Sitting on the quad with my girlfriends, singing the hits along with our little transistor radios. I had one that was donut-shaped and bright yellow. You wore it around your wrist, and when you wanted to listen to it, you'd take it off and twist it open - the controls were on one surface where it split, and the speaker on the other. You'd use the curve to prop it up with the speaker above. Ah, the 70's!
Your papaw had great taste in music and it looks like you got that to from him i remember this song played all through my childhood on radio i aways loved it
Love it! I listen to all of these rock reaction videos from young rapper/hip hop fans who have discovered Queen, Zeppelin, Elvis and many others. This song sounds like it was written for them.
And here I am, just finding out Uncle Kracker did a cover of this With Dobie in accompaniment. Its real good. If you listen to it Enjoy. For me it had a tun of nostalgia but oddly it also brought to mined a thought of what Bad Wolfs cover of Zombie would have bin if Deloris(R.I.P. sweet lady) had bin able to reprises her vocals that day.
You don't know me but we are MUSICAL SOULMATES...LOL This and Dream Weaver are my funeral songs.......Right after the Raiders Theme. God Bless YOU.... Dale
Dobie Gray had the most beautiful voice. I remember listening to it and singing a harmony along with it. It's the kind of song that just makes a person feel joyful!
Some useless info for ya. This was written by Mentor Williams, brother of Paul Williams who is one of the finest lyricists of his generation and who wrote some pretty big hits for other performers. Oh, and he was also in Smokey and The Bandit (Paul Williams played "Little Enus")
Paul also wrote 'It's Only Just Begun' in 1970 for the Carpenters, among other hits.. plus check out the film 'The Phantom of the Paradise', an early 70s rock-opera similar to The Rocky Horror Show (which he also wrote songs for!), based on Faust and he plays Lucifer - crazy times!!
Uncle Kracker did a cover version of this song and had a No. 9 hit in 2003 ... and it featured Dobie Gray, too. It was a nice job, but Dobie Gray's No. 5 version from 1973 is better in my opinion.
"Gimme the beat, boys, and free my soul. I wanna get lost in your rock 'n roll and drift away." One of my favorite lines of any song EVER. Just a great, feel good song. Always uplifting. I never saw this video. It was excellent. Peace
Always played that song loud it was on AM radio back then only one speaker in the car but it was a song that inspired us when I was young great choice Dobie had a great voice
This was a big hit for Dobie Gray in 1973 and it has definitely stood the test of time. It's one of those songs that everyone seems to know. The other song he is probably most known for is The In Crowd from 1964. That was a fairly big hit for him.
Ramsey Lewis did an instrumental cover version the same year Dobie Gray recorded the original. The Mamas and the Papas also recorded a version on their first album.
Big hit when I was only 16- used to play this on local jukeboxes. As an FYI - Elvis would not do a cover of this song as he felt Doobie couldn't be touched on it and the King would never touch a song he didn't think he could do a better version of. Keep up the videos cutie. 😎
One of my all time favorite songs! What a voice! Wish I could sing like that. Seriously, this is one of songs that can bring a tear to my eye because it is so beautiful! They just don't have artists and production like that anymore.
This song came out when I was in 8th grade and everyone, And I mean everyone absolutely loved it. Such a different world. I'm so glad I had the opportunity to grow up to these songs.
My favorite all time song! I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone that hates it. It fits when partying, depressed, mellow, road trip, etc... RIP Dobie, from the testimonials I’ve heard, he was a stand up good guy.
Oh yes, 1972-1973. Doby Gray honoring this song with his great voice. Brings back so many deep memories. This song moved me the instant I first heard it.
An ode to the great music of the day, and Dobie was smack dab straight in the middle of it in the 70's. These songs, this song, do a wonderful job of making me drift away. Amazing this was only #5. That's how good the music was!
I have to admit when I was younger I bought “ Best of the Doobie Brothers” and was upset that this song wasn’t on there. Didn’t know it was a different artist. Same vibe, same excellence!
That's funny because I bought a used MP3 player once that someone had downloaded songs from Napster I think and they had this song titled as Give me the Beat Boy by the Doobie Brothers.
That’s funny. We all make mistakes. And you ended up with some nice other tunes, like Blackwater (one of my favs), and Listen to the Music. But this song, Drift Away, really hard to beat, an amazing all-time classic.
Another old song I've probably heard several hundred times.....but NEVER knew the name of the artist. Radio stations tended to play these things over & over.....but rarely took the time to mention the names of the performers.
Yeah and sometimes a similar sounding artist would have a new album out that you knew about, and you would forever think it was them lol. Atleast that happened to me. Not this song but...
I've been listening to Dobie Gray's version of Drift Away for nearly 50 years. I've listened to all the versions, original, Dobie, Uncle Kracker, Rascal Flats, Home Free, etc, but Dobie's version is the iconic gorgeous one. I can listen to it on repeat daily and never tire of it. So beautiful.
My daughter , who’s 29 now, has loved this song for many years. I’m happy to say I turned her onto many Different genres of music. His voice is so relaxing. 💓
Oooh, give me the Beach Boys, and free my soul, I want to get lost in your rock and roll, and Drift Away.... That's what we always said when we were kids. Lol
The great Drift Away, signposted by the fabulous opening lead guitar riff by Reggie Young. Listen to the fascinating interview where Dobie discusses how the magic session musicians at Quadrophonic Studios largely made the song. This was by no means Dobie's best song.
Most people don't even know that many of the greatest southern rock bands had black and white musicians making beautiful music together. Want you to think about how BB King and Eric Clapton have accompanied each other making the best blues music in history. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E-nxivOgJwA.html Best part is watching Eric and Buddy looking over to BB for the thumbs up.
