Shadow: Name one word that starts with "G" that's pronounced like "J", Sonic. Sonic: Generations. That way between them then vocally make the direct reference, but the dialogue still makes sense :p.
@@GrosvnerMcaffreyagain cause of the point--it's not consistent. The english language allows you to change how syllables, down to the letters, are spoken depending on the word.
I never knew "scuba" was an acronym until just now. Apparently, it is. I just looked it up. It stands for "Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus."
They’re actually both right: 1. Sonic’s logic holds true because the P in JPEG can’t be an F without its partner H. Shadow also shows that a letter’s position can change its pronunciation in many cases (excepting the fact that English has many diverse dialects), hence U for Underwater vs Scuba and E for Emission vs Laser. 2. G generally can’t sound like J without being followed by an I, Y, or E (thanks, France). Because GIF has one of these combinations when pronounced as its own word, Steve Wilhite is correct in saying that’s the most proper pronunciation. HOWEVER, English pronunciation rules are not always set in stone because this is the most inconsistent and loanword-filled language in history and therefore we still have notable exceptions, hence “Gynecology” (thanks, Greece), “Gears” (thank you, Scandinavia) and “Gift.” (thanks, other Germanic tribes)
There's also the A in laser. You pronounce it as a long A, even though it's a short A in Amplification. Also, I've never heard anyone say ee-mission, but I guess that's a dialect thing.
I think everyone should watch this before arguing for either pronounciation. It goes through all the most common arguments in like 1 minute, and it's pretty funny. Overall one of my favorite videos on YT right now.
G people proved that if ya willing to kill over it it's easy to get "say it however you want" outta the creator, ending the debate. If J people were that nuts imagine the history lesson. I'm sure people killed each other over less but it's crazy and funny.
It's /gif/ because the creator of a format doesn't get to modify rules of pronunciation, the closest pronunciation to gif is give, which is also pronounced /gif/.
@@synterlu the creator of a word absolutely does get to decide how that word is pronounced. Source: literally every word ever spoken in the English language.
@@josephwilliams5292 no, just because a word was created doesn’t mean the way it’s used or pronounced will never change. Source: Literally every language from the past compared to today.
@@EndRU-vidShorts_ I mean he def did, tho I feel that tends to get missed? He responds by turning around and saying ‘but it’s still me’ to himself in a sad surprised voice. The stage lyrics for final chase talk about it too TO BE FAIR sa2 is infamous for its rough audio mixing, I feel a lotta shadows quieter line reads get missed cause of that
Today, my teacher was teaching us some acronyms and one of them was laser. So I bravely volunteered to say what it stood for and my classmates just stared in shock and confusion cause I said it pretty fast. I then showed off more by saying what GIF meant. Thanks Jehtt for giving me a moment to shine. 😊
They're not though. All they do is show how pedantic he is, Every keyboard warrior's dream. His whole argument is calling Sonic out for being inconsistent while his entire argument was inconsistent. Shadow would have to say Jpej with his jiff logic so Sonic should be allowed to say Gif
Actually "laser" doesn't have any acronyms that I know about, but a Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation does... which is "laser" ! :p
Sonic and Shadow arguing over pointless nonsense perfectly captures their rivalry. I'd watch an hour's worth of the two hedgehogs arguing over nothing!
New knowledge I've gathered from this video: - the creator calls it "jif" - GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format - the P in JPEG stands fpr "photographic" - San Francisco has a lot of gentrification - scuba and laser are acronyms - what laser is an acronym for
@@God-T I rather wait for Jet the Hawk to take that role, but I will understand if they use Shadow in that way to kind of tie into the "brother connection" thing that they had going on for the 2nd movie. In my opinion though, I rather like to see Shadow being a hero for humanity because he has a reason, vs. Sonic who never needed a reason to fight for the good side. I know that that's not Shadow in his entirety, but if you want SA2 Shadow then this is what we got from him in that game.
@@drewhagen9305 That was definitely the original intent with shadow, being an actual threat, and giving sonic a morally questionable alternate "him". But, the modern interpretation of the sonic and shadow relationship is usually just petty bickering.
Holy shit I didn't even realize that, I thought it was just a generic city but you're absolutely right, there are trolleys going through and everything
@@John-X 3 things. 1) A soft G makes the J sound, 2) words in an acronym have no effect on the pronunciation of the acronym, and 3) the soft G sound comes before I in most cases like gist, giraffe, giant, ect. where gift is an exception.
I love how they both have genuinely good points and arguments. It’s honestly funnier than them just swearing at each other and doesn’t have them come off as complete idiots
@Confused Slav Its made of cocoa butter and doesnt contain chocolate solids or any form of cocoa. So yeah, it wasnt really a chocolate in the first place but somehow its considered one
@@FylixAerou what does "Graphic Interchange Format" have to do with the pronounciation of "GIF"? The pronounciation of a word acronym is independent of the words that make up the acronym.
@@idogaming3532 because GIF and graphic are treated as their own words. The same rule applies for every single word acronym and partial word acronym. Some other examples for this are: BASE - Bridge Antenna Span Earth (Long A and short A respectively) NATO - North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Long A, short A) GRAS - Generally Recognised As Safe (Hard G, soft G) CASA - Civil Aviation Safety Authority (Hard C pronounced like K and soft C like S respectively)
I keep hoping they make a Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 Abridged Series just from the cutscenes alone. If they did, it would be remarkable. The voice talent here is impeccable. Sounds exactly like them.
@@DavidAKJohnson you should watch Snapcube’s fan dubs. They basically improvise every piece of dialogue in cutscenes with fitting voices. They basically redid the cutscenes in Sonic ‘06, Adventure 2 and Sonic Riders into none-sense
