Lady Gaga recently went on stage with Oprah and said A LOT of great things about mental health. However, one of the statements was less than ideal so I decided to jump in and discuss. Btw I'm a huge fan of hers!

My dermatologist was the one who caught on my anxiety. I was hurting and irritating my skin without noticing whenever I got anxious, and she was the one who prescribed my anxiety medication and took care of my damaged skin. I dont need it anymore, but that just goes to show how a well trained physician can assist you through mental health problems.

@ChanceFavors310
@ChanceFavors310 4 года назад
@Ella Rose I think you are missing the point of this video entirely. I also do not see how you could make an effective argument that he is being sexist in any way. You have a celebrity, that has the resources to seek out and arrange more treatment options and evaluations from foremost experts in various medical fields than the average person and telling the mass public that doesn't have those same resources that their GP is wrong for treating their mental health concerns. Most of the country is on HMO and depending on the environment, getting a referral may not be the most pragmatic solution for the patient, ie long wait times to see the specialist or higher copays or even location. If you as a patient cant converse with your GP candidly about the course of treatment then perhaps you should consider if finding a new GP. is right for you. No one will say that its wrong to want to see a psychiatrist if you're having verifiable mental health issues, but it is wrong to use your platform as a celebrity to anecdote your personal experience when it comes to health and push that as fact. AHEM Anti Vaxers. No matter how significant her condition has been helped by her course of treatment, unless she received even the Hollowest of degrees from Devry ITT Tech Academy then maybe when you go on Oprah you could just share your experiences and what worked for you personally and leave it at that.

@plzletmebefrank
@plzletmebefrank 4 года назад
Yeah, then you gotta think about how many are teachers, or specifically assigned to police precincts, military bases, firehouses, etc. Some still have a practice alongside that, but even if they do, all that does take time away. So the number of ones with a full-time practice, or ones that you can even see at all, is different. Some are registered psychiatrists but don't have a practice. So yeah, not sure how much lower the number would be when you factor in the part-time practices, private practices, or whatever else. But it is a lower number than the 20 thousand.

There are many cases where people are depressed with no external causes. Having a happy family, wealthy, in love etc. It's not always about "society" the problem is in your body (sorry I don't know how to explain this in medical terms) because there are abnormalities in your brain.
@MM-co4lf
@MM-co4lf 4 года назад
@@czarzar4097 I couldn't agree more with you that an individual can be experiencing some abnormality in their brain that could lead to depression. However, my concern is that if we can confidently come up with statistical figures that can predict a large impact such as the one indicated in this video, I think we've got more than a purely medical anomaly on our hands. While I think we should consider the possibility that there are other variables aside from social conditions, I think it is justifiable to say that it is worth posing the question given that a lot of people will be affected provided the statistical significance of such a study. In short, want I am trying to say is that such an issue should be tackled from multiple perspective (sociological, psychological, medical, and more) if we want to fully comprehend the source of such a problem, and present credible solutions that would bring lasting changes.

The reason why haven't went to a doctor because just like now, I'm thankfully fine but last year I almost never eat anything because I'm just so sad I'm 85lbs standing 5'4 and it went to 74lbs in 3 months of experiencing this weird feeling of just not wanting to be around anyone. I definitely see your point, but I think you guys should remember that not everyone's experience is uniform, and there's a reason that people become afraid. My friend who is bipolar II, borderline, ADHD PTSD.. Her GP had her on 800MG OF SEROQUEL, mirtazepine, trazodone, effexor, and devol pro x. His solution was basically to sedate her until she was no longer an inconvenience, and I have a hard time believing that a psychiatrist wouldn't understand how FUCKED UP that is. To do that knowingly would be straight malicious. He didn't even refer her to a single therapy program, or tell her that she should see a therapist. Nothing. She's down to 300mg Seroquel, came off Effexor, devol pro X, mirtazepine and trazodone, is taking lamotrigine instead and finally treating her ADHD, and she's a real person again thanks to my psychiatrist that I referred her to. I totally understand where you're coming from and completely agree to an extent, I just think that many doctors don't know where that line is where it's beyond their scope. And for someone like myself who relies on a carefully balanced cocktail to function at any level, that's life or death for me. And it's that life or death seriousness that I think maybe even you guys as doctors don't realize. HUGE stakes. She was basically drooling on herself, and he stole YEARS of her life.

