As amazing as that part is, look at her expression when she hears "4 and half billion years." Her face hardly changes at all, but you can see in her eyes she didn't hear anything said after that - she was so stunned. So subtle, and then how she turns away and hesitates half-way before turning to face the Doctor.

Man, this scene makes me tear up every time I stumble across it. Everyone's performance is spot-on, Jenna's in particular, and that look of devastated shock and incomprehension when she hears how long the Doctor was trapped, with that subtle roll of the camera to suggest her emotional disorientation - just, kudos to the direction here. And the Doctor's quick, tense glance to see how she's taking it - oh, my heart. Plus the blue lighting is so spooky and perfectly suited to the Doctor's furtiveness, his desperate scrabbling around and evasiveness and inability to articulate his feelings, and to Clara's deepening sense that things have gone horribly wrong. Her trying to master herself enough to confront the Doctor and make him tell the truth (always a slippery business between them) is so beautiful, as is her refusal to let him derail her when she decides to stop the bullshit and just say it. The POV pulling away to allow them their privacy is brilliant. I'm grateful the show chose to leave it to our imagination. And Capaldi - oh my God. His quicksilver expressions, with all the brusqueness and denial on the surface and the emotional panic underneath, his darting eyes, his baffled insistence on the obvious ("You. I had to find a way to save you") and his plaintive, almost childlike whisper "I had a duty of care" because he doesn't even seem to understand that this compulsion is about love, a love that's in the process of destabilizing the universe - is it any wonder it makes me cry? Twelve crazed by Clara's loss and four billion years of torture will never stop breaking my heart. He doesn't even realize how out of control he is and how absurd it is that Clara has to force him to stop and listen and accept the reality, which is a love neither of them has admitted out loud and a mistake that can't be fixed.

Just brilliant acting from these two. Jenna Coleman has so much emotion in her eyes, the horror she feels when she learns of the 4 billion years of torture, her love for the doctor and her realisation of how much he loves her. On Capaldi's part, he manages to act exactly like he would in every other episode, lighthearted, witty, and manic, and yet he just shifts the tone ever so slightly so you can tell something is seriously wrong with his headspace.

@MANJYOMETHUNDER111
@MANJYOMETHUNDER111 7 лет назад
The reason he said that was because he can tell when he's traveled through the time vortex and cheated his way out of waiting like normal people for time to pass. It was his way of saying that there was no outside source of time travel, he'd been manually moved, second by second, through time as normal. There are moments where it becomes obvious that there were cycles, like when he saw copies of his clothes and left his own clothes in the exact same positions. Moffat also clarified after the episode aired that he remembers every cycle that happened to him inside the dial, his memories of each cycle being added into his brain as he escaped. He already knew he'd been in a cycle well before then, however. When he wrote the word 'bird' at the beginning of the maze, it was a message to himself, letting himself know that he was in a cycle.

@@FacePimpd It also threw the Doctor's fantastic journey in Heaven Sent out of the window, and disrespected Clara's final words for the Doctor. "Heal yourself, You have to. You cannot let this turn you into a monster. So, i'm not asking you for a promise, i'm giving you an order. You will not insult my memory, i will die and no one else here or anywhere will suffer" The main antagonist of Heaven Sent was grief itself, it was the Doctor trying to overcome the guilt and depression that came from her death. The seemingly endless cycle of doing the same routine over and over, nothing changing and the person you love never coming back. It teaches everyone that you can break free from this cycle, and you will move on eventually. It's always possible. It seems like eternity, but you will find happiness again, you will find home. That's one of the many, many reasons as to why Heaven Sent is perfect. But the next episode throws this out of the window by allowing the Doctor to kill someone (Yes, Timelord Regenerations do count. A lot of Time Lords, including the Doctor, would rather die than regenerate. Heaven Sent goes into a lot of detail about how Time Lords die properly.) and just getting Clara back. I see people justifying the decision to make The Doctor forget Clara as that he would never be able to move on, but as i said, Heaven Sent was all about moving on from grief. Yes Hell Bent has some very, very good scenes like this one and Yes i loved Jenna Coleman's performance as Clara. Hell Bent is a very good episode by itself, probably in my top 20 Doctor Who episodes. Heaven Sent and Hell Bent cannot exist together. Either one would have been the perfect finale to follow after Face the Raven, but not both of them.

@CinJyxxe
@CinJyxxe Год назад
@@sibby84 I agree that it was frustrating that it turned into the Clara Show for a while, but in a way, I think that was part of the point of the Hybrid Prophecy. The writers have suggested they always considered the pairing of Clara and The Doctor as the Hybrid, and Clara was by far the most competent companion that The Doctor ever had. I feel like they really needed to cement her ability to stand up as an equal to The Doctor for them to bother with such a grandiose prophecy about the Hybrid, so looking back on it, it makes sense that she'd be around for so long and play such a huge role in the show. Even now, I feel like she's the single most important companion The Doctor has had.

