Much respect for you Doc. 35 years is a great accomplishment at one job. Always wishing you the best. As always, thank you for passing on some of your tips and knowledge of Harleys to all of us.
It’s good to see all those older bikes , in my opinion Doc. The evo was the best engine Harley ever made . Love watching your videos Doc. You are a wealth of information and I really appreciate what you do for everyone ………
That's amazing Doc. Thanks for the memories. Hoping to go to Milwaukee. My first Harley-a 1969 125 Rapido. 2019 M8 Limited last year. Hope you get one too. I really enjoy mine.
Congrats on making 35 years in your profession. I retired 5 years ago after 40 years as a milwright for a major corporation. Always enjoy your content Sir.
What a great moment for you! Thanks for sharing! Thanks for your dedication! Low Country is very fortunate to have you and your knowledge. It’s great that this dealership will still work on motorcycles that old. My local won’t touch anything over 10 years old. Congratulations on 35 years. Best of luck in your future.
Development of the Harley 4 stroke engine amazing ..Doc U could go back to the 30's and 40's 50's ..changes in valve configuration etc intake .. exhaust..truly amazing video 🤠 thanks 🙏 sir .
Doc, great video, but as far as going to the Anniversary in Milwaukee I’ll pass, Harley has the band Green Day playing, there lead singer bashes my great USA, extremely poor choice for harley doing this.
Fun seeing people who know how to work on these different generations of HarleyDavidson. I've got a Panhead, a shovelhead and a evo and each one is awesome in it's own regard.
Very cool, most of the dealerships around Southern California won't work on the old bikes anymore. I am going to Milwaukee this year really looking forward to it.
Thanks for the memories Doc, not sure how old you are I'm 66 and love riding my harley (Evo) I purchased a M8 Roadking but found the weight a little bit too much for me, I'm 65kg. So returned to the Evo Roadking. Love the blog!! Cheers Graeme Jones, Western Australia.
I agree. This is the reason I ride a Slim. Just not sure I want to wrestle a RG or ST every morning ( but I do love their ride) BTW just turned 66!…..Doc
Know the feeling. Built my first Harley, with my dad's help, when I was 14 years old. That was 51 years ago. Still riding and building. Fun going down memory lane. Sure would like to have some of my old rides back in my garage. Oh well.
Thanks for sharing the memories Doc. You keep your information short to the point and enjoyable. I too think you should get a bike of your choice for all the loyal years.
I have a 75 shovel hardtail..a 1980 fxe 1200..and a 2000 fatboy...I have strongly been told I do NOT have a 1200 FXE .. Doc can you set them straight!!!
How cool..my story not as sweet. .I started on a '73 XLCH went to 1979 FXEF 80ci......then kids........started back 1999 Low Rider, 2000 Low Rider, 2003 Road King, now a 2005 Ultra Classic SE103. Still riding her pushing 97K miles. M8 may be in the future or maybe not. I enjoy your channel Doc.
That's awesome Doc! I have a 98 Evo FXDWG 95th Anniversary, 07 sportster, 14 twin cam Streetglide, 18 FLTRU M8, 2020 Streetglide M8 in our garage.., I know how ya feel!!
Very cool doc. You have seen so much and fixed so many dreams for the harley faithful. It's amazing how well these bikes hold up with just some basic maintenance. I wish you many more happy miles.
Doc, I am 71 years old now and I too have had some really nice bikes over the years. Starting out with a 1974 Shovelhead, kick only. Moved up to a 1980 Shovelhead, to a 1994 Heritage, to the 2010 Twin Cam Heritage stage ll and now a 2021Tri Glide Ultra. I wish I had all of them back right now. Like losing part of the family every time you move up.
Same here. 76 shovel- 85 heritage softail evo -92 same/ twin C- 2010 same Tc- flhtp 2010 - and told myself to wait 5 yrs on new motors ,M8. So 2 months ago 2022 FLTRK 114. Best one so far !!
I with some friends did take a tour of the HD plant and museum in Milwaukee in 1995. Before we made that trip on the bikes, our Hog Chapter, Columbia Hog Chapter had our last fundraiser. Our guest at that party was the one and only Robert D. Raiford and Bill Davidson, Willie G's son. The club dinner was on a Friday evening and the next day as road Captain, I escorted them around our poker run stops. That Saturday evening, we had dinner at a German restaurant in Irmo SC with Bill. What memories. We raised over $10,000 that day for Diabetes which Bill has and so do I. When we got to Milwaukee, Bill took us on a personal tour through the engine plant. Wonderful days back then.
I believe that is the attraction of Harley-Davidson’s for me, the history and longevity of the brand. I used to have some photos of me sitting with my grandpa’s Hydra-Glide when I was 3, and I’ve been a fan of Harleys ever since. I am truly blessed that I have 2 downstairs in the garage, a 100 year anniversary FatBoy, and a 2015 Ultra Limited! One of these days I’ll make it up your way for a visit. I spent a lot of time in Charleston when the Border Patrol Academy was there and have always wanted to go back. Hope to see you soon!
