3 by indian of Charlotte at daytona bike week and after 2 1/2 hours and $400.00 later my bike has 113 whp and 137 pounds of torque to the wheel. I am pretty happy with it. But on the downside every now and then i get the check engine light with a rear cyllinder misfire and my dealer indian of lakeland can't figure out what is the problem 🤔 but other then that I love my big bore kit . Ride safe.

I’m glad you’re loving your 116. I would love to install it on my chieftain. I currently am running Lloydz 558 cams. They are significantly less expensive then the big bore. They have very good power numbers. Lloyd Dyno tuned it to 100hp 114 torque. You should do road trip up to Charlotte Indian and get that dyno tune done. Generic tunes can get it close, but a good dyno tune is well worth it.

Thanks for the video. I have the’19 Vintage added Freedom true dual exhaust. I noticed that the throttle was more twitchy in sport mode afterwards it’s a little cooler where it needs to be though😎

oh man, what an impressive and great video again Bryan! Finally real live experiences and real recommendations for a BBK! After watching this video I will forget my plan with just the stage 2 cams and will save money until I can effort a BBK. I am here the "Springfield Daddy", having mine since 2016, when the Springfield was launched. Will invest further on into that great bike. Decided not to think anymore for the Challenger, love my bike too much. Unfortunately a pretty complex thing to get a BBK approved here in Germany. All manufacturer stage kits are not allowed being offered from the manufacturers. Will probably cost me here around 7.000 € and a friendly TÜV-Auditor....huge amount of money :-(....But if it's worth it!? We don't live twice :-)

Honestly, I like my Springfield better Than the Challenger. Not a fan of the Challenger seat, not comfortable for me. The Springy is just perfect for me, I see know reason to change now because the 116 has made the bike even better. Enjoy!

@@MuellerMarc Hi Oliver, let me gimme you here briefly some answers, for detailed contact to me have a look at the Indian Facebook site in Germany, ( Indian Motocycle Owners Germany) where you will find me and we can go in direct contact. Fortunately my bike is from 2016, so still EURO 3, that means, I can probably legally install that BBK with TÜV and registered performance improvement in the papers for the insurance. From 2017 on, all over Europe, every factory performance stage kits are unfortunately not allowed anymore. All manufacturers had to take out of their program such upgrades. So, if you have an EURO 4 Indian, from 2017 or younger, it will be difficult for you, if you want 100% compliance :-). As a rough calculation you should be prepared for around 5.000,- € including ca. 1.000 € installation cost and import and shipping. Best Regards, Björn

I just purchased a 2016 springfield 111 and a 2022 116 road master darkhorse and I am from Jax Fl. I wish thank you for video as I'm look to do a stage 3 kit on the springfield and a custom build to give it a 5o Era look. My 111 is red so tan seats and Whitewall tires and fishtail exhaust tips are in the works.

If you haven’t found someone to tune your bike you might check with car garages that do a lot of LS engine swaps they have to retune those and I think can recal bikes as well . I like the handle bars , are they new ? I don’t remember seeing them on your iron butt videos. I’m going to order me a tee shirt and send something in the mail to you the start of next week. The bike sounds good (almost as good as a Harley) 😬👌🏻

I have a 2019 chieftain dark horse. After I did stage 1 I was in between stages 2 and 3. This is the thing. 2019 with ride modes is more than enough even with the stock. I decided to go with stage 2 with PV3 tuned from Fuel Moto. Working with the guy remotely at Fuel Moto and the bike feels great. I already got 2 speeding tickets 😅. I know stage 3 has more power. But the question is, where and when I will need this extra power? I think stage 2 and if I put the bike in sport mode I have already tons of power.

I totally agree, stage 2 pretty much is about all anyone needs especially if you have a 2019 with ride modes. But I can’t deny the power from the 116 is other world power.

Broman and The Squaw I used to ride Harleys in the past few years. All I can say, my bank account was always dry because the mods and accessories were never end. I promised myself when I got to the Indian word to be wiser and control what I am spending. The good thing about Indian and the bad as well, there is not high-quality aftermarket parts. This is good for me because it controls my spending way better than Harley.

Just making a plug for Dobeck tuners: Tell them what you have, and they send a unit preset for your bike. Though they are easy to set, I didn’t have to touch mine, just installed it on my 2015 RM, and the difference was amazing. Note, they do not lean the mix, only make it richer at the power bands where you need it.

Indian has a stage 4??? I know Lloydz has a 126, haven’t seen anything else from Indian though. I cannot even fathom that much torque. I heard the Lloydz 126 is about 140 fp. That’s plenty for me.

