Doctor: "Master, Im sorry." Master: "Tough." - Uptopia Series 3 Adelaide: "No one should have that much power." Doctor: "Tough." Master: "Im the Master and you will obey me!" Doctor: "The laws of time are mine and they will OBEY me!" Its crazy how similar The Doctor came to becoming The Master. This is why he needs a companion. They give him the humanity he needs and guide him as to not becoming an immortal god of time.

I think by saving the crew he was trying to change a fixed point in time - but not for their sakes but his own. He wanted to see if he could change his own fixed death. By seeing that he couldn't change her fate, he realized that he can't change his fate and that he went off the doctors way.

Knew you would appreciate this one Im. The shift actually subtly happened a little earlier than you think: “The laws of time are mine, and they WILL OBEY ME!!!” What’s that expression about ‘the road to hell is paved with good intentions’? While trying to do a compassionate thing he ends up releasing his dark side. What did Donna say? “Sometimes I think you need someone to stop you”. He’s definitely travelled alone for too long at this point.

What an episode this was. The acting, storyline, set, camera work, the music. Unbelievable.

Yep, Tennant was fantastic in this. And Lindsay Duncan is always good ;) I loved what they did with this episode, this Doctor who just doesn't care anymore. Evidently, losing everyone and travelling on his own took a toll on him. He's scary, but I can't help but to feel bad for him. And yet, I find myself wanting at least a few episodes with the Time Lord Victorious.

This was an incredible episode and is my favourite in the show. I agree with most things you said but I think that Adelaide didn't do it too shock The Doctor but mainly because she was trying to correct time. It's incredible to see what travelling alone can do to The Doctor and how far he can go without a companion
@wellington-rq2br
@wellington-rq2br 2 года назад
This is the first time I've seen it suggested that the suicide is aimed at affecting the Doctor. I think that's a far too Doctor centric view and Adelaide's only interest is in maintaining the timeline - her family's in particular.
@HuntingViolets
@HuntingViolets 4 месяца назад
I have to wonder if what she does maintains her legacy, though. She mysteriously disappears from a Mars mission and commits suicide on Earth. Can this inspire her granddaughter(?) to follow across the stars? If that doesn't happen . . .

The Dr victorious is a scary concept. Just like the guide from the Voyage of the Damned said. If you could choose who lives or dies, then what does that make you. Or something like that

The Master in Utopia : ''Tough.'' Edit: 19:56 YES! The Doctor in Waters of Mars: ''Tough.'' The Master's catchphrase: ''I am The Master, and you will obey me!'' The Doctor: ''The laws of time are mine, *and they will obey me!!''*

It's crazy how Eccleston asking to save everybody "just this once" is so uplifting. Whilst Tennat fighting time to save everyone feels the opposite. We have this defeated Dr who, even though he saved the world, payed a terrible price and his fighting against his own death. It's just so heartbreaking how well it's done

The track is called Vale (well technically timelord victorious but thats a spin off of Vale) which means "farewell" Latin. Its signifying the end of a song. It's cool knowing The Doctor can hear the singing in his head as the Ood are telepathic and are singing via telepathy.

This is, for my money, Tennant's finest performance in the role. It would also have been the perfect end for the Tenth Doctor. I'm not a fan of his final episodes and I think it would have been more compelling if his hubris had cost him here. As a story it highlights how close the Doctor is to becoming the Master when pushed.

One single line in this episode sparked an entire multi-media spanning storyline more than a decade later with the Timelord Victorious arc. It spanned audio dramas, books, comics, figurines and even a RU-vid series with Daleks. The Waters of Mars episode showcase what would happen when the Doctor is desperate enough that he is willing to cross a line that he never dared before. There's an audio drama (part of the Timelord Victorious arc that acts as a prequel) called Genetics of the Daleks that feature the Fourth Doctor and a Dalek who survived the destruction of his time squad at the hands of his future incarnation. The Dalek basically warns the Doctor that he will become a warrior without morality, "a being willing to break the laws of time, a being willing to commit genocide...The Timelord Victorious"