And even though you may disagree, I will continue to recommend to my friends that they at least get DIAGNOSED by a mental health professional and then have their GP take over from there with recommendations from the psychiatrist. You could never understand how frustrating it is to be 29 years old and still trying to start my life because it took 5 psychiatrists to get my diagnoses right, and then all the trial and error with medication. I lost my entire life and 20s right up until this point, when all of this could have been worked out within a couple years instead of 10. And yes, I grew up in a rural area, so just letting you know what it is like for those of us who didn't have the options.

It’s so interesting to hear about the differences in the way mental illnesses are treated in America. I live in Australia and can only speak from my own personal experiences but (at least in my case) in my state we go to see a GP (general practitioner - which I’m guessing is like the family medicine doctor?) and have a chat about what is going on and they have us complete the necessary medical forms and tests (like a DASS assessment or blood tests to check that everything is how it should be). Then the GP would put you on a mental health care plan and give you a referral to a psychologist (or a psychotherapist if needed). Depending on who you get referred to and your age, you can actually get up to 10 sessions a year which are 100% bulk billed by Medicare (meaning Medicare pays the full bill.) For example if you are under 25 and depending on your diagnosis you can get can referred to a place called Headspace, who bulk bill you if you are on a mental health care plan. I was always under the impression that whoever you got referred to would prescribe you medication if needed and wanted. Videos like these remind me that I shouldn’t take Australia’s health care for granted because in other places around the world they don’t have it as lucky.

In our case, we refer the patients to the psychiatrist. Here, it's still a taboo to have mental health issue and not everyone is willing to take medications for the same. It's quite pathetic how patients with mental health illness who are willing to get themselves treated are looked down upon here. It's quite sad. That said, training is such that the psychiatrist is always asked to see the case in a patient with a mental health component in their presenting illness. For patients suffering from cancers, we have a psycho-oncologist who has specialised in providing counselling and helping the patient and his/her family accept the terms of the condition and how they can go ahead.

In Germany family physicians weren't allowed to prescribe mental health meds for a long time, but now they can and it's not good. Family physicians are - often overworked - generalists that do not have the training it needs to prescribe such powerful medicine and actually monitor its effects between all the other patients with flu, heart trouble, stomach bugs, diabetes, etc.
@teddyavocado9179
@teddyavocado9179 4 года назад
Just want to add here that it's incorrect that Medicare 100% bulk bills your mental health care plan. There are psychologists that bulk bill and those that don't - many experienced psychologists or those who specialise will not be bulk billed completely - I have seen psychologists for PTSD and only one was bulk billed (who was the psychologist I was initially referred to who did not specialise in PTSD and I was referred to another one that had a $120 out of pocket expense). Many GP's will not perform blood tests or think to perform blood tests for mental health issues. There are those that prescribe antidepressants off the bat and if they refer you to a psychiatrist for further assessment it will only be partially bulk billed (generally speaking - it would at least be $50-$100 or more out of pocket). Headspace is unfortunately very busy as well and it can be hard to get an appointment as many young people are struggling with their mental health. Not to say Australia's health care system is terrible, it's really not and I'm thankful that we do have healthcare that is subsidised, but just wanted to pop some info here in case someone does seek help in Aus and comes out confused as to why they didn't receive help. I've had a great GP who was very thorough, holistic and friendly (who specialised in mental health after her partner took his own life years before I saw her) and I've also had a GP look at me sideways and tell me she didn't think I needed a mental health care plan because I'd had no "prior history of depression" (despite scoring highly on the self reported test you take given by your GP, which is generally the only assessment they make to see if you qualify for the 10 session mental health care plan).
@fruitphilosopher4624
@fruitphilosopher4624 4 года назад
@ginger nut I'm in Australia too, and just to clarify about your impression about medication - if you are referred to a psychologist or psychotherapist as you're saying, they cannot prescribe any medication. In some situations they may liaise with your GP or Psychiatrist, who can prescribe medication. But psychologists and psychotherapists are not physicians and cannot prescribe medication themselves.

