Some people will tell you that a bear bell is a neccesity when hiking in bear territory. Many of the professionals will disagree. I go over my thoughts about bear bells and how to wear it if you do decide on wearing one.

My wife bought me a bear bell for Christmas a year ago, I thought, NO WAY was I going to take it on a hike. Well, last year I did a solo 6 day section hike on the Oregon PCT and I took the bell. I started out carrying it on my pack. After a while I realized I was not getting a lot of ringing. Several hours into my first day I moved the bell to my trekking pole, it rang every time I planted the pole. 5 miles into my second day, I rounded a corner in the trees when I saw a black bear a hundred feet or so in front of me on the steep upper slope. He/she had their hind feet on the trail and front feet heading up into the trees. They looked at me, I looked at them. I raised my trekking pole and rang the bell and the bear ran up the hill and out of site. I believe the bear heard my bell and was getting ready to run when I came around the corner. I will never hike again without my bell attached to my pole! It worked!

My hiking buddies refer to bear bells as dinner bells. When we hike there is lots of conversation and no bells. We purposely get louder in areas that as you said are lacking visibility. Love your videos! Keep them coming!!

What you REALLY need is the awesome song I wrote. I sing it when bored on trail even when bears are unlikely. And it's great for when bears might happen. It's called "Hey, Bear" and it's to the tune of Smashmouth's Rockstar. Yup. "Hey, bear--you're a cute bear, you're a smart bear-hel-LO! Hey, bear, you're a fat bear, you're a sleek bear-hel-LO! You-are-the-best-bear-in-the world!" And if you have a decent vocabulary, finding new adjectives can amuse you for a while. I try to stick to flattering adjectives, as insulting the bears just seems poor form. 🙂

Having backpacked a number of times in GNP grizzlies were regularly seen. In closed in areas we just yelled “hey bear” and that seemed to suffice. While we did not bother with bells we did carry bear spray. Of course the running joke was “ how do you identify bear scat? It smells like bear spray and contains little bells”!

'Various ways of cooling off Kodiak's present hot war between bears and cattle have been proposed. One rancher hung bells on his sheep. He later found bear dung with one of his bells in it; the bear had eaten the sheep, bell and all. Cattle ranchers have tried bells without much success.' Source: “The Outdoor Life Bear Book”

Great video! The bell sounds warn bears of your presence and allow them to flee the area, hence reducing the risk of encountering wildlife prey and and keeping you safe.

I have a small fairly loud goat bell on the side of my daypack. I do a lot of solo hiking in wilderness areas. So far I’ve only seen bear from a distance on the trail along with tracks/scat. Can I prove it works? No but I feel more comfortable with it. If I see fresh tracks or scat i break into some of the worst sounding gospel singing guaranteed to scare off anything. 😂. I get a lot of comments and questions from other hikers but that doesn’t deter me.

CANADA, 9.984.670 km², over 20,000 bears, from grizzlies to polar bears --- so: 1 bear / 500 km². ROMANIA, country of southeastern Europe , 238.397 km², 6 000 brown bears --- so: 1 bear / 40 km². We have bears in Europe ! Too many (especially in RO)!

They really don’t warn a bear of your presence. It’s better to talk loud with rising pitch and tone and add banging sounds

Grizzly bear poop differs from black bear poop. It smells like pepper and has bells in it.

I've found singing Taylor Swift songs scare off the male bears but, unfortunately, attract juvenile female bears. Good video Jay.

Even the front, still puts you way too close before it’s prominently audible. I stick with aluminum trekking poles both for their durability and much sharper sound when banging them. Great for bears, lions and snakes. My goto song is usually one I call “Yo Bear!” or “Yo, Cat!” Not quite a yodel, but projects well and is just a run of rhymes. Congrats on the amazing summer you’re having!

I've never heard of bear bells. I backpack and talk to myself outloud. I've only had one extremely close encounter with a black bear and he huffed and turned and walked away...thankfully.
