Big Town Mall was a shopping mall located in the Dallas suburb of Mesquite, Texas. Built in 1959, it was the first enclosed shopping mall in the Southwest. Its last anchor tenant (Montgomery Ward) closed in March 2001, and it was demolished in 2006.

I wish Big Town was more well documented. I remember it still being somewhat lively in the 80s, then watched it slowly turn into a ghost town in the 90s.

I was sitting here thinking the same thing as I was watching this. I remember my mother saying there used to be a Santa Clause there at Christmas. I remember it being very busy in the 1980s, but by the early 2000s it seemed to be a hangout for the elderly and eventually the entrances to the main mall were blocked off and the only way into any stores that were left was through an outside entrance.

Grew up in this mall! My father managed Butler’s Shoes and my mother managed Colbert/ Volks. My brother and I would run back between the stores when my parents took us to work when we had no babysitter. Many Sunday’s were spent running up and down an empty mall due to the Blue Law that was in effect, so my parents could dress the windows. I have so many fond memories of this place. Thanks for sharing.

A lot of memories at this mall. The arcade the food at the cafeteria in Woolworths. I remember skipping school and walking from John B Hood to the theater when it was a buck and saw home alone and walked back,it killed the whole day lol.

2:05 The Sanger-Harris store shown was in the A. Harris Oak Cliff Center on I-35E and Beckley near the US 67 split, now the Dallas ISD's Nolan Estes Educational Plaza.

If I remember correctly, the last things to keep going other than the exhibition hall were the auto shop that I think turned into a rental car place, the theater that turned into a dollar movie type theater, and the bowling alley that was a mainstay for years after everything else was closed.

Big correction. Sanger Harris closed in 1987, BUT it was never converted into a Foleys. It was closed and condemned as it never had a tenant after. All through the 90s the old SH location stayed condemned and secluted from the rest of the mall as it died through the years. We used to do our homework at the little water fountain area in front of the old SH and adjacent to the old Penny's. It was so quiet in that part of the mall for years.

My now 88 year old grandmother was the one who cut the ribbon for the opening of Big Town Mall. It's is one of her fondest memories. She was pregnant with my aunt at the time. She said it was televised, and I've been looking for a video or clip of it to show her. If anyone knows where to find this, I'd really appreciate the help!

Wow. I remember this mall so vividly. I lived near by in the late 80's. The las time I was at this mall was when I saw the movie " Earth Girls Are Easy" in the summer of 1987. It is a little sad to know that it is long since gone. I used to have so much fun there..

To see those old pictures with every parking space taken is really something. I do not think that you see that anymore, even at Christmas, at whatever mall is still left.

I was the assistant manager at the cinema in the early 80s. The mall was already declining but still very much active.

They should have kept Big Town Mall there it was pretty unique it seems like it was a part of like the 60s they should have at least made it a landmark because I would see a lot of signs that something used to be there it was the mall this whole time

Here's a suggestion, I think you need to do some advertising for your channel. I love this channel and honestly I think you should have millions of subscribers by now. You'll get there one day, for sure, but you got to do some advertising or something. ❤❤❤

I remember the smell of the corn dogs at the snack bar, the sound of the flint stone phones, the arcade, foot locker, the gun fights (no jk) in the later yrs. The sound of the movie theatre where I went on my first date after growing up going to see the police academy movies. I think I even saw my first movie there, Star Wars. I remember Christmas shopping in the 80’s when it was still packed sometimes. I live over here still though, I drive by big town every day goin to work. There are still gun shows every so often along big town blvd.

While Big Town was used for exterior shots in "True Stories," the interior shots of the fashion show were at NorthPark. My sole memory of going to Big Town was to pick up a pumpkin from local TV personality Mr. Peppermint. I lived closer to NorthPark and thus went there frequently.

I wonder if someday people will eventually get bored of shopping at Amazon and want to start going to malls again. But it will be too late because most of them are either torn down now, or else they're in a terrible state of disrepair. lol. That's how come maybe they should be keeping them up just in case there turns out to be a demand for them again. You never know.
