Always loved this episode for the fact that it talks about depression in a very clever way. After all depression is the monster that no one else can see but you...and maybe a doctor

The writer of this episode, Richard Curtis wrote, "So - here’s the thing - the key reason I wrote this episode - was out of love for my sister Bindy. She was a gorgeous and brilliant person, 2 years older than me. She loved Vincent Van Gogh and life. She couldn’t have been more full of generosity and joy. But half way through her life she was hit by depression and intermittently it hurt her for the rest of her life. And a few years before this show, like Vincent, she took her own life. That was me trying to show Bin how glorious she had been in our lives - and how nothing could change that, taking her own life wasn’t a failure by her, or a rejection of all of us. It was, as they say on Love island, what it was."
@Temujin1206

Supposedly Bill Nighy wasn't even paid for this part, he loves Van Gogh so much he agreed to do it for free then improvised that entire speech about Van Gogh because that's how he genuinely feels about him and his work.

I love when Doctor Who tackles big issues like this. It's a hard-hitting issue wrapped up in a family show. I think it's so important that they still explain that Vincent committed suicide. Because depression isn't fixed like that... but that doesn't mean what Amy and the Doctor did was worthless.

+Juliette Reacts There's a quote I like from Spider Robinson's Callahan series: "Just as there are Laws of Conservation of Matter and Energy, so there are in fact Laws of Conservation of Pain and Joy. Neither can ever be created or destroyed. But one can be converted into the other." This is later shortened to "Shared Pain is lessened, shared joy increased - thus do we refute entropy" . The Doctor and Amy certainly converted some of Vincent's pain to joy, even if only for a short time. Btw I have been rewatching Band of Brothers on Sky and found your reactions to them the other day. It's a great show and your reactions are an excellent companion. Keep up the great work.

@ArlanKels
@ArlanKels 3 года назад
2 years later... And one of the things that might make this episode even sadder is that he only went to paint that church at that time because the Doctor was there. The Doctor had to go back, because he forced the painting to happen, which in turn means that Gogh was always taken to the future And seeing all that joy and happiness and then being thrust back into a horrible, sad life where nobody loved or respected him would've been enough to finally break him.
@jillt6748
@jillt6748 2 года назад
@@ArlanKels It's not true, though, that nobody loved him. He had a very, very strong ally in his brother, Theo. His brother was his connection to this world, despite all the pain and depression. His brother supported him throughout his life and loved him deeply. But the thing about depression is, that's not enough. If you have clinical depression, you could be surrounded by all your favorite things and people telling you how much they loved you, but it wouldn't matter. Depression lies and will tell you that things would be so much better for those loved ones if they didn't have to deal with you. Depression removes your ability to enjoy things that you love doing as well. Depression is an invisible monster, like the one Vincent, Amy and the Doctor fight in this episode. Only it's far, far more dangerous than this one.

@eirei0789
@eirei0789 6 лет назад
This episode definitely was not the best as a whole. The early to mid parts are just serviceable, the monster a fairly basic big creature type that kills people with violence (at a glance). But the last 10 minutes were probably some of the best piece of television ever made. The theme's that's just been lying in wait and under the surface pops out, sensitive subjects tastefully handled, while still building up the main characters, especially the Doctor. Of course, upon re-examination this episode was masterfully put together from start to finish. The invisible monster serves as an analogy of the hidden, invisible monster that is depression that only the people who suffer can see. Vincent portrayed a wide stream of emotions, having amazing emotional highs but also hitting rock bottom at one point, contrary to the popular misconception that depression means being lethargic and absent of life 24/7. The episode might not have been the most exciting or riveting throughout, but I doubt it would have hit as hard if it didn't have the buildup and character interactions that it had.

And then we studied Van Gogh during classes and every time I was thinking of this episode and it made me want to cry because... it's weird how this episode makes you feel close to who Van Gogh was as a human being, it's almost... beyond fiction. Anyway, there are very different styles of paintings that I prefer to Van Gogh's era and all, but knowing what he went through, what his life was like, the struggles and yet the beauty of his art, to me, it makes Van Gogh one of my favorite artists ever.

Two things have been proposed to cause Van Gogh's changes in visual style. Firstly, he had a bout of heart issues for which he was prescribed digitalis, a potent herbal remedy which when taken in high doses can cause xanthopsia, yellowing of the vision. Shortly after this he started using primarily yellow in his paintings. Later in life, he started painting more and more abstractly, as his depression raged on. A lot of swirls and halos, as in Starry Night. Lead was often used in paint at the time and a symptom of long-term lead poisoning is depression. Another is retinal swelling, causing halo effects around lights and swirling vision.

It's almost crazy that the guy who played Van Gogh also played the irish mob-boss who tortures the Punisher in Daredevil season 2. That dude has great range.

Just catching up on this, and well, I still can't watch this damn episode without crying. That moment of Vincent standing in the gallery, the speech in the background and the camera circling him is just incredible.

I come back to the reactions to this episode every few months just to weep all over again. The last ten or twenty minutes of this episode are my favorite 10/20 minutes of any television episode in human history

Finally you got to this episode! Finally! Btw. this episode of Doctor Who must've been sponsored by the Musée d'Orsay as their Van Gogh collection doesn't really contain all these most famous Vincent paintings, certainly not the Munich Sunflowers at the end.

Tony Curran did such a fine portrayal of Van Gogh. He was at once relatable but quirky, charming but affected, brilliant yet down-to-earth. His performance is noteworthy. Also something to mention is that Tony Curran and Bill Nighy were in Underworld together as Victor and Markus, two of the three vampire elders/leaders.

I'm so glad you guys liked this episode. It's one of my favorites. I think the monster is also a metaphor for depression. It's something that only you can see, always stalking you, and can be based on fear and anger.

this episode hit home for me personally, ive dealt with depression for most of my life and ive had a few failed attempts and i lost a good friend about 4 years ago because he succeed and it still hurts when it comes around that time of the year. personally im in a better place now but i still get hit with long periods from time to time , so i can connect to Vincent's character and Amy's emotional pull to feel like you didnt do enough and sometimes it doesnt matter how many things are going your way depression can still hit.

This is one of the Who episodes I wish I could watch again for the first time, along with Blink and Silence in the Library etc, but for a completely different reason. One of the most emotional and awesome episodes they've done to date.