"Not every patient with anxiety and depression needs antidepressants" YES!! The most important factor in a successful treatment is the relationship patient-therapist, not whether drugs or specialists are involved. Once you have found a therapist that works for you (I know it's not easy, especially when you don't have many choices or resources) you should just trust them and the process. If they think you could benefit from antidepressants just tell your family doctor; if you are not satisfy with the way that conversation goes, talk to your therapist and maybe even have them speak to your doctor. As long as you feel you are being taken care of you don't need to look for the best type of therapy or the most expensive specialist. But if you don't feel taken care of...guess what!!TALK TO YOUR THERAPIST!!!That's exactly what they are there for!! Illnesses like anxiety and depression have a way to make you feel isolated and alone in the battle, but you are not! tldr; psychotherapy first, drugs not always necessary...but your family doctor would probably be able to suffice in that case. As always great video!...Maybe react to some more Scrubs? =)

I don’t go posting about it on social media or anything. I don’t treat like a trophy or some simple means to get attention like many people do. I self diagnosed bc I was struggling and didn’t have access to health care. I treat myself as if I have OCD and BPD, adjust my thought processes as such, and it really helped.

I’m a mental health therapist, and I always encourage my clients to meet with a medical provider (whether GP or psych) and I try and work closely with that professional to provide wrap around services. While I cannot prescribe medication, I am able to meet with the client more often and for longer periods of time than their doctor. By coordinating with their doctor, I can provide some insight on behavioral changes, identified symptoms and progress to their doctor, who in turn will be able to provide more specified care for the client. Thank you for recognizing the gaps in mental health treatment. Many individuals don’t have access to specialists or aren’t aware of available community resources. Almost all of my clients that are Medicaid are referred to me by their primary care physician.

First of all a mental health therapist should never ever give advice on what not to do but you don’t follow up with information...if you just meet with them and spend more time with them ...don’t ever get on dr mikes advice because he knows how to handle it...if you get on this sight and your advice basically hearing them isn’t enough...you have to get someone to the hospital or a psychiatrist that can right prescriptions. Plus if they go in withdrawal they can die with in two days....so therapy isn’t gonna help without a psychiatrist. I know because I lived a horrible life because I didn’t have peace in my mind. I finally had my therapist right next to my psychiatrist. Insurance covers it and if it doesn’t then call and ask for the therapist and psychiatrist ASAP. They could be right, or they could be wrong, but for them to be wrong is so much more damaging because they get listened to due to being popular. People like her should have a responsibility to be up-to-date and correct when discussing such important topics as this, even though it’s not their area, because their words can have such an impact.

I'll tell you a good story: A friend of mine was showing symptoms of lethargy, insomnia, less appetite, etc. and her parents - who are very conservative about mental health - took her to a family doctor. The doc thought it could be anaemia, or some physical issue, but then my friend asked to speak with him alone. She went "I'm a psychology student, and I know self-diagnosis isn't right but hear me out - I think my symptoms are that of depression. I'm not sure though, which is why I would like to get a mental health checkup along with my blood tests, to be sure." The doc was really understanding and kind, so he called in the parents, explained thoroughly about mental health, and prescribed a visit to a therapist. Boom, she was right, and now she's being treated for it. Counselling from a therapist and the family doc gives antidepressants. No psychiatrist/specialist needed. Just shows how big of a role family doctors can play if they understand the patient well.

And if they have an understanding of what works for mental health treatment. MOST PCPs do not refer to therapists. This is the problem (IMO) when PCPs try to take care of mh issues. Most of them just prescribe medication without taking into consideration that those medications work better in conjunction with therapy. Many also don't consider that therapy could be treatment enough without having to put the person on a medication.

Let’s not forget anxiety or depression can be a symptom of an underlying condition. Thyroid irregularities can lead to depression , low glucose can manifest as anxiety, vitamin deficiencies can lead to lower energy levels which can be confused as depression. PCP’s really are the frontline and need to evaluate and assess before sending to specialist.

