So. Whether you like it or not, when you say the word G-I-F, especially on the internet, people are gonna talk about it. Some will correct you, some will correct the people correcting you, it’s the same conversation every time. Over and over and over. Which is why Mike proposed a third pronunciation way back when: Zhaif, or in the IPA: ʒaɪf. Because if you can’t beat them, leave town and set up camp in the wilderness. But really though, what is it about this one word that has people up in arms about the “right” way to pronounce it? There are plenty of other words that have differing pronunciations across cultures, borders and languages. So why is GIF the word people go to war for? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

the easiest solution to this problem is obviously to just say "Graphics Interchange Format" each and every time
@JamesR624
@JamesR624 8 лет назад
True. People say "text file", "T X T file" or "text document". They don't say "tickst". People say "Portable Network Graphics" or "P N G". They don't say "ping". People say "bitmap". They don't say "bump". People say "HTML". They don't say "Hitimal". The GIF argument is really ridiculous because nobody does this shit with almost any other filetype.

Ok, to be clear, I actually do a lot of the things you describe here, but I pronounce these the wrong way on purpose to be funny or otherwise slightly annoy people. I'm starting to wonder if that makes me a bad person, or just playful. Maybe both?
@oowaz
@oowaz 8 лет назад
people don't say those because it's either unnecessary or sounds bad. most people call image files pictures or photos, text files documents, but what else would you call a gif? that's why the controversy, it just happens to be the only format popular enough to cause that kind of confusion.
@kered13

I say "ping". I don't know why anyone wouldn't, it's a lot shorter than "P-N-G" and the only really obvious pronunciation.

The whole of my response to any .gif pronunciation debate of is currently to simply tell people that .webm is the superior format, and refer to gifs as "poorly formatted webms." I like to counter one form of pedantry with another (possibly slightly more relevant) one.
@brianshrode72
@brianshrode72 8 лет назад
How are you supposed to pronounce webm? "Webbum?"
@JeoshuaCollins
@JeoshuaCollins 8 лет назад
I would argue that the webm format isn't as ripe for controversy in the realm of pronunciation as something with an ambiguous hard/soft G question in it. I mean, webm is quite clearly pronounced "web 'em". The only possible argument is on whether or not you inject an /e/ or a /ə/ or pronounce the 'm' syllabically or not. Either way, it doesn't translate as an internet argument, because em is em, and m is em, no matter how it ends up sounding.

English is so messed up. I learned French in school which still has some odd rules from it's Romantic background, but at least the conjugation is almost always consistent. I also learned some Japanese, and I love how formulaic and consistent it is. I could conjugate all sorts of verbs I didn't even know what they meant because they all conjugate the same :) English is a goofball language, but I'm a goofball.... so maybe that works?
@MahlenMorris
@MahlenMorris 8 лет назад
I suspect that the vehemence of the argument is because when you first hear someone say it, you think, "Oh, it's just an honest mistake that anyone could make, I'll help them out." But, because the decision is so arbitrary, people don't feel like they are wrong, so they double down, and then you do, and then, well...here we are. I just found out that there's even a name for this, Sayre's Law: "In any dispute the intensity of feeling is inversely proportional to the value of the issues at stake." That's like Internet discussions in a nutshell.

The debate between 'GIF' and 'JIF' is silly to me. It's like how the GNOME desktop environment is supposed to be pronounced 'Guh-Nome.' I just don't care. Also, this debate reminds me of when I was a kid and I first started reading Harry Potter. I had never heard the name Hermione and consequently, I read the name in my head as 'Herm-eye-own". I was 9 when I first read Harry Potter and realized that all the kids at school had their own pronunciation for her name... and we would get into arguments about it. It wasn't until the movie came out that a consensus was reached--however, to me, she'll always be Herm-eye-own. There was one kid who contended that her name was Herm-ee-one because it reminded him of Obi-wan. I guess the point of this anecdote is to illustrate my position that language is completely arbitrary.

And what about Mate, the DE? Good thing I was reading about that one and saw it's mah-tay, like the tea, before I said it to someone and looked silly. Funny thing though, I was talking to someone about Spacemacs, the plugin suite for emacs and someone said "so you pronounce it space macs?" That's what it said on the site. In my opinion, it's based on how "GI" is pronounced in your native language and how familiar you are with words that contain "GI". So, you can both speak the same language but maybe you're more familiar with some words than others and that makes you lean towards a specific type of pronounciation.

Most the time I pronounce it with a hard G, "Jif", because it's less likely to get confused with gift, and it just feels more natural to me and my tongue. Then again, the way I say GIF may get confused with "Jeff". But who really cares (apparently everyone, for some odd reason). What *I think* we should argue over, is how to pronounce/spell the plural for oc-top-o-des! (that's the Greek plural for Octopus, and the word comes from Greek, look it up).

Brazilian Portuguese never uses an "h" sound for g. The "gifi" thing isn't really a pronunciation difference, but Portuguese tends to end words in vowel sounds, so Brazilians have a natural tendency to do that with foreign words, like "hot-i dog-i"
@225Perfect
@225Perfect 8 лет назад
The reason I believe that there is a controversy here, because all of the pronunciations are self derived. Before the internet, there was no such thing as a GIF, and it existed as an acronym without a pronunciation. The interesting concept here, to me, is the idea that a word could exist and convey meaning without any accompanying vocalizations. Regardless of how you say it, we all know what it means, like the symbol that represented Prince.

