One of my favs. Suranne Jones did such a magnificent job as the Tardis with the brilliant Gaiman script.

Nephew wasn't supposed to be an Ood - it was a result of budget constraints. Gaiman is a freaking genius - taking parts of the lore and re-forming them in unexpected ways that don't destroy the original meaning but enhances the lore

Yet it explains so much! Like rewatching when Rose gets back home a year late, it’s because the Doctor absolutely had to be there a year later for some important business going down. And perhaps the TARDIS DIDN’T pop up with the Doctor during that mess with the Children of Earth, because she could foresee Captain Jack taking care of it. (Though a part of me still wants to know how the Doctor would have stomped the 456.)

Probably the best line of the episode. (maybe of the entire show!) The only one I liked more was . . . "What makes you think I would EVER give YOU back?" Less funny, but very profound! (it even had the barest hint of threat in there, like an obsessed girlfriend or something.)

When this first aired and she greeted him with "Goodbye! Not goodbye. What's the other one?" I expected it to end with her saying "Hello" to him, but I was never ready for it to be so emotional. This episode wrecks me every time.

This is a beautiful, beautiful episode. I love how Amy says, when the Doctor introduces Idris as the TARDIS and a woman, “Did you wish really hard?” In relation to, “The only water in the forest is the river” - Time will tell, it always does. 🙂

The police box is not the normal form of the TARDIS it's meant to change shape and blend in its surroundings wherever it lands it got stuck as a police box because the chameleon circuit got stuck and the doctor never got around to repairing it and he likes it.

The TARDIS is an obsolete, decommissioned line of Gallifrean Time Capsules called a "Type 40". (and is the last one of that model left in existence because the Doctor stole it before it got decommissioned.) MOST generations of Time Capsules, including the Type 40, have the ability to blend in with their surroundings via what is called a Chameleon Circuit. Basically, as it rematerializes, it scans the surroundings of the landing zone & takes on a form that is suitable with the enviroment. The TARDIS's chameleon circuit shorted out (or jammed) when it landed in 1963 London England on Sol-3, as it took on the form of a Police Telephone Box. Now, it is "stuck" in that form. The Doctor DID make an attempt or two to fix the circuit (with very limited success) before deciding it was do big of a hassle for such a small benefit, and left it alone.

DOCTOR: You know, since we're talking with mouths, not really an opportunity that comes along very often, I just want to say, you know, you have never been very reliable. IDRIS: And you have? DOCTOR: You didn't always take me where I wanted to go. IDRIS: No, but I always took you where you needed to go. … finally explained, and it's awesome.
@wendyheatherwood

It does put a different context on all those times the TARDIS misses a target date by a few months or years only to arrive right before some kind of invasion or disaster Like the time the Doctor tries to return Rose a few hours after she left with him, but arrives months later, shortly before a spaceship crash lands. It's like she starts taking him where he wants to go only to spot something more important in the neighbourhood and takes a last minute detour.

@@wendyheatherwood or else he is riding in a machine specifically designed to detect unsanctioned space time anomalies. Like, idk, alien incursions or technology that just shouldn't exist then and there. A machine built by a race who jealously patrol the time vortex, who chase down potentially dangerous timelines before they occur, and who generally police the entire universe from beginning to end, literally eternally in search of this stuff... A machine disguised as a box with the word Police written all over it! Which always takes him, funnily enough, "where he needs to go..." Like magic ;)

this is such a great episode - the writing, the performances, the design & execution - it's one of those treasured episodes i can watch again and again. i am sure someone will have posted this before - the tardis' 'chameleon circuit' is broken so instead of merging into its surroundings it is stuck in 'police box' mode. a basic, non-camouflaged tardis has a metallic, cylindrical appearance - not anywhere near as aesthetically delightful as miss idris. thanks, as ever, for a great reaction!!

As soon as you see auntie and uncle you can tell it’s got to be a Neil Gaiman episode 😄. The look inside Amy’s head at her fears was really good and quite chilling. It was nice to see the old TARDIS console room again. Edit- regarding the TARDIS being non linear in thinking. Remember Bad Wolf: Rose and the energy of the TARDIS were kind of a hybrid. And Bad Wolf spoke of seeing all of time and space at once.

Suranne Jones, who played Idris/Human TARDIS in this episode, is one of our most well-loved actresses in the UK. She's brilliant and has had an extensive acting career so far, including Doctor Foster and Gentleman Jack. Her first major role was as Karen Phillips (later McDonald) in Coronation Street, which is our longest-running TV soap opera in the UK. She was in Coronation Street from about 2000/2001 to 2004. Karen was mental as a character, so playing a human carnation of the TARDIS would have been second nature for Suranne. :')

The Tardis is meant to be able to change its outside form depending on where it lands. What makes this possible is something called the chameleon circuit. But apparently the circuit got broken, and it has remained stuck in police box form.

Neil Gaiman is such a brilliant writer. I like the idea that this obsolete model TARDIS saw the Doctor as an opportunity, "stole" them, and ran away. All the while, allowing the Doctor to think that they were stealing the TARDIS. Suranne Jones' performance was fabulous. I'd have liked to have seen her as the 12th or 13th Doctor.

Hi FWR, originally, the idea was that the Tardis would change to blend into it`s environment in every story. However, budget constraints meant that they decided they would have to stick with the beautiful blue Police box. Starting in the 1st story, the 1st Dr. W.H., questions why it does not change after they leave their (Spoilers) original location. Throughout Classic Who it is mentioned, that the Tardis he borrowed had a faulty Chameleon circuit, hence no change occurs. He does try to repair it, but as you can guess, you just can`t get the parts, normally. Shame he didn`t have time to look around more in this story, but then who would want to change that true-blue box.

Shame it wasnt a 2 parter, it was a really cool script and a lot of it was cut. The Ood was used to save $, it was originally a monster made up of random creature parts. There was supposed to be a scene where Idris turns off all the wrecked Tardis chameleon circuits and all the spaceships turn into cabinets

I won't give you any serious spoilers, but this is something you NEED to know. In a future Episode the Doctor wants to go to the Amazon Jungle. Just before the TARDIS arrives, it gets damaged by a force that shouldn't be there. When the TARDIS arrives it's not a jungle, it's just a forest, too many trees missing. The TARDIS needs some Ultron Engegy but there is none on Earth. Amy is thursty so goes to take a handful of water from the river just as the Doctor starts scanning with his screw driver. He yells at Amy don't drink it. It turns out it's a river of Ultron Energy. The Doctor has to Investigate.