If I am correct , there was only a production number of 801 of those “ Brewster green and orange “ art deco painted Heritage shovelheads in 1981 . I remember going to my local HD dealership at the time ; in Brewster NY ! My father- in- law and I actually took it out for a test ride . Nobody wanted to buy it from that dealership ! The owner told me that they complained about the color scheme ! I couldn’t afford it - I was 21 years old , and he dropped the price to $$7,200.00 ! I begged my father in law to buy it and that I’d pay him back , but he wouldn’t go for that deal , lol ! I’ll remember that for the rest of my life . I remember factory installed black leather “ fringed “ saddle bags … ( do you have those ? )
Nice video, now I have a question. I have an 2004 Dyna Wideglide twin cam 88, with a woods TQ cam, along with new oil pump, cam bearings, etc. I am thinking of adding a big bore kit to a 98, but not sure if the bottom end will handle that upgrade with the TQ cam. Also, I just ride without trying to get to the next light the fastest. Why add the big bore kit, why not.
We do not know all your information. Mileage, services, condition of all the parts. I like your thoughts and desires. It is only my opinion that the 99-03 motors with the timken bearings were the strongest. Take the time to measure both end run out before making a decision…Doc
I just bought a 73 fxe and currently it's only running on one cylinder. What would you recommend for upgrades not so much for hot rodding but durability and pom.? Thanks. Fun vid.
WHAT????? A dealer that has something more than 10 years old in the service bay???? Nice to hear the history, didn’t make it into the Harley world until after the shovel was cycled out. First Harley was when I came back from overseas in 87, bought a used evo sportster. Worst bike I’ve ever owned, but it planted the seed. Now I have a TC Electra glide and enjoy the hell out of it. If work ever lets me have the time off, the coast to coast is gonna be done as well. Just want to get it done while I’m young enough to do it
Doc, I have always heard that the BEST big twin for long-term reliability has been the Evo engine. I know of many of them that reach high mileage without being repaired, even approaching the lifespan of say a Goldwing without being wrenched on. Personally, I think if I was to buy another HD that would be what I would get, yes they are not the most powerful, best handling etc... but from what I observed they stay in one piece forever. I would give up some horses for reliability any day. Were the old AMF Harley's that crappy, and I would have bet that when they needed service the first time around the issues would have been addressed, then they would have been much better or am I wrong? Worked with a guy that had and AMF HD and still rides it to this day, without many issues. He went thru it with a fine tooth comb, is a meticulous mechanical artist, and rides a lot, but not hard. I doubt it has ever seen 75mph in it's life. I love to associate with people who know their equipment and keep it up, and you Sir seem to be at a totally higher level, thank you for your video's.
I had every motor hd made but the M8 I don’t have the money, still have my 1979 shovelhead superglide but my favorite was my pan also, it was a basket case that took me coast to coast with no problems just a lot of oil, wish I kept that one, we didn’t need windshields, saddlebags and phone holders, all we needed was gas and a few dollars, we didn’t even have rain gear we used trash bags and news papers ah the good simple old days
great sharing. 35 years great! If you ever retire from the working aspect of motorcycles please get them to keep you on as an ambassador of Good will for HD and videos.
I just have one question Doc, when you decide to retire how can the owner of low country HD ever replace you! That's alot of knowledge. Stay safe and healthy and thanks for all this wonderful content!
Thank you for what you do. So many options out there for HD content these days, but I put yours at the top of the list. Your advice and tips have helped me greatly in properly maintaining my HD through the years. I hope to have the opportunity to stop by Low Country and shake your hand sir. Which one of your trainees has hung in there to take your spot when you retire?
Who needs electric start ,my 64 duo glide cold three primers then lights off on first or second kick .maybe I need to visit for a panhead tuning clinic
Doc you have to be my age , I have had 17 Bikes in 50 years my last 4 have been Harleys I love the EVO I think its the best engine they have or will ever have . I had a Pan for a short time . and helped a lot of the Shovel guys with there bikes . I have worked on a few Twinkies . I draw the line there, NO M-8 will come into my shop toy land toys .
That's awesome Doc...so cool that Low Country works on all these vintage Harley-Davidson's. I was also at the Sturgis 50th on my '88 EVO Softail. And I also have a 2013 Twin Cam! By the way, love your Slim...
Great memory whiplash, Doc! I, too, have 35 years on my job and 2013 Slim with a little "extra" added! Now I want a Pan and Shovel! Save some time to enjoy the ride-take care.
Thanks for you sharing your experience and the history you have , nobody can take a way memories like you just shared , I have many in my 65 year of life , and looking to add more riding , 7:41 I just traded in my 2005 Yamaha Royal star venture , for my fist Harley , a mint 2012 steer Glide , thanks
Thanks Doc!!!! When you were commenting on the HD Museum for a minute there I thought you were going to say they had a statue of you ready to go on display.... LOL Love the video and Thanks for the history lesson.
Congratulations on 35 years Doc. I watch all your videos and enjoy learning some new things from you. For now, I'm looking for them shoes.... lol 😆 Mike, your biggest fan.
Yes! Go to the Harley-Davidson Museum! It's not just for motorcycles...it's really a great historical and cultural mecca. One of my favorite places that I always visit when I go to Milwaukee. Couldn't agree more, Doc!
Pretty cool video, Doc. Thanks for sharing a bit of your memories with us. I am blessed too. I got to ride my '78 shovelhead just yesterday here in North Carolina!
