As a medical student, my jaw fell open watching the attitude the med student gave this doctor. In real life if a med student spoke to a doctor like that, she’d fail her rotation 😂

I love dr. Charles explanation why they cant force her into surgery despite their own belief and knowledge of the medicine. Its also why we should normalize talking about death. Maybe if you tell the patient death is what is going to happen not might theyd listen more.

How hard is it to just explain the medical facts without disrespecting her beliefs? Also, you *cannot* force her into surgery. Patients are allowed to refuse even life-saving surgery.

I had an ectopic pregnancy, a very wanted pregnancy. The hardest thing was having to walk through a crowd of anti abortionists screaming obscenities at me for the life saving surgery

Doc Charles needs a show of his own. I kind of dont understand why hes not the main character. He is the most interesting one, has the most depth AND he`s the is a solid OG actor who can carry a show. So... Make it happen NBC. And Dick Wolf.

No matter how much you want to save a patient's life, it is their own choice to accept or to deny. Working in the medical field is extremely complex and not a one decision deal.

Many years ago, an elderly woman once told me. "Chances and opportunities only happen when you are alive. Live to be able to try again or try something new. There is nothing more upsetting than lost potential and ended perseverance. Especially to those who loved you and supported you along the way."

You *know you messed up* when Dr. Charles yells at you

It's very unlikely for the doctors to call the embryo a "baby", specially when it's ectopic. That only encourages a reluctant patient to hold on to an unviable process.

As a first year nursing student (in Australia though) we’ve already had classes on this sort of thing! Theres no way a student dr should get this far and not understanding what dr charles is talking about. Yes I know its a show, but you’d be surprised how much this stuff happens irl

That attitude she had toward that couple, saying "Even though it may seem like a miracle things can still go wrong", it's not what she said, it's HOW she said it. Dr. Manning was put off by it, you could see it on her face. Also, the parents aren't medical experts, and they come to the hospital to find out what is going on with their baby, not to get a lecture.

What's great about this show is how much it focuses on the emotional side of being a doctor. A lot of shows like to up ratings by inserting relationships or making the answer to the solution super abstract. But making decisions like this with moral implications is fascinating to watch with the right cast.

As someone who has experienced a tubal burst due to an ectopic pregnancy, I would not wish that kind of pain on anyone, its one of the most painful and heartbreaking experiences I have ever had...

This episode is a good example that shows that doctors don't get to play god and overpower the patient's rights.

Ectopic pregnancy is pretty straight forward to explain to a patient. Just a tank of empathy and sympathy while explaining to the couple. Majority of the patients just need full compassion from their doctors and healthcare attendants when needing to face a difficult time/news.

Currey is super smart but she doesn't have the people skills to be a doctor.

It's amazing how Dr Charles' actor can play a sweetheart and a badass and have both completely align with their character

Having experienced it for myself, I would never wish an ectopic pregnancy on anyone. It was one of the most physically painful experiences in my life. Yes, I was very depressed that I had a baby and lost it but also understood that the baby never would have survived in the first place.

I cannot believe she was continually let back into that patient's room... I 100% agree with her on everything but how she handled it. If I were that patient, I would have told them never to let that woman in my room again after that second confrontation

That's one of the biggest problems in the medical system: facts and rationality are important, but so is compassion and empathy.

I remember when I was trying to keep a friends morale up in the hospital while his religious grandma was refusing treatment because of "might die" and "wouldn't recommend". Later, the best doctor in the hospital came down to her room and told her straight up (paraphrased translation) "hello madam, I have the pleasure, or rather displeasure, to tell you that in 24 to 36 hours we will, as you asked, discharge you;" (he paused here then continued with a sigh) "in a casket, straight to the cemetary." Then he left. Everybody in the room (doctors and nurses included) froze in shock at the comment. I am still surprised how she didn't tank her blood pressure from that experience. She died a natural death years later, having done the surgery, after getting to see her grandson(my friend) married. Sometimes being pc doesn't get the point across

These are the hardest cases, and especially to a couple that have tried for years. I had a father first begging us to “Save his miracle baby” we couldn’t, his wife was barely 12 weeks, and then it was “Please save my wife.” When he told him how serious it was. Too see a grown man crying defeated over the loss of a child he wouldn’t meet, broke my soul. It’s one of the many cases during my nursing career, that I will never forget.

