(1) The Amsterdam One (2) Snakes and Ladders (3) The Two Brigadiers (4) Nyssa in her Underwear (5) Pirates of the Constellation (6) Obligatory Master Story I saw this season when it first aired and all I can remember is Nyssa in her underwear and old fashioned ships racing in space.
Very well done. I gave it a thumbs up just for the Dalek karaoke 🎤. They need a recording contract. As a nerd, I do want to point out that Michael Gough was also the villain, The Celestial Toymaker from the First Doctor story that goes by the same name.
@@caacrinolass3501 I've gone through the videos and I think i've found them all. I've added a commend to this video with links to the ones I found. Enjoy.
One of the great tragedies of that period of British TV is that Terry Nation wanted to introduce the Daleks into Blake's 7 as a surprise twist at the end of the first series, but the BBC blocked it...that would have been something amazing.
From what I understand, William Russel wasn't available for filming so the episode was rewritten with Lethbridge-Stewart. As many pointed out, teaching really didn't suit the character, but Courtney did his usual good job.
I remember Micheal Gough as the Celestial Toymaker. He was terrifying, far scarier than the Daleks to me. Looking again at the story, not so much 😎 He was also the "best" Alfred imo
I saw this video a couple of days ago, and when at work, mind idling as it does when work is monotonous, it suddenly hit me. I knew the true purpose of Tegan (no offense intended to Janet). You see, here in Australia, the is a common phrase that, for Aussies, perfectly sums up those who come from the homeland then do nothing but complain about things like the weather and the tendency for local wildlife to try to kill you (you really do get used to it :D). We call them, "Whinging Poms." Of course those ruddy whinging Poms whinge about being called whinging Poms, which got as far as the BBC, who whinged about it. So in retaliation, they creted Tegan, the "whinging" Aussie. Think about it. Nothing ever satisfied her, she trusted no one (like she spent to much time getting attacked by the wildlife), and even complained when she leaves the TARDIS in Resurrection of the Daleks. Tegan is the ultimate middle finger to Aussies for denigrating generations of their spiritual cousins. (again, no offense intended to Janet, this is meant purely as a joke).
Love the explanation of the British school system. You could simplify it, though: Public schools are so-called because most the public can't get anywhere near them!
One thing I heard about the Kamelion robot was that the creator passed away, and no one else new how to program the robot, so that was why he was unused, not including all the other stuff that was a problem too.
John Nathan-Turner actually salvaged Kamelion from a local junkyard and Mike Power was appointed to re-adapts the prop's functions. But right before finishing and Kamelion was to be filmed, Power died in a boating accident and didn't leave any instructions on how to operate the prop.
13:40 The space pirate outfits are pretty clear homages to 1950s era pulp scifi artwork. You got ridiculous bubble helmets in all shapes and sizes back then, frequently accompanied by outfits that left skin exposed to the vacuum of space. If anything those two are more fully dressed than many examples from the era - not uncommon to see a bit of cheesecake in a space bikini and rocket belt with a giant bubble helmet that left her perm unmussed, for ex. They're not *good* homages and they look cheap as well as ridiculous, but I can see what the show was going for. Also, shouldn't that be "Eyestalk of the Tiger" in the musical number? :)
A mixed bag of a season, but with a consistently awesome guest cast. I must say, Valentine Dyall's Black Guardian was always one of my personal favourite villains. Shame we never got that promised third encounter.
While casting actors in their twenties as teenagers has always been common, Mark Strickson simply doesn't look like someone who could pass for a teenager and no one ever seemed to realize he was supposed to be that young (or at least look it).
Hot Dam I love your review style. Really enjoying the Dr Who recaps, particularly this one. My wife and I walked down the isle of our wedding to Eye of the Tiger!
Clearly, this antipodean mong hasn't seen all stories of the classic era but feels totally justified in spouting about seasons like an accepted authority.
10:11 David Collins was also Legolas in the BBC radio adaption of Lord of the Rings. Shame on you for not pointing this out. Your nerd credentials should be revoked.
Absolutely none of it was planned. JNT decided to have Omega open the season as he opened season ten and it was not till the season was all commissioned that Ian Levine pointed out to JNT that every story had an element of the show’s past that JNT went “ oh yeah “ and told the press. The only reason Terminus and Enlightenment had an element of the past is because the Black Guardian sub plot was arced through them. As for Snakedance, it was just there because Chris Bailey was frustrated with Kinda and wanted to try again.
I have never liked 80's Dr Who. The problem is that it is so 80's which dates it more then the shows made in the 70's which were the next level up and never been bettered.
