When you look at Clara's Mothers grave and see the date of her death........ 5th of March 2005. The date of the events of the episode "Rose". In other words, it is a possibility that she was killed by the autons in the mall where Jackie was since they both live in the same general area of London within Dr Who Cannon.
@@OlPalJoe isn't it all headcanon considering that both this episode and that episode in 2005 are pretty much written by fanboys I don't mean that to be mean I just find the fact that all the modern writers are Doctor Who fan boys is just fun
@@stanleydude3340 Yeah By the second doctor not a single member of the original production team remained William hartnel was the last But also I'm pretty sure that the BBC has only ever confirmed. Just when you think you're used to Matt Smith, he does something like this. The more I watch him, the more I appreciate his talent as an actor and as the Doctor.
Sorry, but I don't see why people think that. It's really nothing special. It's not even as good as his back the hell off speech from The Pandorica Opens.
@@npe9483 Still not as good. Music is pretty sub-par all season, especially here, emotion... not really, emotion only really appears in stories where the characters have personal stakes in the events, like Tennant in End of Time Part 2, the fact this being is so powerful, but defeated so easily kind of undermines the whole speech, and Matt's performance is actually pretty exaggerated throughout.
@@madrocts I mean exaggerated to the point of disbelief. I didn't honestly feel emotionally attached to anything he said, because he put way too much "look at the shit I've done" into it.
Personally, the rings of akhaten speech will forever be my favourite out of the entire series, just the pure rage and power of his voice gives me utter chills every time
@@monsterjunkie7773 mood. the clip of the speech is just as good as the whole scene bc there really is nothing else of value in the rest of the scene dslkfjsd. its really a wonder how they decided to follow up one of the greatest scenes in the show with... well... what it was followed up with
i memorized that speech word for word when it came out, and still was able to mouth it along now. i always felt that matt smith was the best actor to really show the "ancient man and a young boy in an adult's body" aspect of the character. this speech with the music really conveyed that very well. i still got chills watching it. and blind wave was unusually noisy during this episode. im still happy with their reactions tho. this was a great episode even if i dont like the 'clara's leaf saves the day' trope, i thought it was a great episode.
The Indoor Kites Smith is absolutely incredible. I thought Tennant and Eccleston were good, but then Smith came along and ...sorry fans...blew them outta the water. His writing was not always consistent but his acting is incredible. The speech is okay. The delivery is fantastic
I enjoy seeing the differences in what episodes the wider Doctor Who fandom love and what Blind Wave personally love. As they aren't in any kind of echo chamber they have authentically different reactions. They are way more positive about Season 7 than they were about the first couple of seasons of the show, and they clearly like this episode which a very noisy reactionary core of the fanbase hate and see as the point of no return for the show. It's like how they didn't care much for Midnight, Gridlock or Family of Blood but loved Daleks in Manhattan and Wedding of River Song. Their unique take on things is why I am a patreon supporter.
@@xxdavecz3811 People not sharing your opinion does not make them toxic, but attempting to alienate a group of people by calling them names, for not sharing an opinion, that is the very definition of toxic.
I actually love series 7 and I've been a long time fan. Sure, I can find some storytelling issues within a few stories (like with every season), but I think it was a great departure for the 11th Doctor overall and it's full of lore nods, lots of multi fan service, lots of well-intended love for the characters, there's two unique journeys, lots of mystery, lots of questions are answered and there's even space for new questions, there's epic and meaningful speeches and when I watched Rings of Akhaten for the first time, I got chills too. As a long time fan, I actually understand where they come from when they react. In fact, It's refreshing to see how open-mindedly Blind Wave approach every franchise they watch.
@@bakugan248 Raven *always* happens. There is no escaping it. No matter *what else* Literally the whole point. So once again, how are you people that ignorant.
I feel a little sorry for Eric haha, there probably are too many questions floating in the air for viewers at this point in the show: 1) What is Clara? How have their seemingly been three versions of her? 2) Who is this "lady in the shop"? Is it someone we already know or a new character entirely? 3) Was THE QUESTION just "Doctor Who?", why did the Silence want to kill him, are they ever going to explain what a "Trenzalore" is?
This was the first ever episode of Doctor Who that I watched. I stumbled across it on accident and then fell in love. Then I went crazy and bought all 9 series (at the time) on DVD and I am now diving into Classic Who. This episode started it all for me!
This is one of Matt Smith's strongest acting moments, imo. For a Doctor who always tried to hide his feelings behind a jovial demeanor, we got to see the real pain and heartbreak he carries, if only for a moment.
We never saw it enough imo. That makes me sad because by this point I had got rather attached to Smith & it crept up on me midway through S6. I have a lot more appreciation for him in hindsight by rewatching his episodes
Hooloovoo is indeed a fun word. From The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, by Douglas Adams, former Doctor Who script editor. The Hooloovoo is a super-intelligent shade of the color blue.
Pancake Tuesday is what other members of the Anglosphere call Shrove Tuesday, which marks the beginning of Lent and the 40 day run up to Easter Sunday. We commemorate the day by stuffing our faces with pancakes, and traditionally would then go many weeks eating a more restricted diet, giving up sugary snacks etc, although only Christians do that bit of it tbh, the rest of us just pick and choose!