Dr. Charles is right though. No matter how much you want to save a patient, it is their body, their decision. A parent of mine is in a religion that when it comes to medical aid, they don't accept ANY kind of blood donation (iykyk) and we did have a scare once of them dying from blood loss. Eventhough my siblings and I knew giving them blood would save them, we respected their choice and told the doctors every chance they came asking, no blood. Luckily my parent survived but at the end of the day, we and their doctors respected their decision to not accept blood, eventhough they were on death's doorstep.

This episode is a pretty good representation of how abortion should be handled. If you consent to abortion in order to save you life, you're okay. If you want to risk it, whether it's based on religion or fertility issues or both, you are free to do so. And whenever we talk about it, we have to talk with EMPATHY. We have to listen to their struggles and imagine ourselves in their position. The situation is scary enough, you have to be gentle but clear, you have to be kind and tactful. Forcing someone to keep their pregnancy is just as bad as forcing them to terminate. The blond doctor is a great example of why we should respect beliefs, because you can explain what's happening to her body without calling out their beliefs in the process. It's probably a good idea to research their religion if youre not familiar with it in order to spin it in a more comforting way, let them know you made an effort to understand and are giving them the options that can align with their morals. Soften the pain they experience. Edit: Yall. Definition of abortion: the removal of A fetus and placenta. It doesn't matter if it's a viable pregnancy or doomed to fail, it's still an abortion. Ectopic pregnancies are one of the reasons people get the procedure. Don't be like the lady who said if that 10 year old got an abortion, then it's not an abortion. You can't just change the definition of a word. It's still AN ABORTION.

The actress for the blonde doctor is doing a fantastic job.. i know enough doctors that behave exactly like she does in this series.. and i hate every bit of it! Wonderful acting job!

The blond nurses question was while morbid and sad was a valid question however lying about the fetus heartbeat and the bl fact that it was alive and lying straight to that woman’s face was the absolute worst thing she could have done.

I need to watch this show ASAP! Oliver Platt is so good and every single highlight of Chicago MEd that they show on this channel is soo good!

everyone has their right to deny medical treatment but if you don't want it you can't be wasting precious time and resources at the hospital

I always liked doctor Charles but after this episode I was wowed at his performance.

Dr. Curry got put on blast here, but the way Dr. Manning stopped her from telling the parents about why the risk factors are still relevant was wrong too! They need to be told that they're not out of the woods yet, whether they believe it or not. It should be no difference than telling them their labwork

"there is a difference between being prepared and terrifying a sick woman" haha I have never heard anything more sickening in my 20 years as an ICU nurse... death was imminent and as a doctor it is your job to tell it like it is. not saying anything and leaving that to a student and throwing away blood that has been donated by people for people to actually survive on is horrible.

As someone who went to nursing school, it was heavily pushed that patients can refuse treatment, even if it kills them; however, I can understand the student doctor’s desire to save the woman from self-destruction (although there was no need for her to comment on anatomy vs miracles.)

I appreciate the other doctors handling it this way. I don’t agree with the mother’s choice but it is her body. If a doctor can get away with this without recourse they will feel emboldened to do worse when they have more power.

Sure the Med student here *definitely* made a lot of mistakes in handling this situation... But it also seemed like she was the only one even trying explain the risks to the woman. Like, shouldn't they have gotten someone more professional and experienced to talk with her instead

"There was a malfunction with the ultrasound". Thats literally impossible. Its fully technologist dependent. If you dont find a heartbeat that is there on a fetus that far along its because of you. And you would absolutely be held liable for missing something like this.

Why didn't they ever tell her that if she dies, the fetus will die too or that if she lets them save her, she'll have a chance of concieving another child? As long as she's alive, she has a chance of having another child. Why did they never tell her this?

I don't think they explained to the patient well enough that ectopic pregnancies are unfortunately a non-starter. There isn't anything you can do to save the foetus. So that effectively eliminates the foetus from the decision whether or not to have the surgery. Her choice becomes 'Do you want to live or do you want to die?', and if she says she wants to die, then the doctors have to decide if they are willing to essentially perform an assisted suicide by watching her die painfully. You can't force someone to have a surgery when they refuse, it has to be their choice, but I don't see why they weren't clearer about this element. She was acting like the pregnancy could become viable if she waited. On another point, the whole believe that God will fix it is just so confusing. Do you believe that God purposefully made the pregnancy ectopic and will then change it for some unknown reason, or are you saying that God was sleeping on the job so the pregnancy was accidentally ectopic and he will fix the mistake? Why would you trust God to fix something that went wrong on his watch in the first place? And if you think God is going to fix your health so you ignore the recommendations of your doctors, why did you bother coming to the doctors for help anyway? I mean this more respectfully than it sounds, it's just this sort of talk about God has never really made any sense to me.

