Great video, but so much fun to hear you mentioning about how 'I didn't need anything like the internet as a child', remembering playing with my electronic toys in the 70's and having my dad say 'we made our own fun when I was a boy, I made things out of wood for myself'. I imagine this will echo through time (and relative dimensions..etc) , todays child will say 'we didn't have the holographic interface when I was young, we made do with the internet!' and so on.

I agree, it’s sad really that kids today won’t experience that, in the same way we did as kids, when I have one I do plan to make them play outside as much as possible, I miss playing in the street and not being allowed back in until dark except for meals aha

I'm not defending it, but at the end of the day, Jon was just doing a job and he probably didn't think it would be seen by a wider audience and certainly not analysed over a decade after he died.

JNT got in a tizzy about Peter Davison's agent bringing those to hand out to people working on the programme (rehearsals I think) some months earlier, because he reckoned all merchandise should be seen by the production office first. Given he reckoned a Terileptil on the cover of the monthly magazine was "indecent" he must've had a fit at the sight of the Doctor's crotch-lightning bolt!

I actually started working with Jon Pertwee around this time and I never knew this existed! Wow. This is such a surreal experience for me. As a fan in the U.S. during the first wave of Doctor Who fandom, we pretty much got the leftovers from the late 70's merchandising. I had one of the first Doctor Who specific dealer's tables at SF conventions in 1981 & 1982 and all I could get were some of the Tom Baker action figures, a talking K-9 that I wish I still had and this weird thing called a TARDIS Tuner. It was an AM radio that had a bunch of flashing lights and made a lot of sounds, all of them loud and annoying. The ads for the toys after the relaunch is like watching my childhood from an alternate Universe. Seeing ads on TV for Doctor Who toys the way we were marketed for G.I. Joe's is the childhood I wish I grew up in. As for the end, well, nobody rides for free!😂 As an old friend of mine likes to say, it was another time.

@akakjb

@@time-spacevisualiser I don't think I would. I found the talking K-9 to be obnoxious but that's mostly because I came to truly hate how he eventually got used. I'm actually kind of fond of the tin beast now. I liked how they used him in the SARAH JANE series. As a toy, it really was great. I loved the little plastic record that sat inside the battery bay. You could flip it over so he could say more stuff. But that TARDIS Tuner, man, it was brutal. Nearly every con I took it to wound up nicknaming it "Annoyatron 3000".

Great commentary, lads! It might have been mentioned by someone else already, but I think the Hamlet cigar bit was actually a skit from a comedy programme in the early 80s, as I have vague memories of it - something like Alas Smith & Jones (Mel Smith and Griff Rhys Jones from Not The Nine O'Clock News). My mum actually used to work for Zanussi, although not until the early 90s. I'm curious when that first one is from. Pre-decimal currency puts it pre-February 1971. Although the Doctor being Troughton would put it in the late 60s. It's in colour though, and ITV I believe only went colour in November 1969, which was months after Troughton's last episode, and when they'd have been starting to promote the Pertwee era. Although I guess in the minds of the kids, Troughton was still the Doctor. Interesting that he was wearing that hat though, considering he only wore that in his early stuff, in 66/67.

Weird having Jon Pertwee as Dr Who in the early 80s - but I do recall that at that point in time there was a huge push to return to the earlier permissive society circa 1970 - 74 ish. And he was still famous due to Worzel Gummidge. Lots of TV programs and films featured nakedness at the time. Streaking in public was a thing. And sex was being normalized - rather than hidden in the background like the 1950s. Live shows like OTT had multiple late night breasts and more on show. Pubs began putting on live strip shows in the afternoon. Sex comedies had been a thing since the late 60s. So it might seem dated now. But at the time it was deemed perfectly normal - for better or worse. Edit; OTT was the late night adult version of Tiswas.

At the time of the Peter Davison pans advert he would probably have been married to Sandra Dickinson in real life... and if you think that outfit of his was odd then check him out in the Tomorrow People in 1975's "A Man For Emily" (Emily being played by Sandra Dickinson!). There were a whole string of Hamlet cigar adverts where the payoff was always having the cigar was the answer to relaxing when faced but a bad event... the famous one is the golfer taking loads of strokes tring to get out of a bunker and you just hear the music come up and the cigar smoke rising from inside the bunker. The original Dalek helmet/suit was available in the Hartnel 60s era and had a plastic floor length PVC cape hanging down from it - according to an interview where Toyah Wilcox first developed her love of PVC. That last line certainly was a surprise even for 1981!

I had one of the Dalek "voice changer" helmets. I thought I'd be able to actually do a Dalek voice but nope, barely a warble. Very disappointing.

I'm guessing Jon Pertwee only agreed to say that line because it was a corporate video, never intended to be seen outside of Zanussi corporate training sessions. No-one in that era foresaw corporate videos being shared for ironic laughs over "the interwebs" decades later :) And, no, that kind of thing wasn't acceptable, not even in the 80s. We had "alternative comedy" by then, which took the piss out of that kind of "working man's club" humour - all casual sexism and racism - as a relic of the previous decade. It was already seen as "your dad's comedy."

The ventriloquist doll in Talons of Weng Chiang scared me. For particilarly tense scenes (in other episodes) I would run from the lounge to the dining room and back again (it was the same room effectively with sliding double doors dividing them that were usually left open) just to burn off the adrenaline. I didn't hide behind the sofa, I fled and then had to run back again to find out what happens next. I was lucky because my childhood was in the 70s when the music was still scary. In the 80s the music had no interest in being creepy and mysterious, it just wanted to be spacey and whimsical. Also, bear in mind, Doctor Who monsters were usually at their scariest before you could see them; the show was often good at building suspense.

I'd hate to think Terry Nation signed off on a cigar smoking Dalek (though being the 1960s he was probably a smoker himself).

6d. Ahhhh.... The joys of pre 1971 pricing. That would be something like 5p in todays money.

The John pertwee advert was never shown on public TV it was a private corporate advert, it would never have got through the censors back in the 80s, be a different story now when you see what Dr who has turned into.
