It's a metaphor for grief and depression. Every day blurring into one loop until eventually you push through it.

Here we see Moffat's greatest achievement. A 50 minute utterly masterful metaphor for grief, some of the best directing in the show's history, and one of many breathtaking performances from Capaldi (along with perhaps the best score of any episode ever). And we finally get to see your reaction.

there's this emperor and he asks this shepherd's boy, how many seconds in eternity? And the shepherd's boy says, there's this mountain of pure diamond. It takes an hour to climb it, and an hour to go around it! Every hundred years, a little bird comes and sharpens its beak on the diamond mountain. And when the entire mountain is chiselled away, the first second of eternity will have passed! You must think that's a hell of a long time, Personally, I think that's a hell of a bird.

One aspect I like that pairs nicely with Face the Raven is how it demonstrates how conscious of his actions the Doctor is. A lot of seemingly random actions are actually about gathering information so when he takes a risk, it's a very calculated one. (And obviously, being able to regenerate is a pretty great fallback if things go bad.) You also see Missy exhibit some of the same behaviors. But his companions just see him taking huge risks and apparently surviving by virtue of being clever and quirky. So when they try to emulate that behavior, as the very clever Clara did, it can be fatal. Rory called him out on this their first trip - the most dangerous thing about the Doctor is how he makes people want to impress him. Rory traveled on the TARDIS because of Amy, not the Doctor or the thrill of adventure, so he was much more clear-eyed about the risks.

A full 55 minute monologue in a castle which only Peter Capaldi's Doctor could deliver and keep you interested for every second. I'm still convinced 5 years on that no other Doctor could have even begun to make this episode what it was.

Rachel Talalay, who directed this episode, and whoever the editor was, are magicians.

This is still by far one of my favorite Capaldi episodes, he will always be my Doctor.

This episode just goes to show you why Capaldi is one of the best doctors ever! His performance is astounding!

The Shepherd's Boy track is one of the best pieces of music I've ever heard for any TV show. Murray Gold was at the top of his game for that one.

Did I ever tell you the definition of perfection? This episode.

That skull is actually based on Capaldi's. They put in that much detail.

When I first saw this episode I actually stood up and aplauded at the end! Also, remember the end of series 8, when the Doctor realises Missy lied about Galifrey's co-ordinates? What did the Doctor do? Repeatedly punched the Tardis console. Nice bit of foreshadowing there!

This episode along with World Enough and Time in series 10 are Capaldi’s best Episodes, both a 10/10 each.

"Burning the old me, and make a new one" reference to regeneration. That sentence made me cry aggain. I remember 10 saying don't wanna go, and say " even if I change it feels like dying, i die and some new man goes wondering around". 😭

btw here's the story part of which the Doctor tells in the end: There was once on a time a shepherd boy whose fame spread far and wide because of the wise answers which he gave to every question. The King of the country heard of it likewise, but did not believe it, and sent for the boy. Then he said to him: "If thou canst give me an answer to three questions which I will ask thee, I will look on thee as my own child, and thou shall dwell with me in my royal palace." The boy said: "What are the three questions?" The King said: "The first is, how many drops of water are there in the ocean?" The shepherd boy answered: "Lord King, if you will have all the rivers on earth dammed up so that not a single drop runs from them into the sea until I have counted it, I will tell you how many drops there are in the sea." The King said: "The next question is, how many stars are there in the sky?" The shepherd boy said: "Give me a great sheet of white paper," and then he made so many fine points on it with a pen that they could scarcely be seen, and it was all but impossible to count them; any one who looked at them would have lost his sight. Then he said: "There are as many stars in the sky as there are points on the paper; just count them." But no one was able to do it. The King said: "The third question is, how many seconds of time are there in eternity." Then said the shepherd boy: "In Lower Pomerania is the Diamond Mountain, which is two miles and a half high, two miles and a half wide, and two miles and a half in depth; every hundred years a little bird comes and sharpens its beak on it, and when the whole mountain is worn away by this, then the first second of eternity will be over."