One of the best speeches of all Doctor Who, imo. Which is really a crowning achievement for Matt Smith because there have been some really tremendous speeches in this show.
While I do think this episode is a bit light on plot (and what happened to all those people when their star disappeared?!) I do think it's absolutely beautiful in style, and both the speeches at the end get me every time. I tear up at both the Doctor's and Clara's speeches. And while controversial, I love them both. It was a joy to watch the crew react to this and enjoy it so much. Especially this season (seven) I'm finding myself enjoying it a lot more watching with the guys, which is fun. So many cool alien designs this episode! Glad they enjoyed that, as well as of course the epic/emotional speeches. And of course, glad they're continuing to like Clara. I have to say, I did laugh when Calvin pointing out that the Doctor following Clara around as a child is a tiiiiny bit creepy, because yes, I'd agree. It is. As a person who sang in a choir for a very long time, I also always liked this episode for its music. I honestly really like The Long Song. It makes me emotional as well. Can't wait to move forward in s7, especially to some of the episodes I'm less keen on, and see how my opinion has changed since last time I watched, and if my enjoyment will continue to be better while watching along with the crew! :D
I haven't watched season 7 since it came out and I really should! It's fun to get new perspectives on these contentious episodes. I wasn't too keen on Matt Smith in general so I really dismissed these eps when I first watched. I think that the song, while beautiful, was a little too loud here. But the payoff of its reuse in Time of the Doctor is marvelous.
The singing at the end always gives me chills. The song itself but also the way everyone joins in makes such an incredible sound to me, then top that with The Doctor's speech and I'm on the brink of tears.
I love the analogy of calling seemingly key points in an episode "flagpoles", this show really does a lot of foreshadowing which is awesome for a time travel show.
The sonic screwdriver isnt there to make sense, the clue is in its name. This isnt a hard science fiction show, its closer to fantasy and the screwdriver is just there to forward the plot.
I thought that at first too, but David Tennant did the same at the start of “Age of Steel” and that was plain stupid copout of a cliffhanger. Here, the tech is obviously audio-based, with all the singing and even a door opening at the sound of a song. So it makes sense the sonic screwdriver can counter the sonic waves of the Vigil. But there are other times the sonic definitely could do way too much. Hence why they invented the deadlock, the double, triple deadlock, RTD loved the deadlock, but Moffat invented the “sonic doesn’t do wood” which I like better.
@@michaeldeboer9940 I hate Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel, but no, you're wrong. The thing he used to kill the cybermen was the thing he took from the TARDIS.
So I am now liking this run of episodes between The Snowmen and Name of the Doctor much more than I remember thanks to Blind Wave, their reactions and reviews have been stellar on this show. Their best work in my opinion.
@@HowardTheDucksWong Nah I am sitting through every episode with them. I actually discovered on repeat viewings I much prefer this season to season 1 or 2 now.
A few things I wanted to point out. 1) Much of the Doctor's speech could be interpreted from a slightly darker angle. A parasite that thinks it's a god and longs for the lives of others? Do you remember this minisode (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OH4rsARaMI0.html )? The Doctor states that the reason he has companions is so that he can see the universe through their eyes. The Doctor understands this "god" so well because he sees a reflection of himself within it. 2) Pay attention to the music in this episode, especially during the Doctor's speech. And pay attention to the lyrics too. It might come back later, and the lyrics sung here add quite a bit when it does.
The thing with the Screwdriver in this Episode: They Sing open the Door, the guards shout to attack. Everything was Sound based, ofc his Sonic Screwdriver becomes OP in a situation like this ^^
I always loved how series 7 was so epic and different in tone! This second half is a such a journey full of secrecy and so much lore stuff, emotions and adventures,... I think you guys will have a great time and lots of your questions will be answered in due time ;)
Did anyone else thing that Clara’s Leaf speech undercuts the Doctor’s speech? I mean I get the point of it, infinite possibilities and all that but it almost seems like they said “Oh better remind everyone that Clara is special too!”, like they are laying how important she is pretty thick you know?
@@somedudeontwitterstalkedme3829 But we already she has something going on because she keeps meeting him through time. She's the clever girl. She is going to have plenty of episodes to show how amazing she is.
@@cartoonking1895 if that is enough for you to "Hate" a character as always that is your choice. This is the 2nd episode of this version of Clara every Companion gets the 2nd episode to show what they bring to the table Rose - The End of the World Martha - The Shakespeare Code Donna - The Fires of Pompei Amy - The Beast Below What they all have in common 1. The Doctor makes a call to save something the Companion helps them find the better path or solves it 2. It is the Companion's 2nd episode This is what people mean when they state the unfair "hate" thrust upon Clara, that only Donna got for her turn in "Runaway Bride", that Martha got because she replace Rose, that Rose got because she was a former Pop-Star, that Amy got because she was unknown and a former model. Clara had it worst then all of them
@@cartoonking1895 that is your right but it was the same for the other companions and people did not have an issue with it then. This is not about you, you have every right to feel however you feel about any character you wish I am merely pointing out that I think Clara gets a lot of unnecessary vitriol, she tends to get a lot of flack for things others have done and I was just pointing out several instances of that occurring. 13:14 yes, they were basically given full access to the BBCs prop library for this episode, theres a few robots and monsters from some children’s shows that made an appearance in this episode.
