“Nurses eating their young” is a common phrase referring to lateral violence, which involves levels of bullying new nurses by their more experienced coworkers. It can ruin a young nurse's reputation and cause him/her to have feelings of inferiority, dislike of the nursing profession and ultimately translates to patient care. It is taught in nursing school. When I was in nursing school, I didn't believe it. I felt most nurses were altruistic and would behave accordingly with their peers. I was wrong. After experiencing this horrible behavior, I quit my job and I am now pursuing a Master's as a way to get away from it. Yes, I chose further education rather than stay and be bullied. I've also decided to do in depth research on lateral violence, and communication in the medical community. I hope this will help in my future to avoid the horrible pain I, and others experienced at my previous workplace!

Into paramedic school, I thought early on nursing would be something I could really get into, after some time of clinicals I really thought I couldn’t handle it lol. I respect what nurses have to go through so much, much much respect!

I’m so glad that Bianca talked about how schooling doesn’t prepare nurses the way experience does. I’m in nursing school currently, and I’ve been terrified of eventually graduating because I fear I won’t be as capable off-the-bat as nurses are expected to be. Knowing that it’s not just me and that more veteran nurses expect that of newbies is actually really comforting :) The “eating their own young” part of it, not so much...

Every time (few times) I've had a really rude or weird doctor, I've had a nice nurse that looked at me apologetically and treated me extra nice, especially when I was just a teen. I love nurses, big cred. I meet nurses so often for various medical things, I've started recognising almost all of them. I've only ever had one really bad nurse in my life. All others have been amazing human beings that I have so much respect for

I'm a complete helicopter mom but when my 7 month old had an allergic reaction to peanuts and was having a difficulty breathing I knew to step back and let the pros deal with the situation. I didn't want to be in the way. Thank you nurse's and doctors for all you do!

As a nurse, I encourage all nurses especially the new generation to start a change by having a teaching and helping heart to new nurses and not tearing each other apart. I went through "nurses eat their young" hell before, so I told myself when I become a senior nurse, I will be the opposite. Now as a senior nurse, new nurses older and younger than me love working with me. 😁 Mission accomplished! 😀

The nurse vs nurse is so true. Even in clinicals, they would treat nursing students awful. In my last semester, in icu, I was assigned to a patient and they had a specfic nurse and she was very kind but the next day, I had the same patient but different nurse. Classmates didn't want to be with that nurse cause she would literally insult them or tell them to leave. My professor asked me if I wanted to change patients and I said no cause I already had half of my work done and created a bond with the patient. Long story short, that nurse ended up explaining everything to me and wasn't harsh as she was with others students. The professor was so proud... The thing was, I didn't know that nurses reputation until the end of the shift.

Imagine a world with more people like these two, it'd be heavenly

In defense of Dr House, he always (at least to my experience of the show) gets his patients as a consult. The patients have seen regular doctors who have tested them for all the regular things. So by the time they get to House, the patient with the fever has ruled out bacterial infections, viruses, drug side effects etc. and the plague is starting to become a more likely culprit.

Nurses always for the win, I had a severe accident fractured C5/C6 vert, and other than the occasional doc coming in to fill pain scripts, and one amazing surgeon who fixed me up, it was the nurses that brought me back. Side by side every struggle I went through they were by my side, even just having a chat. Nurses are the most amazing and underrated personnel of the entire medical system. Love nurses forever and always xoxo

Gotta love a well written note vs. "patient has concerns about _____. Spoke to them. questions were answered. they understand." If the patient calls, it's helpful to know so we don't have to make them wait or pass the message around trying to figure out what they did/ spoke about.

I have those same anxiety dreams about being late!!! They're the worst!

4:00-4:44 I've discovered your channel like a week ago and binge watched pretty much everything. This moment is the moment I relate to the most! I'm also an aspiring (male) nurse and last year I heard I wouldn't get any new knowledge for the rest of the education and I freaked out, bc I really had the feeling like I wasn't ready to become a professional nurse. Also during every internship I had no one who took me seriously, bc you're basically at the lowest in the hierarchy (this is ESPECIALLY true in hospital settings). There are few nurses who think: 'hmmm, he could bring a lot of new information and research to this division''. Almost everyone says ''we've been doing this for x many years, and it always turned out fine.'' But the thing I still struggle with the most is the stigmatisation (hope that's the correct translation haha). At the beginning of every internship I had, I always indicate that I want to work like equals and that I don't have a problem to help women or girls. Last year I had my internship (feb-jun) in a place where you have about 30 different children that are living with assistence. This were children with a mental disability (so around 3-4 yo). Atm of writing this I'm 19 yo, so I get some colleagues wouldn't like it if I took care of vulnerable girls around the same calendar age, but on the other side I've worked with these children since feb and I'm still working with them rn. Tbh I'm quitting this job in about three weeks, bc in feb I'll have a new internship. I'm the only male in this division and a lot of male clients love me bc I can relate to them better, so that's kidnof an unfair advantage ;) But there are a few colleagues that still have a problem with me when I for instance help a girl with showering or when I put them in bed and read a story, bc I sit next to them. There's one girl in particular which can easily be overstimulated, which can eventually manifest in verbal or physical aggression. To become less stimulated she wants to give the person who is closest to her at that moment a hug or wants to play with their hair. I sometimes am scared to give her that hug, bc I get the feeling my colleague will have a problem with it, but that may result in her losing control and punch me, or worse, other clients. And their are a lot more of these instances where I think ''oww shoot, I hope they aren't going to address this'' I'm kinda sad that it's still a problem I have to think about really hard. Especially bc I think the most important thing for children is closeness, and if you can't give this to them, you'll LITERALLY create distance between you and your clients. I love all the children I've come to work with and I can clearly see they love me back, bc they always ask 'where's Ryan? when I don't have a shift, 'Ryan, will you help me with this or that', Ryan will you put me in bed, or Ryan are we going to do something fun together? It really shows they've made a stronger connection with my way of taking care of them and showing closeness than with my colleagues the know longer, and I love to see it. But still I think it's hard to work with all of these prejudices
