The Master was previously executed by Daleks on Skaro, so this was why the sudden look of terror on her face when realisiing where she was

"Davros. My name is Davros" - BEST COLD OPENING EVER! An amazing start to one of my personal favourite Who stories ever in my personal favourite season of Modern Who. Also, welcome back the dreaded 'To Be Continued' sound Eric!

I love how the Doctor plays "Pretty Woman" when he sees Clara (and Missy's reaction when she realizes it's not for her), cause, let's be honest, he's just playing what we're all thinking.

This is a good two parter!!. You see The Doctor has now embraced his “idiot in a box “ revelation ..his hair is longer , his clothes are less formal and he allows his sillier side to show more ..he’s rediscovered who he is . The kid being Davros at the beginning was a hell of a shocker when I originally saw this and that is indeed Peter playing the guitar . Also , I haven’t seen the Master in Classic Who but out of Michelle Gomez and John Simm , I think Gomez takes the cake .

That's my favourite cold open of any tv show ever I swear. "I'm so into Missy and him being on the same side" same same same same! They do that quite a lot in 70s episodes too. Some of their best moments come when they're working together, when the fact that they are ultimately friends shines through everything else.

*Capaldi* was in that band with *Craig Ferguson.* Which just blows my mind.

I really the love old punk rocker the Doctor becomes this season. His hair and outfit really shows how he's mellowed out

I love the way Missy is played, it's such an amazing character. The way she turns on a dime to be evil when she wants something is nuts!

Favourite moment of this episode had to be Missy's reaction to the reveal that they were on Skaro of all places. We always see the doctors reaction to the Daleks, we even caught glimpses of other time lords reaction to them during the Day of the doctor special! But to see the Master, Missy's eyes widen and that utter look of horror, despair, hopelessness appear on her face is a proper, True showing of just how terrifying Daleks are no matter who you are.

The 11th Doctor was on Skaro back in series 7 but the whole planet was in ruins and abandoned. Missy says in this episode that they rebuilt it

Ah, I love Missy. Love the way Michelle Gomez acts and moves. Next episode's got some good stuff too. And yeah the Doctor looks cooler with his rockstar look and his hair is getting bigger like Jon Pertwee's did. Big fluffy and awesome. :D Yeah I'm in a weird mood this evening. Let's admit it... we've been waiting for months for this journey to finally begin

To answer your question about Skaro: yes! We did see Skaro at the beginning of "Asylum of the Daleks" before the Doctor was kidnapped and brought to the Dalek ship. At that time, it appeared to just be in ruins. The Doctor was, basically, "summoned" to Skaro by a woman who said she needed his help rescuing her daughter. Turns out she was a Dalek puppet and he was captured (and then, Amy and Rory were captured on Earth). And just because you guys were wondering about the circumstances surrounding Clara sticking around for season 9, from my understanding (and what I've heard in interviews), Jenna Coleman had told Steven Moffat fairly early on that she planned to leave after the Christmas special so, the episode was written with that in mind. Some people think she was meant to leave after "Death in Heaven" but, I don't think that was ever seriously going to happen or, at least, Steven Moffat didn't really expect it to happen (frankly, you don't write a "Gift of the Magi" scenario and not plan for it to pay off at Christmas). Anyway, after season 8 had been filmed, Jenna Coleman realized that she wasn't ready to leave Clara and wanted to do another season with Peter Capaldi. Since it hadn't been officially announced that she was leaving yet, she told Steven Moffat she changed her mind and he adjusted the Christmas episode accordingly (which I am very pleased about). Honestly, I think Jenna had learned from Matt Smith's mistake. I know that Matt regrets leaving Doctor Who when he did and I could tell from interviews at the time that he was already having regrets before he'd even filmed his last episode (I think he went through with it in large part because he felt obligated to stick by his word). Jenna, obviously, would have witnessed that happening and I think it might have been a factor in helping her not be afraid to admit she changed her mind and wanted to stay longer.

I would like to pay my respects to William Hughes. I have recently discovered that he passed away last year. He played the boyhood incarnation of The Master from Doctor Who.

19:20 Eric is right. The Doctor was on Skaro at the beginning of that episode. It was the same episode the disguised Daleks were also introduced.