I had many years of infertility and many miscarriages. I am lucky to have never experienced an ectopic, but I know the pain of losing a very wanted baby. I can understand that the blonde doctor crossed a professional line, but I cannot imagine coddling a patient trying to kill themselves to "save" a non-viable fetus. The "baby" is already dead. It cannot survive where it is and will kill you if it grows too big. I would never allow myself to die to keep a non-viable fetus alive. My life (and the life of this hypothetical patient) has value and means something. There is such a gross misunderstanding and so much misinformation about what an ectopic is. If mother dies, so does the non-viable fetus. This entire scenario was oddly handled by this show. I empathize with the gut-wrenching feeling of losing a very much wanted baby, but to blatantly ignore the opinions of doctors trying to save your life is odd behavior.

since she is choosing to refuse the surgery, go home. why stay at the hospital.

If i can be totally honest, i think its sick that people will prioritize being pregnant or having a baby over their own life. I dont understand how anyone could think "i would die in order to give birth, therefore leaving my child without me as a parent". Its not normal, and its a romanticization of happy family.

It literally doesn't matter what she believes or why. It's her body, it's her coice. Why is that so hard for doctors to understand?

Even before the main dilemma, she shows a lack of concern for the patient's feelings. A "miracle" though definitely originating from religion isn't even strictly religious anymore nor literal. It just means a good thing you saw as impossible to a lot of people. There's no need to correct this. Now, clearly this couple is really religious so they definitely meant in the religious sense but the doctor did not know that and to be honest it still means there's no need to correct this just in a different way. It isn't even "wrong" (well before learning the ectopic part) as it is unknowable if the baby was a miracle. It's unlikely but that's part of the idea of religion is that we can't prove any theory. But even if we knew for a matter of fact... literally who does this harm. Now obvious the ectopic part stop this all, because no one could reasonably say that a baby unable to ever be born could be a miracle and also they want to keep the baby using the miracle narrative which is harming her and could kill her. But before this, it harms no one and yet she feels the need to correct

I just wonder if the editors noticed that at 1:08 Curry used the hand sanitizer twice when walking out of the room, first she used her left hand then her right, but Dr. Manning didn't use any sanitizer when she left the room yet she was seen rubbing her hands together like she had used it.

I am living for the gentleman who sized up Student Dr Curry but was friendly enough that he got her to talk about her career dreams… and then used all that information to clock her tea. This is a like a 3 act story all in itself

You know, instead of lying to the patient and telling them that the heartbeat wasn’t there, you could just say that if they don’t do surgery, the mom and baby will die, and then you would loose everything. And then let them know they can always get pregnant again and then you could try to figure out why she couldn’t get pregnant and then she might consent to the surgery.

aside from all the problems here I never understood why some ppl assume they can only be parents to children that are genetically related to them. The patient has been trying for over a decade to "bring life into the world", why not be a parent to an already existing child and bring joy and a family into their world?

If the mother didn't know what an ectopic pregnancy is and that it's never viable and that bleeding internally from the damage the fetus developing in the wrong place causes, the woman *is* delusional. I would have gotten the husband more involved to persuade the patient to be realistic.

My first pregnancy was ectopic and it was so painful to consent to getting the methrotrexate shot. There was nothing I could do for the baby. 😞

I had a friend that had an ectopic pregnancy. She is Christian & refused to abort. I spoke to her because she refused to discuss w others. I explained to her how God gave us medicine. It was not a decision to abort. But the baby died the minute it was implanted in the wrong place. It was not about faith. It was decision to live or not.

She should go work for dr. House. He'd be proud.

Honestly I wouldn't have told her in the end. Ignorance is bliss. She could have gone the rest of her life without knowing she consented to it when the baby was still alive, even if she did it unknowingly

Twelve years. They could have adopted and have been raising a child for that entire time. But for some reason only blood mattered to them. It's sad.

It’s very interesting that there wasn’t a recommendation to bring in a religious representative to speak with her and way her options. Having a medical support staff explain the medical portion and the religious person help with any religious questions may have eased the patient into making a comfortable decision.

I would have respected her wishes. She was educated about what could happen and why the baby would never survive being ectopic and that it could kill her. Have her sign the forms and let nature take its course. Can’t force someone to listen to you. You did your best to warn the pt.

I think the worst here is that the husband does not have a say in any of this. You can see that he was willing to save his wife more than anything else even if he wanted that child. Like they can have another as showed by the tv show, but the wife would rather take her own life and forces her husband to live with such a loss.
