i was so upset by the end of earthshock when i watched it. i spent the whole serial being so pleased that they finally got back on track with adric's characterization!! when he was the companion for four (and romana) he was pretty consistently done. maybe not astoundingly original material, and matthew wasn't the greatest actor at the time, but generally inoffensive and pretty charming to see working with four. post-regeneration he got a lot of short ends to a lot of sticks. adric's personality just kind of went up and down once there were two other full-time companions AND a new doctor for the writers to focus on. adric was always one of my favorite classic companions. i thought that the doctor saw some of himself as a kid in him and that he was genuinely fond of him in both regenerations. with time to mature and the examples the doctor/romana set for him, i thought that he could have grown up and gone on to do some really wonderful things out in the universe. he looked up to the doctor and wanted to do good for people. he was clever and adventurous, but inexperienced and insecure. that's what always makes his departure so especially sad to me. adric didn't get to fall in love or grow attached to some planet that needed his help. he didn't get to have a near-miss in earthshock that spurred him to realize ways that he might need to change or grow, even if it meant going somewhere else to do it. no, after a bumpy road with a new regeneration that they'd only JUST started patching up, adric died pointlessly, trying to save tegan's planet from a fixed point that he thought was a disastrous attack. he died trying to do something good, and thinking that he'd failed in something overwhelmingly more important than his own safety. adric's death was tragic to me because it wasn't only this team tardis losing a friend/the younger brother/son figure of their ragtag family unit. it was a loss of potential for both adric's future accomplishments and his character development overall.

tfantasyfan What the hell are you talking about the entire post-regeneration run was near perfect.

Yes, because consistency demands that he would have no idea it's established history. (FYI there are no "fixed point" b.s. in Classic Who) That was incredibly clever, finishing the story by explaining a real Earth event. I haven't seen such brilliant attention to detail and consistency since The Daemons.

Adric did not work well with the 5th Doctor, despite the fact Ward could not stand Waterhouse he worked far better with her than Sutton and fielding He is right that the stories were very different

Nyssa!! My favorite 5th Doctor Companion! Her character had so much more potential than they used! Criminal miss use of a great companion. She was still a great companion though.

Nyssa had been well developed on the Big Finish audios alongside Davison's 5th Doctor.

I always hoped (and still do for that matter) that they could kind of bring Adric back from the dead years later to these current episodes explaining how he was maybe saved by the master or by the Cybermen at the very last minute only he was badly injured. I had this scenario in my head that Adric would be angry, bitter and vengeful towards the Doctor for “leaving him to die” on that ship which would eventually culminate in Adric saving the Doctor and them both reconciling in future seasons. Kind of makes up for the cheesy way he was killed off.

I'm probably the only person on the planet who has a soft spot for Adric, yes he wasn't the best actor, but he also wasn't given much in the way of character development, or any good dialogue for that matter. They sketched him out as an "Artful Dodger-type" and he ended up a whiny brat who always seemed to take the villain's side, was arguing with the Doctor regularly and was looked on by Nyssa and Tegan as a petulant baby brother. He was actually VERY good in his final appearance on the show, and what a way to go out,.....

You're not the only one, he'd be my fave if it weren't for Turlough. There's a bit of a growing love for him on Tumblr.

Shaestel Odd that, a lot of my Whovian friends on FB also seem to have a spot for Turlough as well. I really wish Mark had been given more chances to shine, but with the TARDIS crew being as big as it was, it was hard for anyone to really do much except point at something and say "What's the, Doctor?"

+ladycplum I really also likes Adric too. At least he's not like Danny Pink who was a useless nuisance during his undeserved time in the series.

Mayo Tango131 Uggggh....just hearing that name makes me want to vomit. Boring character, boring storyline, no real plot purpose other than to give the Doctor a chance to rail against soldiers, why would Clara fall for such a yutz? I felt like his presence actually put the focus too much on Clara at the expense of the Doctor, and I love Peter Capaldi to death, so that REALLY honked me off.

Actually Tom got on well with pretty much every actor/actress. Tom was even married to Lalla for a while and if you watch the episodes of them together they do a lot of looking in each others eyes. Even Mary Tamm and Tom were notorious for pretending to snuggle on the set. There are clips on RU-vid of Tom and Mary messing around. Tom and Mary also attended events years later together. Tom, Liz and Ian Marter loved working together. Louise and Tom got off to a rocky start, because of how badly he missed Lliz, but talked things thru and now do Doctor Who audio adventures together. He also enjoyed working with certain writers. Tom is not perfect and will admit he had issues with some of the later writers and could have behaved better. Like Mayhew said though Tom could be one of the sweetest guys and they had some very good moments together. Tom's last year or two was rough for also because he was ill on and off and decided to leave a show and character he truly loved. He was feeling it physically and emotionally.

You know, every time I've talked about the 4th Doctor I failed to acknowledge his relationship with his Season 18 companions. And honestly, they were great. His father-son relationship with Adric in Keeper of Traken and Logopolis was beautifully done, and they played off each other so well. There isn't much to say about the 4th Doctor and Nyssa, as they didn't have a lot of interactions, but if the set photos are any indication, the behind the scenes relationship between Tom Baker and Sarah Sutton was quite good. From what we see of 4 and Nyssa on screen, I think that given more time they would have developed a sort of father-daughter relationship, which I would have loved to see. So yes, even though Nyssa and Adric only knew the 4th Doctor for a few serials (and less than one, in Tegan's case), they were great together and would have been a brilliant long-term TARDIS team.

In Season 19 he was just a whiny brat who was looked down on by everyone. In Season 18 he had a brilliant relationship with the Doctor. In my opinion they had a very sweet father-son relationship.
