So, Paula and Katrina have seen Clara go over the top, and beyond her breaking point... Time for the Doctor to, this season... what a ride. That said, episode 1 was fairly messy and all over the place, baiting and switching the audience almost cheaply.

There is a great interview on the Craig Fergusian show with Capaldi. They were both in a band, they discuss the time they were both tripping Acid independently and meet up. Basically it's not an interview, just 2 old friends catching up, and it's brilliant.

When the Doctor begs for Clara's life. His utter helplessness. For the Doctor, that helplessness sometimes turns into loss. That loss begets grief, which transforms into rage. The most violent and terrifying thing in all the universe is the rage of the last timelord. Entire civilizations tremble before it...

lol... Capaldi playing the opening riff of "Oh, Pretty Woman" when he looks up and sees Missy. Or wait, maybe he was seeing Clara? No, it was Missy. As a long-time Whovian (since the mid 70s) it absolutely chilled my bones when that kid said his name, the first time I saw this episode. Even now, after many viewings, it still does. This is a great season. As always, I look forward to your reactions.

Not sure - I think ‘Pretty Woman’ was for Clara because as Missy enters he plays a wah-wah-ed version of ‘Mickey’ (the ‘Hey Missy’ tune). Question is - where did he get the wah-wah pedal? Answer - skillz!

So here at last we get the most comprehensive explanation of how The Master/Missy is somehow inexplicably always able to come back from the seemingly very dead - “Back. Not dead. Big surprise. Never mind”. Also I’m pretty sure that if you check the Doctors amplifier on the tank, it’s from Magpie Electricals. I’m also pretty sure that ‘good’ as pronounced by Missy/Michelle is ‘guid’!
@ftumschk

Yes, Michelle Gomez uses the Scots for "good", which is indeed spelt and pronounced "guid".

“Today I’ll be talking to you out of the square window” probably won’t mean much to US viewers but will resonate with British viewers who watched ‘Playschool’, a kids TV programme where each day we went through a differently shaped shaped window in a cartoon house. (If you think that sounds nuts you should check out ‘In the Night Garden’ where I’m sure the scriptwriters are ‘on something’!).

I loved this episode when it was first on, especially getting the amazing Julian Bleach back as Davros (which was somehow kept a complete secret!). We also got literally EVERY type of Dalek from all through the history of the show! As you two also watch Star Trek, did you recognise the homage in this episode? The shuttle taking the Doctor to Davros not only looks very much like the inside of a Type 6 shuttle from TNG (Season 5 onwards) but they even use the warping stars outside the window too. Finally, I loved how they achieved Sarff’s slithering movement by having the actor on a hoverboard!😂👏

Young Davros was such a surprise when he first showed up in the episode completely different from the man he would become their is a set of audio stories which I admit I haven't heard, but anyway, the audio stories are called I Davros and they tell the story Davros' childhood to a young man in his 30s and it tells of how he ended up in his chair. As I said I haven't heard it, I have only heard snippets which have been animated it's quite a nice story from what little I did hear, I would recommend it but if you two are like me and simply cannot sit and concentrate just listening to audio while trying to imagine what is going on then the audio stories I Davros and many others by Big Finish probably aren't for you two. Anyway looking forward to the next reaction!

I love the contrast between the two showrunners and their approaches to opening episodes. Russell always kicked things off with a relatively small scale comedic romp with a heavy dosage of camp. By contrast, Steven is like "eh, fuck it. Let's start things off with a bang and throw our audience into the deep end." I love the opening, and I love the ending, but the stuff in between mostly feels like filler, and in hindsight makes the majority of this episode feel rather insubstantial. There's stuff I like in the middle, namely most of Missy's scenes, as we get to explore her and the Doctor's relationship in a bit more detail beyond them just being enemies, and Michelle Gomez sells the hell out of the character and her role as the unreliable ally who might either help you or disintegrate you for laughs. That said, a lot of the scenes during this part lack any kind of momentum, throwing various characters and locations at the audience in an attempt to hide how little story there is in this episode. On top of that, there's quite a few moments of comedy that fail to land during this episode (Missy tickling the Dalek's...ahem, balls is a quite misjudged moment), UNIT are once again made to feel utterly useless, Clara doesn't end up getting very much to do, the Doctor's guitar concert is loads of fun, but the gags and puns do grate after a while, and the whole "The Doctor is going to die" thing feels like a plot point that's been done to death at this point in the Moffat era. Still, "The Magician's Apprentice" has the benefit of starting well and ending well. The cold open is one of my favourites in the entire series, it's dark and atmospheric, the Hand Mines are a brilliantly creepy visual and concept, and the reveal of the child's identity is a moment that is played perfectly, with Capaldi's performance and the direction of Hettie McDonald (returning from "Blink") selling the moment perfectly. And then there's everything that happens once the story *actually* begins...33 minutes in. The revelation of Skaro is a perfect scene, with both Capaldi and Gomez acing the characters' sense of pure fear (seriously though, how often do we see the Master genuinely scared?), and Murray Gold reusing his Dalek theme from the series 4 finale was the perfect touch. Also returning from series 4 is Julian Bleach as Davros, toning down the screeching megalomania to deliver a much more unsettling and understated performance. The buildup to Clara's "death" is masterfully done, with Jenna Coleman's silent performance, the sinister background music, and Davros' insanely chilling speech doing a masterful job at elevating the tension. And Capaldi's depiction of the Doctor's grief immediately afterwards is phenomenal, you truly get the sense that the guy has become overcome with grief and rage, and it makes the cliffhanger where it looks like he might actually shoot the young Davros in the face all the more intense. After most of the episode was spent wasting time of superfluous nonsense, the final 15 minutes bring things home, and leave you on tenterhooks, just waiting to see how we're going to get out of this mess...and it's only episode 1! Also, surprised neither of you connected the title to The Sorcerer's Apprentice. You know, the story about a young magician who creates an army of inhuman servants that fuck things up for everyone, and how the young man is unable to control his creations?
@iansmith4023
@iansmith4023 2 года назад
You've admirably made all the points I was going to make. :) This episode is essentially a 20 minute prelude to next week's episode; padded out with storylines which are not only introduced and then summarily dropped,but which make no sense whatsoever. The last twenty minutes are great,though. The scene where Davros plays back the key moments from his,and the Doctors, past...gives me shivers!

She's an incredible villain and as discussed it's Michelle Gomez's performance that makes it all the more better/complicated. I felt the same about John Simm's version of the Master.

@@booradley8895 Missy is an example of what is wrong with Time Lords - it's what made the Sixth Doctor so dismissive of them - they've had uncounted millennia of being the unregulated center of the universe, and it has made them corrupt and uncaring. Missy didn't HATE the guy she killed, he just absolutely didn't matter to her with his stupid little lifespan. He was just useful to her by dying. And it was fun. Basically, she stood on a bug.
