I totally agree with you about the tone. I remember hating this episode at first because of how tonally off it felt. The Bill/Doctor moments should have been sweeter/more realistic. And the cgi alien bugs just didn’t fit with the horror vibe. It should have been a piece of alien tech the boy found instead. That way you can play on the horror elements without having to show the bug parts. A lot didn’t really make sense either. How did the friends all survive that fate? Even if you can explain it... it still doesn’t translate as plausible on screen. The script and direction didn’t work together leaving you with an unscary haunted house with random comedy moments that didn’t work. And let’s just say none of the young guest actors were at their best acting wise here but to be fair they didn’t get much to work with. David Suchet who played the creepy man is a legendary British actor famous for playing Agatha Christie’s Poirot on British tv. A brilliant actor who did what he could with the role. All in all I kinda like the son/mother reveal and the idea of her trapped and surviving on the fate of others but unfortunately there’s a lot ‘off’ with the episode so it doesn’t really make up for it. An interesting note... his episode was filmed differently then normally. The sound was recorded in some kind of 3D format which is why when you had your earphones in you looked like you were experiencing the ‘knocks’ all around you.

This episode generally is viewed as an alright standalone story. Not bad but not memorable. I think it was the Moffat episode trying to copy an RTD format (especially with Bill, trying to make her like an RTD companion) but it didn’t work. Thanks god it was a one off because moffat (and his team of writers since moffat checks their scripts) were better at space stories with little ties to earth whereas RTD was better at drama on Earth (Jackie, Mickey, Sylvia and Wilf) Chibnall so far seemed to try to do RTD in S11 but not quite stick the landing then in S12 tried to do a Moffat which worked better
