Really enjoyed this video. Thank you! Since you made it, we’ve had the chance to see a couple of small boards JF has used for gigs like the one on Howard Stern and a big board that might be going on the Unlimited Love tour. It seems his alternative to the DL4-or at least one alternative that he’s trying out-includes two easily available and cheaper pedals: a Carbon Copy and an Echoplex, both analogue. I suppose an advantage of the DL4 generally, in either its old or recently revamped version, is that it has a tap tempo and gives you the chance of assigning three delay types to footswitches. Do these considerations affect your answer to the question at all? It would be fascinating to know. Like so many, I’m truly grateful for your channel.

Excellent video as always! Delay is definitely something I don't think is particularly critical to tone chasing. Other than type of delay (digital, analog, tape, etc) I believe the level of controls available is more important. To me that's what's more important anyway, but I suppose with anything once down to the nitty gritty there are differences, and even John had multiple delays on his board! Someone else mentioned the m5 and that replaced my dl4 and fm4 as it nailed both sounds perfectly and was more convenient. And now the m5 has been replaced with an HX which again is able to dial in the exact same sounds. I'd recommend both as they offer more functionality, aside from the dl4 looper, which is a bit of magic on its own.
@Vigi
@Vigi 3 года назад
Great input! I agree. Only time tone chasing could possibly be relevant for delay would maybe be for analog delay, but that is not really relevant in this case anyway. :) It would be really interesting to compare the dl4/fm4, m5 and HX. :) It’s interesting that you can confirm the sound the same.

I bought the dl4 recently and listening close to don't forget me live at lane castle, I figure out John uses the tube echo instead of digital delay, there is a little and particular saturation on this mode in dl4. try it out! =D

Boss sound better but the line6 has more of John's characteristics. I believe that the older system on line6 provides a "dirtier" signal, which is exactly what he likes...

Great vid, Vigi. Actually I think John used his PDS-1002 for the slapback in through away your television live, and on don't forget me he used both line6 and digitech the same time. I don't have the dl-4, put I have PDS-1002 - digitech really has that low-fi sound John often used
@Vigi
@Vigi 3 года назад
Thank you! Hmm yeah now that you say it I’ve heard he used the PDS on TAYT. Don’t know why it sounds so bright to me when listening to John’s sound. I’d assume the PDS doesn’t sound particularly bright. 🤔 But him using both delays on DFM was something I’ve never heard before. Do you know a source? Would be interesting because I did not expect that. ☺️

@Vigi
@Vigi 3 года назад
Wow, nice. ☺️I love soucoz’s videos and this one was interesting to watch. I’m unsure if John did it this way though, because you would need very good control of the delay time in order to make this sound right. Soucoz says he used the TC Electronic triple delay pedal, and that pedal seem to give you more precise control of the delay time (note lengths). However, I don’t think John used a delay pedal with that feature when playing DFM live. 🤷‍♂️
@Reolins
@Reolins 3 года назад
@@Vigi pretty sure in studio it was 2 delays, live - maybe 1. About the brightness - we all know John had a very long pedal chain, but on TAYT he definitely stepped on his Micro amp pedal - and that pedal plus bridge tele pickup give you some brightness :) BTW, can I contact you in private to talk more about John's sound? What is the best way to do it (if you don't mind of course)

Personally I switched over to the Strymon Timeline which is more expensive then the DL4, but it's more compact and allows you to dial in the same sounds of the DL4 and many many more. To be fair, I don't think John used the DL4 for the slapback tone (hunting for some rare clips made me come up to the conclusion that he was using his PDS delay pedal) so I don't think the brighter thing is anything to consider, as the PDS is just a standard digital delay without any drastic EQ going on. Any EQ given by the PDS may come only from its IN and OUT gain sections, which would anyway be a quite marginal. Anyway, I really enjoyed the video and I enjoyed you bringing up the question and comparison for all of us out there to discuss about it! Thank you :)
@Vigi
@Vigi 3 года назад
I have no doubt the Strymon Timeline works great to anyone who can afford it. It do indeed seem like a very high quality pedal. :) I actually watched your great delay video for inspiration and to learn. So I saw you recommended the PDS for TAWT and I think it’s accurate. As someone else commented, me finding the delay sounding bright was probably due to the guitar tone, not the delay. I should’ve clarified the dl4 probably was not used by John. But and the end of the day what I had to work with was only the dl4 and the dd7. I still feel the dl4 was more convenient to work with than the dd7 for TAWT due to being able to shape the tone, because the dd7 didn’t give me the exact sound I wanted for TAYT in this particular case. In another case with brighter amp tone or other pickups, then maybe the dd7 would’ve worked great. :) Thank you very much! It’s a bottomless pit really, haha. But that’s also what makes it fun to explore. ☺️

With my AirPods in, the boss sounds more clear. The line 6 has a looper and more delays ready to go at any time. Based only on sound, I pick the boss. I think you could stack 2 boss digital delays and a looper pedal and have no need for the line 6.

The line 6 m5 could be another option, it has all the same sounds as the dl4 and more. Also it costs way less than the dl4 and doesn't take as much space

My bad, I know he uses the mooger pedal and josh used the FM4 but I saw a comment saying you can get the same effect with that green dl4 if you use the sweep echo and put delay 0, repeats 4, tweak 8, tweez 8, mix 6, I just wanted to see if that were true or not since I haven’t seen any vid examples since I. Cant afford the mooger, I was gonna get a dl4
