In this video, I went to talk to Thai people about religion in Thailand and understand whether religion is actually important to the current generation of young Thais.
Thank you. Please like, comment and subscribe!

Cool video thanks. I'm no expert on Thai culture, but it always seems to me in Thailand that Buddhism seems to be mixed with other Thai beliefs and traditions. Seems there's a pretty strong Hindu influence too, I see statues of Ganesh all over the place, some massive Ganeshs knocking around by some temples.

buddhism for my Thai partner here in Chiang Mai is very important. at least once or twice a week. however, the other spiritual following is animism (spirits of the land) is a daily practice. we live on a farm and we visit the Spirit House every morning. in the evening, she will recite a prayer at the alter we have set up inside the house. this is more to respect our ancestors; so there are photos of our parents. my point is that I've found Thai people to be very spiritual but not just in a Buddhist way.

Hey Paddy, very interesting topic! I found while living in Bangkok that the Thai's I worked with and became friends with generally did not practice religion or have any real interest in it but if asked would say they are Buddhist. Even the ones who would claim to not have any real belief would say they are Buddhist when initially asked. It seems like a default answer regardless of a belief and that saying 'I have no religion' as the direct answer to the question was not really an option that was considered. Off-topic question, but out of curiosity, how do you approach people in the street for these interviews and how often do you approach someone who you think might be Thai but are not actually Thai?

I think nowadays, Thai people view religion as faith or superstitious stuff that you can do to bring yourself up. It's really hard to find majority of people into things like meditation and getting into the teaching in the text, but giving alms to monks and doing merit is still a common sight. I see more and more people are comfortable identifying themselves more of an atheist in Thailand because they know now that the option is there and sometimes they are tired of some over-the-top superstitious of religious buddhist not understanding the teaching, or feeling like the faith is not worth worshiping, which is sad because the true essence of Buddhism is not in the worship, but in the practice of your inner space. The rest of the practice that people believe in are mostly animism disguised as buddhism.

I dont know how all of them strict much in their religious when I didnt see. But I think they are act like normal, I see they can eat pork (He said that it is delicious) or drink alcohol in some times. One of my friends told me when we just 11(now we are 18) that he wanted to change the religion, he said some rules of islam is not make sense but I dont know is he change his mind yet. So in my view I think people in urban societies didnt pay attention in their relegions much. But this is part of my view, there are many of Thai muslim that still belive in their religion and strict in rules perfectly eventhough they live in the urban areas.

Paddy has touched on controversial topics like politics in his videos already. I don't think there's any need for him to stay away from delicate or sensitive issues; it's not like by doing this he's openly showing support to or associating himself with a particular cause when he goes interviewing people on the street. Like an intermediary, he's just interviewing random people to get different viewpoints on things the same way Asian Boss does it in their channel.

Buddhism is more tolerant inherently like Hinduism regarding other faiths even historically, in contrast to say Abrahamic religions, which opened up recently, mainly some Christians have come a long way and accepted tolerance, for Muslims, it's more of a struggle day by day. There are no Sunday or Friday classes like in other countries, same as India except for Thai Christian/Muslim, so most Buddhists and Hindus aren't religious at all. Moreover, a believer in Buddhism/ Hinduism who leaves the faith is not killed off or face ostracisation in the form of fatwa/excommunication historically, like in many countries so that adds up.