I'm Dutch, and I doubt anyone would say 'HIF', since it sounds EXACTLY like how we pronounce HIV (we don't say the abbreviation, just as if it was a word, like 'laser'. Also interesting to me is that Dutch people prefer the English hard /g/ sound. Because it doesn't exist in Dutch at all, except in the English loan word 'goal'. Most people speak English, plus the /k/ exists in Dutch, but it's still funny that a nonnative sound wins over a native pronunciation.

I mean he literally said not to pronounce GIF as GIF, which admits that GIF is pronounced as G-I-F. 2: if you read the word GIF in almost any other language other than English it will come out closer to or exactly like G-I-F, in English it comes out as J-I-F for some people. Whenever people go on about pronunciation, I simply say "clearly you know what I meant enough to comment on it, so the point came across." If a word is widely spoken enough to where one is able to ascertain the desired meaning from it, the pronunciation becomes irrelevant. We all know toe-mah-toe means the same thing in spoken language as toe-may-toe because they are both widely spoken and it is understood. It seems even making any attempt at saying one is better than the other is a self-defeating argument because of this. :)

no 'h' sound at all for the 'g' in portuguese. The letter 'g' in Portuguese sounds hard if it precedes 'a', 'o' and 'u', and sounds soft before 'e' and 'i'. We usually say gif with a hard 'g' because we assume it's a foreign word and not because our language structure. another interesting thing about how the 'g' sounds in Portuguese is how you can emulate hard g before 'e' or 'i': you basically add the letter 'u' in between. With that said, semantically gif should sound exclusively as jif in Portuguese, but we use the 'guif' (gif with a hard g) sound generally.

5:20 What?! That is not the beauty of language, the arbitrary nature of language is the most chaotic and therefor the most horrible thing about it. You can't just go by "What does it matter if we can understand each other just fine?", language is a system and every system needs to have rules to govern it, otherwise it is pointless. Ordnung muss sein.
@dianan502000
@dianan502000 8 лет назад
I disagree with you. The thing is English as a language has borrowed so much from other languages that the rules that govern it, don't necessarily ring true for most words. Look at I before E except after C, common words like species, weird, science, their, and eight. I feel that language is more about communication. A set of rules is agreed upon and then broken or altered depending on the community that uses it. Look at the way the Internet approaches grammar where the casUAL CASCADE OF WORDS incites volume in a place where there is no sound or intentional misspellings of words like sweety into sweaty relay sarcasm to take the place of tone. I don't believe that the stance "as long as we understand each other" is pointless if we approach language and the rules that govern it as a starting point not an end point.
@swng314
@swng314 8 лет назад
People change, no set of static rules can govern it successfully. Language is defined by usage.
@vsm1456
@vsm1456 7 лет назад
Even if it needs to have rules to govern, it doesn't work like this, people say the way they say, and that's it. Linguistics as a science doesn't govern anything, it studies. And this is not only in English, it's in every language out there unless government wants to force changes to language in an unnatural way.
@TheMrVengeance
@TheMrVengeance 6 лет назад
+Diana N - The fact that not all rules of a language work for 100% of the cases within that language, doesn't mean a language doesn't and/or shouldn't have rules. The argument _"as long as we understand each other"_ isn't an argument for a language, its an argument for a pidgin. When you start adding structure and vocabulary to that pidgin it starts becoming a creole. And with widespread usage, grammar and rules, that creole can grow into an actual proper language. If you're arguing "no rules!", "only usage, nothing else matters" and "as long as we understand each other" you're arguing for a devolution of language back to its embryonic stage.

This argument is stupid. Kleenex may be used for something that is made by Puffs, but that doesn't change the way you say the word. The argument at 10:14 is that it doesn't matter as long as people know what you are talking about. You'd be laughed at if you said you prague-grammed in Rubby on Rah-ills and were oozing the Pro-Fits to buy a Shay-Vye Ma-Lye-Ba. This is different than saying that Indiana folk are wrong for Runnin' Jumpin' and Swimmin' with a silent G, because those are not Named Entities with specified brands. English Divergence due to regionalization is not the same as calling a named entity something other than what it is. Try calling your girlfriend by an alternate pronunciation of her name and see how far that gets you in life.

The real problem is that very infrequently do people specify that they are talking about 'animated' GIFs. GIF was a format long before the animated version was created, and there is a big differnce between a GIF and an animated GIF! Seriously though: the animated GIF was never intended to function as such a prolific means of distributing animated content. It's one of the least efficient ways of transmitting video content in existence. It was meant for creating low-fi spinning globes and glowing lines on webpages, not for snippets of movies and television shows. So rather than worrying about how to pronounce it, we should be figuring out how to stop using it.

As someone studying linguistics I loved this video! I think the unique thing about GIFs is that unlike JPEGs or .EXE files which could be simply called "pictures" or just the name of the program respectively, there is nothing else to call a GIF. And because the signified is something that originates from the internet where you're not hearing someone directly talk about and point to a real-world object, the confusion in pronunciation was bound to arise. Part of me also wonders if much of the anger that arises from the debate stems from the fact that "GIF" is relatively short and simple compared to the larger words that fill internet users' lexicons. That their fellow interneteers are unable to pronounce the three-letter "GIF" correctly must make users crazy.
