Everybody seems to ask why he didn't use the spade on the wall. When he realizes what he has to do he no longer has it and his way out of the room is blocked. He has no choice but to use his hands.

What you have to remember is that when the Doctor realizes he has repeated the same scenario over and over again he also knows he will have to start once more from zero, making the same deductions; playing perfectly simply to arrive back at the same sequence of torture and death. He doesn't give in, which implies he believes saving himself by full confession will lead to worse consequences.

They also dont show every step of the Doctor's journey of discovery. He could spend days, weeks trying to get through this maze. Maybe its a form of mercy that each clone gets to come to terms with what the grief before making the ultimate sacrifice? As for why he doesn't bring the spade I think the Doctor who set this all up originally tried to spare himself the knowledge of this fate. Only when he reaches the room does the Doctor discover what he has to give up. The Doctor literally explains his thought process; its only on the verge of death that he does his best thinking.

@@thelazygamer1639 exactly but people are always annoyed he doesn’t bring the shovel! But why would he?! The Doctor doesn’t know he’s going to his death or that the diamond wall is in there. He uses what he has; fists and pure stubbornness

What if I told you, that this is commonly called the best episode in Doctor Who. Me personally? It's not my absolute favorite but it is definitely incredible, my favorite Doctor is Capaldi.

Amazing episode. A lot of people say he should have used the shovel. However, he did not know he would need to shovel until he was at the wall and so it was too late!