One of the best episodes of the reboot in my opinion.

the music during that end montage is just incredible and still gives me chills. a standout episode and peter pulled it off so phenomenally all by himself. so glad we’re finally here

Peter Capaldi's Doctor saved my life. When this aired, I was mourning the loss of my husband and seriously contemplating suicide. I won't bore you with the details. Thank you for your reaction tho and helping me remember. I will say you ain't seen nothing yet.

In 'Face The Raven' the Doctor tells a small child on the street "Remember 82" and here, it takes him 82 minutes to go from one side of the castle to the other 😉

This is the perfect episode. A masterpiece. And what a soundtrack! I've got chills every time I listen to "The Shepherd's Boy" even today after all these years! Always speachless.

When I first watched it I wasn’t that much of a fan but it’s an episode that gets better on every viewing. One of the greatest episodes in the history of the show from a writing, acting and directing stand point

This is definitely a massive fan-favourite episode. Such amazing acting from Capaldi, proving he can carry an entire episode all by himself.

To anyone who wonders why the wall didn't reset, it's because that the amount of change that was being caused to it was too insignificant to be noticed that each run.

What I love about the capaldi era, Capaldi, only signed one season at a time. And each finale was written with capaldi’s departure in mind. His first series wasn’t anything too dramatic, other than what I imagine, he would have fired at Missy backfiring onto himself. Series 9 was the memory wipe potentially being incompatible. Series 10, was as it was. But you had that risk this doctor would be gone sooner than you would expect.

I didn't like Peter in the beginning, I've learned that I don't like any of them in the beginning because "they're not the old one", and that I just need to take a break when they switch and then give the new person a fair chance to impress me :) But let me tell you: Peter 100% won me over with this performance. 100%

I think this is a masterpiece on every level! Love it. 😁

This episode is so sick in so many ways man. The way it showcases how the Doctor breaks down a problem, literally slowing down time by thinking faster than any human could fathom, receding into his mind palace, which of course is his beloved home: the TARDIS. The way it showcases the strength of a Time Lords physiology by explicitly stating that Azbantium is 400 times harder than Diamond, and yet a Time Lord can punch through it, given enough time. The way it shows how it takes *days* for a Time Lord to really die fully, giving him just enough time to crawl back to the teleporter and re-fuel it with the last of his life-energy.

congratulations. You have just seen one of the greatest episodes of all time. That was pure Doctor Who. I wish the fan base of this series was bigger. I think everyone needs the doctor ;)

Longtime lurker here, I was waiting till you got here. A tour-de-force by Capaldi and this was the episode that solidified him as MY Doctor. For a long time it was 11, but this episode and the next are the most bittersweet episodes of Who but also the most brilliant. Heaven Sent still stands as my favorite Who episode ever.

People always remember the Doctor punching that wall. They don’t remember him crawling half dead back to the teleport room. For billions of years.

On first viewing I was stunned by this episode, but it takes at least two viewings for its majesty to truly sink in.

I feel this is Capaldi's best DW episode.

This is the best episode of Who they’ll ever make. By far...

I appreciate the fact that 12 has more time to tell the story the farther the tunnel into the barrier extends. It's heartbreaking that when he first sees the barrier on each reboot, immediately all the memories from the previous versions of himself come back. "But I can remember Clara, you don't understand. I can remember it all." Billions of years of repetition of the same loop of activity is a devastating concept.

One of the Doctor's earlier incarnations spent two weeks (from our subjective viewpoint) dying, but at least it didn't happen again immediately afterwards!

finally! if previous episodes hadn't turned me into Capaldi's fanboy, the episode alone would of done it. Its my absolute favorite episode of all time.

This is basically my favorite episode. I adore it. He's so inspiring and determined. and you understand so much about the beginning once you realize what's happening. this entire episode is one long monologue, and Capaldi thrives there.