I think this episode has the greatest speech of all Doctor Who and Matt Smith delivers it so well. The singing in the background makes me tear up every time.
There was also a minisode before this one where the Doctor meet the young during his investigations. Ah and there's also a special poster made for this episode in a classic 80's style.
I can't believe there aren't more comments about this. Clara's leaf scene ruins that entire moment. If it weren't for that, this might have been my favorite episode of this series...
This episode was the episode that brought Matt Smith the closest its ever been to David Tenant in my heart as what it means to be The Doctor. The acting was superb :, )
Clara’s mum died March 2005 the same time Rose aired on TV which means she probably worked in the shop The Ninth Doctor blew up. So The Doctor killed her
I thought the shop had closed. All the employees had left, except Rose who was taking the lottery money down to Wilson. More likely killed by Autons later in episode 🙂
Awesome video! And this was an awesome episode! Fun fact....that's probably only fun to me but the actress who played Clara's mum actually auditioned for a role for one of our short films :D
It really annoys me that it took me this long to remember that series 7 is when _he_ appears. I’m not gonna spoil it, but the during last minute of Name of the... man I’m getting chills just remembering him.
The raptors from the dinosaur on a spaceship episode were the same models as the one in the tv show Primeval (which is great btw.) Greetings from switzerland
Considering the he's met her and seen her die twice before I would say him going into her past and seeing her grow up was creepy however it was also intelligence gathering.
Page One... The most important leaf in human history. The beginning of Clara Oswald. I love that the '101 Places To See' book was actually Ellie's originally and that she promised Clara that she would "always find her, even on the moon". Grumpy TARDIS doesn't like Clara LOL I would say this is MY favorite speech from Eleven. It just connects better with me than the others... and then Clara steps in to help him to defeat the Old God like the boss she is! I hearts Clara Oswald.
Brilliant ep this was too, i was going to tell u about the grave date if Aaron never, so am glad Aaron did his work on that, :) 💐 love a episode where you can sing along with,
while I'm not a fan of Matt I loved this episode, only to be wrecked by IT at the end, my hatred of IT is beyond words. We had a speech of heart wrenching fury, I'm not sure even my beloved Tom Baker could pull off, bare his heart for all to see, but its not enough, it needs a leaf. A. LEAF! Said hatred extends into series 8th and 9th too I might add, glad you enjoyed this though!
I think it’s hilarious they included the Hooloovoo (sp?) in this episode. I believe it was an alien described as a particularly intelligent shade of blue in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
Hi guys, there is also an Egyptian connection, IMO, Nefertiti was the main wife of the Pharaoh Akhenaten. This seems like a link to "Dinosaurs in a Spaceship". If you check out the Pharaoh & Nefertiti`s beliefs you`ll see what I mean. Also, the end of her story in that episode matched up with history. As in history, she suddenly ceased to be mentioned.
@@xxdavecz3811 whether it is a star or a parasite is irrelevant, fact is if it disappeared then the gravity well holding the system together also disappeared
Watching this episode for the first time was definitely memorable... And as the end credits came up, I turned to my boyfriend and asked "Did they just destroy the sun of a solar system?" to which he responded... "Well fuck, they did, didn't they? I wonder if they just killed off the whole solar system by getting rid of it"
Wondering if this interaction affects the Doctor's memory in any way. Did the parasite 'eat' some of his memories? Is that why he later seems to remember less of his lives than 10?
Is it possible that the car that almost hit Clara's dad is the same as the one that hit Rose's dad? I feel like I need to go back and rewatch those two episodes now.
Second incarnation was my fav as well. I wish they’d used her as the companion. Besides, we’d get strax that way 🙂. I have to rewatch this. I didn’t like it when I first saw it but these clips are making me question my first reaction.
The narrative thread -- left largely unspoken and to the viewers' imaginations -- about the destruction of this "god" is how it echoes back to the asteroid "worlds" in "A Good Man Goes To War" (S-6) and the opening sequence in "The Time of Angels" (S-5). When taken in order, the Doctor destroyed the god in TRoA, which gave rise to the at least the seedling order against him (eventually becoming The Silence) and events in AGMGtW, then to the museum/monastery in TToA. DW, as a series in the NuWho era, is full of all sorts of deliberately-left--to-the-viewers'-imaginations story threads and elements... this was one of the more subtle but also interesting, in that context.
FYI - Pancake Tuesday is a thing here in the UK. Is it in the US too? It's Shrove Tuesday, connected to Easter. Last day of eating bad things before giving them up for Lent. It's coming up next Tuesday!
If you love the song, you should really check out the "Doctor Who at the Proms 2" version from 2013 performed by Kerry Ingram (Shireen in Game of Thrones). It's blows the episode version completely away.