Zara22 I have a long history of mental health issues, but an intense worsening of depression, anxiety, and even paranoia was resolved by discovering a thyroid issue and medicating for it. Agreed. The trifecta of anxiety, depression and ADHD are symptomatic of a host of non-mental conditions. Perimenopausal women often experience these symptoms. Women who go through this stage of life earlier than average are more likely to be diagnosed with a mental health condition instead of as being perimenopausal. A psychiatrist or therapist probably isn't going to start with "talk to me about your periods," because that would be horribly dismissive, but a PCP is more likely to at least ask other questions that could signal possible non-mental health conditions. Even just bad diet and inadequate exercise can exacerbate these symptoms. I fully respect and support eliminating the stigma around mental health conditions, but at the same time, we also need to recognize that mental health symptoms sometimes occur as a result of a serious physical condition.

“Diagnosing ourselves is not the solution.” *FREAKING PREACH!* I’ve known so many people who self diagnose and it’s so unhealthy. Often it keeps them in the mindset that there’s nothing they can do to change, so they don’t bother trying. Rather than looking at solutions to their problems/pain they just shove it under the umbrella of a disorder they don’t actually have. One friend of mine “diagnosed” herself with Bipolar Disorder. I told her if her therapist didn’t think she was bipolar she probably isn’t. Her excuse, and I’ve heard this from so many people, was “I know myself better than the therapist knows me.” And I’m just like, yeah maybe, but the therapist knows these disorders and how to accurately assess them WAY better than you do. And It creates a lot of mixed up information that people who actually do have the disorder have to deal with. I think if you suspect you have a disorder that’s totally valid, and you should go see a professional to find out and get treatment. But if that professional tells you that you don’t have it, then you don’t have it. Don’t go straight to self diagnosing because no matter how much you read about a disorder, you’re not a professional and you’re not qualified nor capable of diagnosing anyone, including yourself. As someone with real OCD, the number of misconceptions and untruths I’ve had to deal with because people who self-diagnose spread their “research” is unreal. To those people... please stop.

My PCP passed away last year after being diagnosed with cancer - I’m 31 and I saw him since I was 14. He was amazing, that’s the very least I can say about the great man he was. Thankfully he passed his practice on to someone he trusted and my current PCP is still amazing. I’ve gone through hell mentally and thankfully they’ve been so great on working with my mental health care providers and also recommending their own care when I’m not seeing someone. No one is fully educated on what they are talking about not even you. Just because someone doesn't know all the facts, doesn't mean their opinion shouldn't be shared. There is so much information in this world that it is difficult to get an overall scope of what exactly is happening. Instead of always trying to undermine celebrity's messages because of an incorrect fact or perception, we should be taking their opinion with a grain of salt just as we would with a friend, a coworker, etc. and focus on their main idea in a larger context.

Murtaza Bijani Finding someone attractive is intimately connected with the human experience. InfantilizIng oneself and inviting in potential violent, extreme power dynamics into what is supposed to be a loving relationship is not. A deficit in self-worth is most definitely the cause, and it breaks my heart so many internalize societal power dynamics to such a degree that they believe their most connecting and loving relationships should become skewed in such a way. Of course, you will whole-heartedly disagree, but take a step back and look at the whole. I hope this changes with time.
@zain4019
@zain4019 4 года назад
Murtaza Bijani I’m really sorry that I have caused you pain. That wasn’t my intention at all. I was voicing the deep hurt that the worlds view of sexuality and sex causes me, and the real people that are degraded and victimized because of it. I’m a masochist myself. That does not mean that I can’t understand the hurt that that sexual lifestyle inflicts upon me, and how it has come to be- through a lack of self-worth and a need for punishment, for atonement. I also know that this sort of sexual pain never truly heals, just allows us to relive our emotional wounds in our bodies, to connect within ourselves to that part of us that so very much needs love. But instead of showing that love, it demeans and belittles our most fragile selves. It’s not a solution, and it’s not healthy. And I wish so many of us didn’t turn to sexual pain to try to heal our scars, but instead, truly sought out the unconditional love we have inside us and directed that tenderness within. Only then can healing be found. I don’t actually believe I’m an empath, though I wish I was. I’m just intrigued by their way of seeing the world, and I probably romanticize it quite a bit. I feel others emotions deeply and mirror their pain, but I don’t believe I fit into the classic definition of an empath. I try to show compassion and understanding- and that involves intellectually understanding others. Intellectual understanding of our world is far from hateful. If emotions aren’t tempered with rational thought and observation, then little progress or introspection is made, and we are may be sucked into and stuck in a loop. Awareness is important, and it took me a long time to figure that out myself. We as humans feels emotions, and they are all valid. Every one. But that does not mean that all our behaviors resulting from those emotions are healthy for us or for others around us. That includes abusive sex in place of loving connection. If we are truly empathetic, kind and loving beings, as you allude to in your comment, and as I believe myself, then is this harsh and brutal way we connect with our sexualities really the way we are supposed to be? Is physical violence and name-calling a replacement for gentle caresses and meaningful touch? I would say, of course not. We have infinite wells of love within us, and sex is a chance to let that wonderful expression flow. It’s negative life experiences which are not dealt with, and early corrosive emotions that we internalize- shame, anger, fear- from our caregivers and society that cause us to let go of the boundless love that we truly are in favor of what we believe we now deserve, something far less. It took me years of introspection and intense psychelic trips to realize the beauty of my own nature, to feel it truly. Sometimes I still hate myself deeply. But I know in those certain moments I have experienced, that we are all beautiful and wonderfully capable beings, that rest in and find refuge in only love. Everything else is excess. I hope this made more sense of my comment, and I hope you have a good day.

