Thanks for this demo. I agree that new brass needs to be resized. I recently bought a bag of Armscor 357 mag. About 15% of the cases would not fit in the shell holder due to the thickness of the case head. This problem made these cases unusable. Have you had this problem as well?

Jesse, thanks for the video. I have not been resizing my new .44 Mag or .38 Spl/.357Mag brass. I will have to keep an eye on that. I just loaded some .44 Mags this past week, will pull some out and check if the COL has moved since reloading/crimping, if it did it is not noticeable with the naked eye, but the caliper will tell the story. Thanks for sharing.

Haven't had any issues like this with my Starline .44 mag or .44 Special brass. I'm also using the Lee dies and factory crimp die. I did do some checks of the new brass dimensions before loading them however. Will have to keep an eye on this with other new brass I pick up.

@@jesseboutdoorsreloading plus always remember that .45 Colt brass can oftentimes be split at the mouth after many reloadings and belling…generous trimming can make it useable again…I save and give it to my CAS family who shoot Cowboy Special…I do the same when I run across mildly split .44 mag brass for .44 Russian or .44 Special reloadable brass…gotta look out for our brothers and sisters ☺️☺️☺️

I have a particular old carbide die for 45 Colt...original true 45 Colt. I use it for all my new brass in 45 S&W and Colt cases as the ring barely sizes the cases. Since it's truer to size than modern die/bullet combos it may not size fired cases small enough to fit in some chambers though. One example would be my son's Schofield which has very generous chambers. I also have some conversion cylinders that have very tight chambers, but new brass will fit them after going through that die, but not if fired in oversized chambers and sized in it.

Interesting, I was just reloading using new starline 357 brass, almost skipped the resizing step but did it anyway, from the force necessary to run the ram I knew something was happening! but i wish I held back a couple as exemplars just in case.. .I've heard that a hot load that is difficult to eject from cylinder is a high pressure warning sign, I've gotten 3 of those the last month, one I can feel a bulge above the case head (web area?)

Is that the Lee factory carbide crimp die that keep having the issue? You had this problem before and changed crimp dies and it then did not have the issue.
@jesseboutdoorsreloading
@jesseboutdoorsreloading 4 месяца назад
This issue happens with any factory crimp die I’ve used on new brass. A non size case doesn’t have the neck tension it needs. I’ve had the issue a few years ago with Winchester new 9mm when I first started reloading. This die works with 45acp and plated or fmj in 45 Cowboy special.

I agree that you have to watch the sizing on new brass. Neck tension is very important. But I have to defend the chamber checkers. And also max case gauges. They are not meant to catch what you were trying to catch. ( I know you know this but for anybody that does not) The chamber checker does just that, It makes sure that the round will fit into your chamber. The max case gauge is the same but gives you some other information but still..... It's checking maximum parameters. But there's a caviot. Sometimes your chamber and the checker or gauge won't agree. That is more of a gun specific issue in my opinion. I use the max case gauge the most. After sizing I check, This will instantly tell me if my brass is too long and if i'm ready to load without problems. I can't stand loading ammunition and then finding out the rim hangs up or something like a lower case bulge. Then when I am done with my entire process.They all go through the max case gauge again, Or a chamber checker at least. If I diligently follow this procedure.I do not waste many components and my rounds always chamber in my guns. I separately test neck tension throughout the process. Usually you can feel it but you should also test it by applying pressure to your finished product. Bullet set back is real, You don't want it. If I do complete progressive reloading, I always have a batch of wacky ones. And that really irritates me because things are expensive. Thanks for the video Jessie! 👍

My main thing is the barrel is a better gauge than the ammo checkers. To me it’s a waist of money. Thanks for your comment and watching 👍🇺🇸

@@jesseboutdoorsreloading But you did not even try and drop that bad round into your barrel. Bad example anyway as far as barrel vs checker.
@jesseboutdoorsreloading
@jesseboutdoorsreloading 4 месяца назад
@@thetexasrat on a revolver you use the cylinder. There’s no difference between the cylinder and the ammo checker. You’re not making the OAL long to jam it in the rifling like a semi auto.
@theturkeysopinion
@theturkeysopinion 4 месяца назад
@@jesseboutdoorsreloading Respectfully I have to retort. Not all cylinders and chambers are sized the same. What may work in one may not work in another. The max case gauge, And for the most part the chamber checker are checking for max tolerance. I cannot see how any tool to do quality control on your own ammunition would be a waste of time or money. If it won't fit the gauge it probably won't fit the gun. And as I said max case gauge, Which is different than a chamber checker will give you even more information including a very quick way to know if you need to trim your brass after resizing. It helps you to cull out the bad brass before you reload it saving you time frustration and money. Sure you can use your barrel or your cylinder. But what about rifle cartridges? Like 223/308 and such. Are you going to cycle every one of them through the gun? Maybe I'm missing something here🤷‍♂️
@jesseboutdoorsreloading
@jesseboutdoorsreloading 4 месяца назад
Sorry I deleted my last comment cause I typed the wrong thing. I don’t like ammo checkers for semi automatic pistols. I think your barrel tells you more by doing a plunk test. A case/chamber gauge for rifle is a different story. It gives you way my information than an ammo checker. I do think that case/chamber gauges for rifles are good. Now once again Turkey I’ve always liked your channel 👍

WARNING: Pressure in the 45 ACP is far greater than that of the 45 Colt pistols. Not good to use 45 Auto data with cartridges to be use in 45 Colt guns. 45 ACP max pressure 21,000 psi 45 Colt max pressure 14,000 psi/14,000 CUP [disclaimer: every thing here below is for educational use only!] CAUTION: If one proceeds in this endeavor they should get the most helpful "Midway USA LoadMap 45 ACP" in order to be able to choose a safe powder charge to consider. As some starting charges are well over the 14000 PSI of the 45 Colt. See the Alliant Bullseye load data on page 70, in the USA LoadMap 45 ACP, to see just what could happen if one simply willy nillingly picks out any old 45 Auto load data and tries it out in the Cowboy 45 Special cartridges, as this starting load is way over safe working pressures of the 45 Colt. Also never go anywhere near the medium charge weight load data, as many of the medium charge weights for the 45 Auto are above the 14,000 psi of the 45 Colt gun's working pressure too. And keep in mind that any load near the 14,000 psi range would defeat the whole reason behind the Cowboy 45 Special case for shooting light loads! And while the 45 Auto Rim and Cowboy 45 Special are just a few thousandths of an inch different in length and diameter the 45 Auto Rim's maximum rating of 15,000 CUP [lower than the that of the 45 Auto] is still higher than that of the 45 Colt, so while the starting loads for the 45 Auto Rim can be used in the Cowboy 45 Special cases, the maximum 45 Auto Rim loads will still generate unsafe pressures. Always start low and work up with caution. And keep in mind you should be shooting for a light load in the first place. But why play around with fire? Below are proven safe and effective load data for the Cowboy 45 Special cartridge. [again: this is for educational use only!] Yes Actual Cowboy 45 Special load data can be found in the 17th edition of "Cartridges Of The World", page 486: And on these notes I hope y'all have a blast! The Good kind that is.