Such an underrated episode. Look at the reverance they show Clara when she says “Stay back!”. Because she’s a mortal with barely seconds to live. And they’re immortal and their immortality has turned them into monsters. It makes the Time Lords willing to torture a man for billions of years and treat death and life like playthings. It changed Ashildr into Mi. It created Missy. It’s why the Doctor told Mi that they need the mayflies. It’s why the Doctor had to forget. It’s why he needs companions. Ironically, Clara died because she tried to be more like the Doctor. And he even says, the reason he gets away with it is because he’s more dureable. She’s not. She’s mortal.

This is the purest, simplest expression of love; that one does not quit on the other, ever. That's what is seen here, with Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman using all their skills, not just the dialogue, to get that message across. Jenna can get more across with her eyes alone than many actors, and she has that face you want to look at for as long as possible. That look of utter astonishment, trying to comprehend. Peter, when he drops the gruffness, does much the same with either so few words or a full monologue. Four and a half billion years. For you. Add Murray Gold's music for the Clara character, and you have magic. These two worked so well together, you hated to see them part, but Jenna was off soon to play Queen Victoria, so both gave it their best here. To borrow from another episode, when Capaldi leaves: "Hate is always foolish. Love is always wise". A simple lesson, yet so difficult to learn.

This is proof that the 12th Doctor was the best. If Clara was travelling with the 13th, 11th, 10th, 9th or any doctor from the classic series he would have forgotten about Clara 2 minutes after the crow took her out. People often talk about the love of the 10th and Rose but they forget that it was his idea to trap her in the parallel world. Then he lied to her saying that he could never go to the parallel world again. But when she got out, he took her back

Now granted there are some stories that are better than others, some i could rewatch countless times and others i can skip over. But they are all amazing in their own right. I never understood peoples hatred for Clara, i thought she was a wonderful character. Just disliking Clara doesn't make me a hater. Hell I liked her at first. But by this point almost every companion has become some sort of concept, something to carry the series instead of the Doctor himself. Danny Pink didn't help the situation nor did bringing Clara back in an episode that should have been about the Doctor finding Galifrey

12 and Clara had the most incredible emotional moments! I loved 11+Amy+Rory but I wish there had been more emotion from Amy+Rory spread over a few episodes over losing baby Melody. I mean she hopped right back on the T.A.R.D.I.S like nothing happened. Clara loses Danny and flipped out. 12 loses River after Darilium and he actually mourns her in the Mysterio episode and he had her picture on his desk! Ironically, watching 10's angst over Rose annoyed the heck out of me. I didn't even realize they were supposed to be in love!

I genuinely don't understand why people hate Hell Bent, it was such an emotional and cleverly written episode with the Doctor telling the story. The way Clara left was perfect for her as she was becoming so much like the Doctor it felt ready for her to go of on her own adventures. They have never had the Doctor forget a companion before and we've never had a companion leave like that before. I really don't understand why people don't like this episode.
@henrypeters5291

As someone who didn't like the episode there are a few good reasons. First, I think he went to far. I understand that they wanted for him to be vulnerable but he really went to far. I would have preferred if he just jumped in the Tardis instead of involving the time lords. Second, They killed a character off and then brought her back instantly. Thus cheapening a pretty good death. And the way they brought her back didn't really settle with me. Third, how they showed Galifrey too much. Its not one of my quiffs but they made it look like little house on the prairie. I was fond of how they handled Rasillon. Again this really wasn't my problem.
@The12thDimension.
@The12thDimension. 6 лет назад
People Hate Hell Bent because, 1) It brings back Clara *again* after a brilliant exit in Face to raven 2) in this scene it says that the only reason the doctor was punching the Azbantium wall in the confession diel was to simply save Clara, not keep a great secret from the Universe 3) in The War games (1969) the Doctor said he left Galifrey because he was fed up of the time Lords rules of preserving the universe, not exploring it. But in Hell bent he said it was because of the Hybrid (which the doctor has never mentioned before) 4) the Daleks, Cybermen and Weeping angels are brought back only the serve as a little jumpscare instead of being threatening 5) Clara becomes overpowered as f**k and gets her own Tardis 6) the Hybrid mystery is never resolved 7) this episode goes on for 1 whole hour and doesn't change much. 8)clara becomes invincible at the end, making her even more overpowered 9)After The day of the Doctor, the hype for the return of Gallifrey was burning through everyone like a bomb, so it returning for 20 minutes for no reason was a massive let down 10)The Doctor managed to ban Rassilon (who was ounce feared as a god who could kill on sight) after 3 minutes of arguing 11)Ashilder suggests that the Doctor might be half Time lord half human, which is the main thing people hate about the Doctor who TV movie (1996).

