Do You Really Need Snow Tires? Pro's vs. Con's! [2024 Update]
The age old debate, winter or snow tires, versus all season tires, and summer tires, and how they perform in the snow and with snow driving. Well, in this video we talk about when you need winter tires, whether you need winter tires in the snow, and whether you can use all season tires in the snow.
This is a video for non WRX or STI drivers, or for us fellow Subaru WRX or WRX STI owners. If you need WRX tires or STI tires, check it out.

Finally!! A useful video about tires! I'm an Tacoma driver and my wife drives a Traverse. We live in Salt Lake City and occasionally hit the ski areas or heavy valley snows (5%), 80% on paved and 15% in summer time off-road siruations, especially in the Tacoma. You've saved me big bucks because of NOT buying snow tires. Have M&S on Tacoma. Will stick with all season on Traverse. Thank you.

Funny timing. I live in the Indianapolis metro area and put PS4s on steelies as my winter tires for my 2023 WRX that I bought in July 2023. I also had the PS3 A/S on my three previous cars which were the 2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia Q4, a 2018 Regal TourX and a Q50 AWD; those tires handled the two big snows we get here each year easily. The only dedicated winter tires I had were Blizzaks for my 2016 WRX and also on my 2007 Fahrenheit GLI, but the temp swings here no longer support going to a full winter tire anymore and they really didn’t on my 2016 WRX; was constantly freaking out about the excess wear I was enduring on the 45+ degree days in winter here. In my defense, I grew up 20mi from Lake Michigan and had to live/drive through constant lake-effect snows for 5mos out of the year.

I feel that! Growing up in boston it used to be constant snow here but it is for sure changing!

Wow! You did a fantastic job on explaining the differences between summer, all-season and snow tires. Thanks! About the replacing a tire part, so you are saying if a get a flat tire that can't be repaired, I should go ahead and replace all the tires? Is this because of the AWD system or does this apply to all systems? Also, I have a 2023 base WRX and just bought an OEM 17 inch wheel in excellent condition from a wrecked WRX. I'm planning on getting a tire put on that wheel and use it as a full spare. Are there any issues with driving on the spare full size wheel with a different tire type/wear for short periods? I read somewhere that doing so could mess up the AWD system.

Now that I finished the video. I will wait for the video about not mixing the tires. My father used to tell me that as long as it's the same old/new tires in the front/back then it's going to be fine. Thank god my WRX hasn't gotten a flat tire yet but it's an interesting topic.

It’s a little less impactful on fwd/rwd cars and especially on the non drivetrain axle, but still will wear down the suspension and the tires

Thanks for the info. I'm from a warm city in California and drive up to the mountains only about 2-3x a winter. I'm gonna put all seasons on my wrx once the stocks wear out. Summer tires may be more ideal here, but I don't really do any performance driving in summer and want better mileage than the stocks since it's my daily.

Summers will generally give you the best mileage! Just an fyi! But if you do trips where summers are too risky, good all seasons will do the trick