Short version (lol) - The Kaleds and Thals fought a war of attrition for thousands of years - it started off with high-tech stuff like lasers, but devolved all the way down to bows and arrows as both sides used up the planets resources and smashed each others industry. The survivors ended up huddle in two domed cities - unable to stay outside too long thanks to the damage they'd done to the planet with the nukes, chemical and biological weapons they'd used on each other. Both sides had begun mutating and Davros accelerated the Kaled mutation to find their final form - and then developed a one-blob tank for that form to get around in. The Thals meanwhile built one final rocket to smash the Kaled dome and when the Kaleds got cold feet about the development of the "Daleks", Davros told the Thals how to destroy the Kaled city - preventing the Kaleds from stopping his Dalek experiments. Davros then sent his newly built Daleks to wipe out the Thal city. The fourth Doctor then buried the Daleks in Davros' bunker. The Thals who survived lived on the surface and eventually mutated all the way back to humanoid again while the Daleks in their metal shells built themselves a new city to live in.

Being such a huge fan of Claira Oswald, I am ashamed to admit I am eternally grateful for Jenna Coleman's contributions in the movie "A room at the Top".

I'm so hyped for this series. It's definitely up there with my favourites - and so is this series opener! But another reason I have been super excited for it is ERIC'S REACTION TO /THAT/ SOUND. It was glorious. (And it's only going to get better). Also, while I'm super excited to see the guys watch this series for the first time, I'm also really hyped to see Aaron rewatching it? It's going to be good. For an episode that's as full of stuff as this one is, I think it's impressive the amount of stuff it manages to pull off (imo). It has callbacks galore, Missy, the Daleks, Davros, character beats, Skaro... So much. But then again, it's so much to enjoy, isn't it? Reaction was amazing. Everything from the Davros reveal (!!) to Missy coming back (I love how much they love her because I love her to bits) to the Skaro reveal - and then all the absolutely hilarious/touching moments (the hug! Pretty Woman! Dudes!) that managed to get into this reaction (that's a lot in 10 minutes). The Doctor/Clara/Missy interactions are still so good. Also, this has made me rediscover one of my favourite pieces from the DW OST - Missy's Theme, Extended version. It plays here a few times, most noticeably when Clara and Missy are talking on the square. Love it so much. And yes, Peter Capaldi is playing the guitar. He's having so much fun. Aaaah. I'm so excited. For this and for the entire series ahead.

Doctor Who Season 9 is the best season in the new Who. All episodes in this season are good to very good or outstanding apart from one episode. Right now without referring the Internet, I can tell you all the episode names/description in this season, and I watched this about a year back. 2 daleks, 2 lake, 2 unit episode (I know the species name, not naming it to avoid spoilers), 1 eye dust, 2 Arya stark, and of course who will forget the last 3.. If anyone doesn't like Peter Capaldi at all, after this season they will. He might not be my favourite but boy what a season this was

In regards to the discussion at the end about how things would change if the Daleks had never been created - absolutely everything would be different. The Doctor would not be the same person at all. He has said at least once in the show that it was the First Doctor's encounter with the Daleks that turned him into the man he is now, and Missy even makes a subtle reference in this episode by saying "this is where it all started". The Doctor's meeting with the Daleks and their endless war against eachother made him into the hero he is, without them the universe would be very different

The kid who played Davros is actually the same kid who played the young Doctor in Listen. The kid Calvin is talking about from The Sound of Drums actually unfortunately died in real life not too long ago

So Joey Price played the young Davros but the young master looking into the schism was played by William Hughes who sadly took his own life aged just 20 years old.

Really wish you guys would have watched the “Series 9 Prologue” followed by “The Doctor’s Meditation”. It’s the best way to start this episode and season.

The Doctor wasn't a little girl, he's always been a guy. He couldn't have regenerated as a child because he wasn't a Time Lord at that point, he was just a regular Gallifreyan

Skaro was seen briefly in Matt Smith's run, Eric is right, and it was the first time we saw it in any form since the classic series. The Planet was in ruin after the time war and essentially abandoned by the Daleks. In the episode they just watched it's been rebuilt to its former glory and resembles what it looked like in the classic era, which is why Missy was saying "They rebuilt it, brought it back". Also The Asylum was a completely different planet under Dalek control.

My favorite season as Doctor 12 is my 2nd favorite doctor and Clara being my favorite companion.

There’s an 8 year gap in between this episode and Last Of The Time Lords I highly doubt the same actor that played The young Davros is The young Master

The races on Skaro were originally the Thals and the Dals. By the time of the 4th Doctor, this was retconned to the Thals and the Kaleds. The Kaleds (some of them) transformed themselves into the Daleks (Dalek is an anagram of Kaled).