Henry Peters Why are you fond of how they treated Rassilon? When he was first introduced he could manipulate the fabric of space and time with a thought but in Hell Bent he was reduced to a screamy man in the desert
@dutchman8887
@dutchman8887 5 лет назад
@@The12thDimension. 1) Not a problem as this exit was better. 2) Not a problem as it's much truer to the character of The Doctor. 3) Not a problem as there's been loads of explanations for why he left. Doctor Who constantly changes it's canon to the point it doesn't even really have one. Doesn't matter either way. 4) So? We've had a million episodes with them already. This episode wasn't about them. Pretty irrelevant. 5) Clara doesn't become overpowered. Certainly no more than The Doctor is. She still returns to die eventually. 6) Yes it was. The hybrid was The Doctor and Clara. 7) Now this point is just odd. I don't see why length means a lot of things have to change. A lot changes anyway.The relationship between the characters is beautifully concluded. Nobody blows up or anything but that doesn't matter. Clara comes back from the dead (not much apparently) but the Doctor has to forget her almost for the rest of his time as 12. Plus he overthrows the president of Gallifrey. 8) See point 5. 9) It wasn't a let down. The Doctor and Gallifrey rarely see eye to eye. The idea that he'd be more concerned with his friend than Gallifrey is so wonderful and true to the character. Even still he overthrows the Lord President and then becomes Lord President himself. I don't know what people expected (neither did they). 10) This is just poor from you. He managed to overthrow him because he was a hero in the time war and the people respected him more. Everything he did is coming back. He says a couple of sentences so I'm not sure where you get 3 minutes of arguing from. 11) She does SUGGEST that but literally right after that she says she has a better theory so I don't see what your point is. It's also here where the Clara + Doctor is the Hybrid comes from (as well as Moffat confirming that) so judging by point 6 you must've not been paying attention much.
@The12thDimension.
@The12thDimension. 5 лет назад
@@dutchman8887 I'm only going to reply to a few because I'll be here for hours if I reply to them all. I personally think this exit for Clara is not as good as Face the Ravens because that episode shows that death is inevitable. No matter how far or fast you run, death will strike and you can't do anything to stop it, which is very true to real life so it shows a connection to the real world. But in Hell bent, you can just get a time machine and live forever until you feel like dying. Yes the show can be as silly as it likes, which makes it so fun, but with the death of a loved one Face the raven for me. Just because the Daleks and Cybermen have appeared for no reason before doesn't mean its OK for Moffat to do it again. Clara for a companion gets too much power, her own Tardis, companion and she's immortal. Even the Doctor can die!!! The problem with Clara constantly leaving and returning is that her actual departure doesn't feel genuine or real, that's true here because she returns *AGAIN* in twice apon a time!!!! The Doctor banishing Rassilon should've been the whole episode, showing how an army and all the power doesn't make you a true leader. The episode could have Rassilon manipulating people by claiming it was the Doctors fault of the war ever starting. But slowly the Doctor takes control of the Citidel. Or maybe have Rassilon come back from banishment half way through the episode and the Doctor isattacked by Rassilon's new army. Its a series finale, it can be as big and bombastic as it wants. This episode spent a good amount of its run time dealing with the Doctor letting go of Clara, even though the previous two episodes (or 4.5 billion years) were the same thing

I can understand why some people didn't like either Capaldi's doctor or Clara cos I didn't at first. It took a while for Clara to grow on me cos Amy and Rory before her were both just so likeable and it was the same with Capaldi following Matt Smith. Both Tennant and Smith were incredibly charismatic Doctors so Capaldi's seemingly grumpy, disinterested and uncaring demeanour was pretty hard to get on board with. What I don't understand though is why some of those people stopped watching because of it. Doctor who regularly changes it's actors yet they've always continued to pick great ones. I love Doctor Who for many things but especially the quality of the acting which ranges from humorous to dramatic and often even heart wrenching. This scene is a perfect example. I may not have liked either character much at first but after watching for over a decade I had faith that I'd warm to them both, especially knowing the quality of talent Capaldi possesses as an actor. There have been many emotional scenes over the years involving the doctor losing a companion but this was in a league of it's own. Capaldi's doctor who originally seemed so uncaring, went to the greatest lengths of any doctor in his desperacy not to lose his friend. I feel sorry for those people who didn't have faith in Doctor Who and stopped watching cos they missed the most powerful episodes they've ever created.

That's only half of the narrative, I think. Because every subsequent time he reached the Wall, he realized where he was, his already past, current and potential future situation, suddenly becoming burdened with the enormous psychological and emotional strain of an ever-increasing process that amounted to up to 4.5 billion years, never even "knowing" how long it would actually take to get through the Wall.

Screw the haters, I love this episode. It’s one of those “The Doctor goes too far” moments similar to Timelord Victorious that makes you really uncomfortable but showcases what happens when the Doctor forgets to have the right perspective. I mean, any average joe left alone with a time machine might just do exactly the same thing, but the Doctor at this point been at it for 2000 years or whatever, so they’re intimately familiar with the rules. And yet, on occasion, whether it be desperation or passion or just getting too used to something, they can lose themself and do something rash and ultimately both destructive and SELF-destructive. This is one of those few moments. And I love it. It’s acted well, it lets us see more of the Timelords and Gallifrey, it finally brought a definite conclusion to Clara’s run on the show (what is death to a time traveller? This episode solidified that he couldn’t see her anymore.) I dunno, I’m a fan. A lot of people hate this episode. It’s a lot of people’s LEAST favorite episode. Of course, it’s by no means MY favorite, but it is quite good in my opinion.