When I was a kid, I had off and on pain in my abdomen. It would be so intense that I would lay on the floor curled up. My mom eventually took me to the doctor and they ran all kinds of tests and never found anything wrong with me. My mom stopped taking me and it eventually got better. I use to have a very negative view on doctors after that and I still have a hard time trusting doctors. However, as I grew older, I realized that at the time, there were A LOT of factors involved unbeknownst to the doctors. 1) My family moved around and my mother was a fan of more...holistic medicine. Therefore, I never had a consistent doctor when I was young. We only went when things were bad and "as needed". 2) I was lactose intolerant (diagnosed by a chiropractor no less), which was accurate, but either way there was no official record of it. 3) My family had recently been through a very traumatic experience and my dad's Parkinson's got significantly worse. My mother was thrown into chaos and letting me eat whatever. So I would eat milk and cheese and all kinds of dairy while suffering the consequences. Hence, looking back I probably had some kind of gastrointestinal enteritis. But, a doctor wouldn't know that if they actually knew me. Another fun side affect of not having a consistent doctor: There's a very good chance I have ADHD (getting tested) only now getting diagnosed as a 21 year old and years of unexplained behavior making me think I was stupid. Lesson: It's extremely important for your doctor to know you , guys.

I was diagnosed with major depression, also known as clinical depression, when I was 15 years old. I went through the bad times, suicide attempts twice, I’ve seen a dozen psychiatrists, in the mental hospital and outpatient as well and tried about a dozen different medications. It was a hard time going in and out of the hospital and I am of course grateful for those psychiatrists, some more than others. I’m now 20 years old, very very stable, and have been on Zoloft since I was 17 years old. I don’t go to a psychiatrist anymore for this medication refill, I am able to get it from my PCP because I am stable and have been for years. You ARE able to go to your PCP and you should. They know a lot. They refer you to specialists when needed. It really really bugs me when people bad talk PCPs as if they’re uneducated and unnecessary. I love my PCP. Yeah, the mention of DBT impressed me as well. A lot of practitioners are overly fond of CBT because it's easier to administer, and will try to lazily push it on patients when DBT would be the far more effective treatment. Unfortunately, many clinical psychologists don't even have the proper training for DBT because it's such a hassle to administer, and psychiatrists are typically too expensive for people to afford the necessary volume of sessions.

My Dr refused to give me medication, because, in his words, "Your depression is dependant on your surroundings, when they change your depression will clear up. You won't want to be weaning yourself off anti-depressants while you're doing that" He was absolutely right. Around 4 months later I gave up alcohol and moved back in with family, my depression cleared up within 3-4 weeks. I found a job. I found a partner, who I am now married to and I have a child. My life has never been better. I'm glad my doctor wasn't just a prescribe and medicate type of doctor. Truthfully I still struggle with anxiety and depression today.