Oh yeah girl now your listening to a great!!! Back then the music was all from the heart, just different artists of different color . still awesome in 2019. R.i.p. Dobie
Oh Dobie Gray, should've been a bonafide superstar on the music scene back then. His collaboration with famed Nashville producer Mentor Williams (largely responsible for that monster hit song you just reacted to, btw:::wink:::wink:::) yielded three rather ground-breaking albums for Decca/MCA in which he effortlessly blends country and soul like few others before or since. Simply put, if you like Elvis Presley, Solomon Burke, Ray Charles' country-leaning stint on the ABC/Paramount label, Al Green's pre-Gospel period, and Bill Withers, then Gray ought to be right there on your playlist sista! ;-)
Wow.... watch your video reaction and to know in what hour you make it, this make me feel happy... Because like young people, for US around the world the night always Will be young like us... Congrats for your video Beauty... Greetings From Honduras, althought you don't know if this country really exist.. jejejejeeje Was amazing watch your video Honey. Kisses and hugs..
Classic 70's soul. You should try the tune, I Wanna Get Next To You by Rose Royce. It was featured in the film, Car Wash... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5EO1nfSCKrU.html
Oh yeah, the originals ALWAYS sound better. With that said 💝Uncle Kracker did a damn fine job. You should try the band: 'Hot Chocolate'... Songs.. 'You sexy thing'.. or 'Everyones a Winner' or 'Man to Man'. Also, Donna Summer singing 'She works hard for the money'.... Thanks India, I'm 54yrs old now & I absolutely love you to pieces. ❤️❤️❤️❣️
A perfect tribute song to all hosts such as yourself who pull us through the day with the music together... I'm counting on you, to carry me through.❤️❤️❤️ Thank you for all that you do. Let's drift away together.
Not THEE great lyrics, nor THE most memorable melody, or even THEE voice that necessarily possesses the soul that forces grown men to fall to their knees. However, the combination of the easy, relatable, and heartfelt lyrics, mixed with the smooth tempo, melody, and perfectly belt out cords from Dobie Gray, and the fact that I have yet to EVER witness someone not turn the volume up when this song plays, IMO, just may make this particular ballot THEE most perfect song ever.
It's amazing how music and food bring people together as long as politics is put aside especially nowadays. SOOOO SAD. Grew up with SO many wonderful musicians from rock, metal, blues and the great artist of Motown. America is the GREATEST country EVER!!! Where ANYONE can achieve whatever they want as long as YOU are WILLING to work for it.
Love Dobie Gray. I had to convince Black Dudes at school it wasn't a white guy singing it. THEN, the video came out. When I got them to Listen To Pink Floyd, Oh shit, I had all kinda friends, black and white, the nerds, the jocks and others like me that were considered the "HEAD" of the class" Yes, it means that. I sold pot in school, BUT my rule was I never sold to anyone younger than me. The Jr. and Sr. year, I had all the rich snobby stuck ups coming to me and then I was their best friend. Shit happens, things change and instead of being just a stoner, hell, I was a FRIEND TO THEM. But I saw thru that they only liked me for my Good Shit. I got'em back though. I can't say what since it could be considered illegal. But it worked and they all still find me on Facebook. And what do they want? You may have guessed right.
Thanks to uncle who brought 33” Vinyl record from the US in the 70s, that was how I learned my first words of English with these songs. They then became my theme songs for Karaoke contest and I now become songer, song writer and new recording artist. You can check me out on RU-vid: by the name King Attah Wallaaii... I sing Reggae, Afro beats and Zouks
This music hurts soooo good! Sorry, but I have to extricate myself from your videos today, India. I gotta get up and get my day done. Will be back, tho. :-)
I've never seen the video of this song before. If I'm right, a version of this song was used in an Air Force commercial. Singer Uncle Kracker (I think I spelled that correctly) redid this song along with Dobie Grey. But, Dobie's version, the definite original is still better.
Oh, this takes me back to high school. It was on a K-Tel album I had. (K-Tel was a music label that did compilation albums with the moment's hits. They advertised on TV and you bought their albums by calling the number in the commercial.) Musically speaking, it was the best time to be a teenager. I was spoiled by the music of the 60's and 70's. Music now just sounds lame and pale and bloodless compared to songs like this. :)
8years old when this csme out 1973 Rio Vista Elementary great memories great time to grow up in North Hollywood with my 9 brothers and sisters such talent not like some of the crappy music of today rip mr. gray
I never actually saw the music video before I just watched your video. I'm currently 34 years old and I've heard that song on the radio on and off my hole life. When I heard that song I always pictured him sitting in a wooden chair bent forward a little bit playing a guitar. I've also heard the Unncle Cracker version but the Dobie Grey version just seems to have more magic to it.
Your pap and you have great taste, difficult or not regardless, imo. That smile and "aaawws" and "Don't it" sait it all...I grew on this too. I always listen to it in difficult times. Ringo Starr did a good cover of this together with a little help from his friends...
My first real love y'all sang this song to me. Sharing a lifetime experience with knowing what might have been. Still brings tears to my eyes thinking I know every word. My children are all growing up and I wish Andrew luck and love y'all.
No other song says it so well. God speaks to me through music and has been the best medicine for a rough life - just like the song says! The brother of actor/songwriter Paul Williams' (Smokey and the Bandit) wrote this song and Dobie Gray made it magic! There's just no other version that sends me with his voice and these lyrics and the arrangement. It's timeless