From what I hear everyone say ( for whatever that is worth) they would have to prove the tune was the reason for the failure. Like if someone tuned it to only run at 7k rpm. Or super lean and you burn it up.

Not sure if it’s available as a 116 from the factory on the classic although keep in mind the BBK upgrade does have more power than a stock 116. When you buy the BBK it comes with cams and a larger throttle body that is not included in the stock 116. Although those options are also available as upgrade.

I have just the stage 1 exhaust and intake on my 2019 Indigenous Person Springfield, rumbles nice, pulls great, and I can still get 48-52 MPG if I just cruise easy. I'm thinking I'm good for now.

5 1/2 MAYBE 6 seconds to get to 60. 8 1/2 maybe just a few milliseconds before 9 to get to 80. Very very impressive! 16:16

I'm happy with my 111, but will be going with stage 2 next year, will be interesting to see what a custom tune will do to yours, like the colour Ts when will they be available?

Help please. I have a 2016 Chief classic. Stage 1 then, decatted and installed Indian stage 2 at the dealership. I like the sound the power / torque. But I now have a clak at 2500 rpm that is driving me nuts. They dyno tuned at the dealer. I am willing to do anything to get rid of the clak. I am concerned that going to stage 3 will just give me a new set problems. No-one told me about the possibility of the clacking, What do you think? thanks

Hey Curt, there are many theories about this but i think the definitive consenus is that the valve springs on the older models are weaker and the increased lift on the cams is causing the clack. The weaker springs are a well known condition (I wont say "issue") of the older models and I truly SHOCKED the dealer did not tell you that a valve spring job was required to do the Cams on your bike. As far as a solution goes you're going to have to weigh the cost difference between a BBK and valve spring replace. Either way the heads are coming off. PLEASE do not take my word for all of this. Do some research, I'm just going by what Ive heard. The "Indian Motorcycle Tech" group on FB is a great place to start. Helpful yet sarcastic group that they are. LOL. Good luck! All is not lost. (BTW, many say the tune can rectify this problem as well but I'm dubious).

Honestly it’s the best thing I’ve done for the bike. There is no greater improvement or upgrade that I’ve done that has provided me with more benefit. I wouldn’t have a TS model without these upgrades.

It’s a very big difference…Stage 2 is the best value for gains but the BBK feels like an exponential step up. Additionally if you feel like eventually you will do the BBK, you would be wasting money on the S2. Ask me how I know LOL

I bought a 2017 dark horse with the 116. Did you have any problems with backfiring though the breather in till it has warmed up

There is no BBK for the Challenger, yet. At least not through Indian. I hear some aftermarket outfit is doing a BBK but it’s very new. I’ll wait for Indian to put one out. Good question though.

Its a maximum drop of about 2mpg. and I am riding it hard so YMMV. Used to average 41 now I'm at 39mpg. Not important for the average ride (

Right now I average about 38mpg but that was never a concern for me. I mean let’s face it, even 4 mpg dip would be less than 12 miles per tank or about a $1.15 if my math is right.

Riding with shorts? Do you have problem with alligators down there?..lol.. Ok a couple of questions.. in 2018, The Stage 2 took the 111 to 116 right? Now for the 2019 and later factory 116 models.. they don't have the performance cam that a the available 2018 stage 2 kit had, does it? Did you have to modify your kick stand for either bike to enable reach? I'm about 29" inseam and I could just barely reach it to pull in on a 2018 Chieftain. I have a 2004 Honda Rune, and not it does have a jerky throttle compared to my 2014 Yamaha Stratoliner. I don't prefer a crisp or jumpy throttle..it requires more or too much concentration and wrist action.

Stage 2 for the 2018 is upgraded cams only. Stage 3 is the BBK and on a 2018 it includes a far more aggressive cam set, larger throttle body and high compression pistons and a couple other things I can’t recall ATM. REMEMBER, the cams for the BBK are pretty stout, requires more lift and duration for larger pistons.

The stock rods are not stout enough to support the change in compression ratio and piston size.

Ok so fwiw the 116 was not available when I bought my bike. Also, the BBK makes more power than a factory 116 so choose wisely.

The new chief is lighter too so my 111 with stage 2 cams and tune feels almost too powerful as is. I’ve counted the number of times I’ve actually managed to redline it. Torque hits like a sledgehammer. But you know we all have that itch to want more and more !

If I were to get an engine upgrade to my 111, I would get the 126, so why waste money on the 116. But you are from floriduh so.

There are legitimate reasons to NOT get a 126 including warranty, service and the reality of long warm up periods and other concerns that surround the 126. Living in “Floriduh” as you say is not convenient for getting a 126 installed or serviced if there was a problem. You do what works for you, I’ll do what works for me but a brilliant man such as yourself already knows all this.
