You would think by the time a surgeon was granted privileges at a hospital on the Emerald Coast of Florida that he would be able to tell the difference between the Liver (on the right side of the body) and the Spleen (on the left side of the body). Not this guy! Worse: It's not the first time he's made that kind of mistake.

Thank you for covering this, I heard this story and I really appreciate your Medical and attorney approach to explaining the situation. What I heard about this particular doctor was he had a situation similar to this prior to this operation. My question is why was he allowed to continue to operate and not suspended until the previous situation was resolved?

Really loved this video, especially the animation part to show the difference between liver and spleen! Extremely terrifying how incompetent some doctors can be! Thank you for this video and all the interesting information on medical malpractice, I’m really looking forward to seeing where this case goes.

This is so sad and infuriating, and thank you for your analysis. A couple of years ago, my husband had a bone spur operation, and we were so impressed with the care and precautions the team took. The patient next to my husband in the prep room had the same name (not the most common name, btw) and was born in the same year and month! Before the procedure, both patients were visited by each team involved to make sure they and their procedures were correctly identified. So sad that this patient did not get the same level of caution and care.

Like every other profession, there is always one that barely passed their classes and squeaked by. Too bad we don't get to see doctor's report cards.

One point is that surgeons and most specialists are examined carefully on their skills before being allowed to practice. Is there a reevaluation of their skills in performing new techniques? I know of some doctors who do spend significant time working with an experienced doctor before performing those operations on their own.

Haha JD, you’re not elderly. My immigrant grandfather is 95. He has some amazing stories about Nazis (the real ones), commies, etc…and he still has his liver/spleen!