Let's also not forget that Dugdale aka Mr Poncy Ginger Bloke in a Funny Hat from Snakedance was played by Brian Miller, Elisabeth Sladen's husband, who'd turn up in the Capaldi era, as well as Sarah Jane Adventures!
So to answer two things posed in this video. The idea for the Guardians to wear the hawk and dove was by John Nathan-Turner himself. He was asked this at an American convention and he took credit for it. The other thing was about Kamelion. Kamelion was supposed to appear in the second story of Season 21, The Awakening. A brief scene was filmed but subsequently cut.
Merry Xmas mate! You have entertained me all year with some great content and I just want to say thanks. Hope you have a wonderful Christmas and all the best to you and yours. Peace!
Arc of Infinity: 1) The scene questioned about the tone and quickness of deciding to kill the Doctor clearly depicted itself as the end result of an earlier meeting. 2) Michael Gough's OTHER connection to Doctor Who was the fact that he had also already appeared on the show during the Hartnell era.
No she wouldn't. She would despise Tegan. Anyone who fled to the TARDIS trying to pilot it away through fear, content to leave the Doctor and friends behind (Four to Doomsday) would not score very highly with Leela.
@SonofSethoitae I'm at a loss at how to explain to you that your reply is meaningless. Firstly, when did I say 'The King's Demons' came before 'Four to Doomsday'...? Yes, that's right, nowhere. Secondly, If you think Leela would be proud of a selfish coward them you obviously know nothing of her character.
@@rnw2739 How do you not understand that people change as time goes on? Tegan grew as a person between Four to Doomsday and The King's Demons. Which I'd hoped was obvious, but evidently you didn't catch my meaning.
@Sonofseth:ignore this mw2739 fool, he doesn’t get reality and normal human behaviour. People go on journeys , no one is perfect . People can be scared and ‘cowardly’ and learn to be brave. No more fitting catchphrase than ‘Brave heart Tegan’. If mw 2739 was her he would have had a breakdown by the end of Logopolis, the fool.
Are you joking? Mark Strickson can actually act, unlike Waterhouse and didn't have to perform sexual acts with JNT to land the part. People ridicule Adric for very good reason, no one does the same with Turlough - other than you. I think that explains it.
Thanks for the reviews! Yes, Mawdryn Undead is a stand out episode especially with the return of the Brigadier. Enlightenment is one of my favorites of the classic series and a fun romp (you expand your vocabulary with "ephemeral"). Why production would try to make a real humanoid robot companion is beyond me, didn't they learn their lesson about mechanical companions with K-9?
Mentions Micheal Goth’s has a connection to the show by marrying a former companion, forgets he was literally the main villain of a serial in season 3. Bold move.
I love how much the 80's Master liked his disguises!! :D Most of his plans are just excuses to wear more disguises.. He even stays in character when alone, a real method villain...
The King's Demons external shots look like Sherwood from Capaldi's third episode.... And the internal shots remind me of Masque of the Red Death. Anyone else? Great review, sir.
I love these retrospectives, currently binging on these. I once had a very strange dream where I was a doctor's companion, except I couldn't speak when the Doctor was 'in the scene' and I kept waking up every time I saw a glowing orb then i' fall back asleep and continue the dream. I told my friend details of the dream and he said they sounded alot like Snakedance, an episode i hadn't ever watched, and that I may have been Adric in my dream, thus 'silenced' whenever the Doctor showed. Very friggin wierd, but there were only a few similarities to the dream when I went and watched Snakedance so that was both a relief and kinda disappointing at the same time. k, that's enough oversharing for today.
@@mrburgess1698 Yes, he was Henry Sidney, the brother-in-law of the Earl of Leicester, played by the wonderful Robert Hardy. David Collings played Sir Anthony Babington.
BBC just announced new Doctor is......Ncuti Gatwa, currently in Sex Education on Netflix. RTD said "sometimes talent just walks through the door and it's so bright and bold and brilliant I just stand back in awe and thank my lucky stars". I trust RTD's judgement. He gave us Chris, David and Matt, after all
I am now halfway through the Fifth Doctor's shows. Ugh. So far there's been one I kinda liked and it wasn't Kinda, it was the Madrwyn Undead, which gave me two things I like from Doctor Who: Time travel and a likeable character. The rest of the Fifth? Ugh. Why does the Fifth have more charisma when he's not onscreen, how is that even possible? Why was Nyssa's greatest contribution to the show going around in a light top without a bra? Why were there so many shots of Janet Fielding's butt in Terminus? Why Turlough?
