In this video Doctor O'Donovan explains four treatment options for psoriasis that affects the scalp and hairline.
What is psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a skin condition that causes flaky patches of skin which form scales. On brown, black and white skin the patches can look pink or red, and the scales white or silvery. On brown and black skin the patches can also look purple or dark brown, and the scales may look grey.
These patches normally appear on your elbows, knees, scalp and lower back, but can appear anywhere on your body. Most people are only affected with small patches. In some cases, the patches can be itchy or sore.
What are symptoms of scalp psoriasis?
Symptoms may include fine scaling that looks like dandruff or appear as thick, crusted plaques that cover the entire scalp. Other skin disorders, such as seborrheic dermatitis, may resemble psoriasis. However, scalp psoriasis appears powdery with a silvery sheen, while seborrheic dermatitis looks yellowish and greasy. Scalp psoriasis is common in patients of color, but treating it can be particularly tough due to the hair type.

Key things to get the most out of your doctors appointment:
- Write down your symptoms including when they started, when they happen and how often you have them.
- Write down anything that makes them worse or better.
- Take a friend or relative along for support - they could also ask questions and take notes to help you remember what the doctor says.
- Ask the doctor to explain anything you don't understand.
- Ask the doctor to write things down for you if you think it might help.

100%, even some dermatologists, you walk in and walk back out the same, as in no real effort to try and help you/better understand the issue.

I lived with scalp psoriasis for over 40 years. Then one day I decided to try a low carb diet and shockingly my psoriasis disappeared. The flakes from my hair use to rain down on my chair at work. I always felt so embarrassed. I bought every medication and nothing worked long term. Who knew the cure was in my gut all along. Today I can use everyday shampoos, I've kept my scalp scrubber since that works but I've never gone back to overindulging in carbs.

Hello, I'm 21 and I'm diagnosed with this. My hair is falling rapidly, I've a concern: Will this make me go bald? Please reply
@NC-ub9qy
@NC-ub9qy 3 месяца назад
If you don't stop the psoriasis your hair will thin and if you lose enough you can go bald. If you start curing or removing the flakes your hair will stop falling. 1) You can oil your scalp to soften the psoriasis and use a scalp scrubber to remove it. 2) stop eating a lot of carbs (no rice, no potato, no items made of wheat) eat a lot of veggies and protein. Wash hair at least once a week. Do diet for at least two months and see if it makes a difference. You should see it stop in one month. Eat very little carbs after that. You can have some but not a lot otherwise your psoriasis will come back. If nothing works, see your doctor.

Dr. O'Donovan, you are an absolute Angel for helping people with information like this scalp psoriasis vlog. One of my relatives had regular psoriasis on her elbows, but was very fortunate not to have it on scalp. She used Vitamin D cream on her elbows, and it helped greatly. Thanks again for all the many interesting topics you cover to help your YT viewers... who share your info. with family members and others.

@@NuCreature8 The relative was not a sister. And, no, I do not know exactly which Vitamin D prescription cream was used. It was 15 years ago; and that relative has passed so can't ask. You can check with your doctor to see what is available now. Fifteen years ago, I'm thinking there was only one available because it was a new type of treatment then.

Thanks, very helpful. I first had an outbreak of psoriasis in my late 20s and it was terrible. I had to use several different forms of medication. Since then, I’ve been able to manage with just shampoos, but it’s good to note that you should check these products if your pregnant or nursing because many you can’t use during pregnancy.

zinc is excellent for all skin problems. You can buy the diaper cream that is not as thick as the plain zinc cream. However, it's not easy to get rid off the hair. It can be used around the hairline.

wait so.. there are genuinely shampoos you can buy that will help scalp psoriasis without having to go to the doctor? cause if so ill genuinely buy something to help because ive gone through about 5 different shampoos within 6 months due to agitation. the one im using right now is Aveeno ph balanced shampoo and it seems to be okay? im also using a scalp massager to massage my scalp everytime i wash my hair. also genuine question, should i wash my my hair multiple times a week or only once a week? like would multiple washes a week benefit my scalp in any way? sorry for so many questions, my scalp is just horrible and its just not getting any better

Hi please go and speak to your local pharmacist or check out the descriptions I posted in the descriptor box for specific shampoos. If it doesn’t settle with over the counter shampoos then yes I’d say you need To see you doctor.

HERE IS How I got rid of my psoriasis by massaging my scalp with a homemade natural product. I eat a Mediterranean diet. No sugar. I don’t have any health problems, no high blood pressure, no Cholesterol, no diabetes… etc. However, I had a psoriasis problem on my scalp. How I got rid of it: I put a red onion in a blender and added ¼ cup of water. I strained the mixture and massaged my scalp with the liquid. I wrapped my head with a towel. I washed my hair after one hour. I repeated the process every other day for 6 days. I got rid of my psoriasis and my hair grew back beautifully.

Topical creams, ointments and shampoos are not getting to the cause of the problem, just treating the symptoms. Likely diet and gut issues are the cause.

not all Americans have the financial stability to visit the doctors.. one check up and I’m making monthly payments for something I could have done for myself if I was given the educational benefit instead of paying someone else to do the bare minimum.
