Yay, Rory has arrived (properly). I like that he doesn't just go down the Micky Smith route, and shows that he's a very different kind of companion who has no issue calling the Doctor out when he feels he needs to (and how the Doctor shows that Rory had a point by being firm with Amy later on in the episode). This is my favourite Tardis Team.
I like the bits of morose dialogue between the doctor and the mother. Matt Smith plays these bits of tragedy so well throughout the show I love the way he brings out the doctors coldness and sadness.
She has been in so many of my favourite productions over the years on stage ,tv, and movies she made everything she appeared in just shinethat much brighter with her talent and beauty
She really was something else. Remembering what Jason Isaac said about her being able to show so much with her eyes is absolutely spot on. She was one of the best
16:50 Helen McRory had a nearly 20 year career in film and tv, going back to Interview With A Vampire. Married to Damian Lewis of Band Of Brothers and Homeland. She died of breast cancer in 2021
Very happy to see Rory come to the party! Much respect! I know that the road ahead is long and has many turns, but another incredible character by the amazing Helen McCrory is Elizabeth Pollyanna "Polly" Gray from Peaky Blinders! A show that absolutely needs to be on that must watch list!
I love the Rekkai knows Arthur Darvill from Legends of Tomorrow & immediately made the connection of him being “Doctor-ish” there and a time traveler - as someone who knew him as Rory first I had a similar reaction to seeing him in LoT “Wow, Rory’s become the Doctor 😂”.
Legends wears it's love of Who on its sleeve. Darvill plays a Doctor-like character in a Captain Jack coat in a stolen time/space ship with a six-sided control console and a library/office that is very reminiscent of Classic Who and the TV Movie. (The Wave Rider even looks a bit like the Star Wars Millennium Falcon)
He’s why I even watched Legends, I was quitting all the superhero shows and Arthur got me to tune in because I love Rory and it was definitely giving me Doctor Who vibes.
It's not just Rory that is different this time when compared with Mickey. It's The Doctor. In Rose, Doc shows up and basically ruins Mickey's world. Steals his girl, leaves him to be accused of horrible crimes, and he keeps putting Mickey down. The Doctor consciously made the choice at the end of last episode, he's not going to do that anymore. I love that. It's one of the reasons this becomes the best TARDIS team of the modern era, in my view. Any plans to go back and watch some of the Classic show? I'd love to see you guys do some Tom Baker era stuff. His gothic horror serials are really good for their time. Pyramids of Mars, Genesis of the Daleks. Great stuff.
The Vampires of Venice.. the Doctor has a history with vampires, so when he thought this is what he was dealing with, it could have taken him to a bad place
This is a showcase of the Doctor's experience. He's not going to let Amy and Rory go the way of Rose and Mickey, especially since he's not interested in Amy as a romantic partner.
It’s funny watching u see this the opposite way of me. As soon as I saw Rory as a Time Master… I felt like he went to the Gallifreyan Academy lol! He popped up acting just like 11 in a stolen ship! 😂😂 Cool to see it the other way round! 🥰
The writer of this episode originally didn't plan for vampires to be in it, but they seemed to fit the location. I agree this is a redo of the Mickey-Rose-Doctor situation, so we'll see how it goes this time. I think meeting Casanova on top of the "love triangle" might have been a bit much. Rory's head would explode. (It would be funny if Tennant reprised his role as Casanova, I suppose.) But this takes place in 1580 and Casanova was born in 1725. There is an ongoing fanfic where Martha meets Casanova (who looks like the Doctor) when she and Ten visit Venice.
I've heard of a lot of euphamisms in my time, but "seasoning your meat" is definitely new one. Only once in the whole history of the show has anyone ever gone in the opposite direction with the TARDIS interior reveal and said, "It's smaller on the outside!" You may know the actress playing Rosanna, the mother, better from her role as Narcissa Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies.
Definitely gonna need yall to check out Peaky Blinders then Gangs of London 🤌🏼 Both amazing shows who star the first two people in the episode, Helen McCroy and Lucian Msamati are amazing actors 👏👏
R brought out a very interesting point about Matt Smith and Moffats characterisation of this Doctor and it one of the reasons I really love this very and why I think he is the one version I would never want to piss off and all I can say is that there’s a reason for this
A special R.I.P. to Helen McCrory who played Rosanna Calvierri in this episode. She was one of my favourite actresses and taken far too soon. May God and his angels look after you.
You might recognize Helen McCrory from the Harry Potter movies. She played Draco's mom. She was in a ton of other stuff, and widely regarded by her peers as one of the best actors of her generation.
I imagined in my mind that I had Mei, Priya, Miriam, Abby, and Tyler, all from the Pixar movie, *Turning Red (2022)* in the Whoniverse and be part of my favorite team: 11th doctor and companions! 😁 And in this episode, I imagined Mei in her red panda form, fought off those vampires: by grabbing them by the necks/arms/legs etc., swiping them with her MASSIVE red panda paw, and even roaring and growling at them, scaring them off too!! 😄🤣
THANKS for this, @Syntell and @nupefromdaville !!!!!! #ArthurDarvill was hired by #theCW *after* his #DoctorWho tenure. Go back to that #LegendsofTomorrow #CWLegendsoftomorrow pilot--look at how he's dressed and how he acted!!! Straight-up Nine/Ten!!!!! Rory is my dude!!!! Wait and see, sweeties :) #DoctorWho #EleventhDoctor #MattSmith #KarenGillan #ArthurDarvill #DoctorWhoS5 #DoctorWho5x6 #DoctorWhoVampiresinVenice #Syntell #RekkaiSteed #Nupefromdaville
Between "Seasoning yourself," "Lowery's" getting a shout out, "and then Diddy come in," you all have me rollin! 🤣 This is on the weaker end of this season, along with Beast Below and Victory of the Daleks for me, but yeah, the rest of the season is really strong. I look forward to seeing your reaction to the next ep as it is middle of the road for me.
The old man in the photo on the Doctor's library card was the First Doctor (William Hartnell). Not counting Mickey, Jack and Adam, Rory is the first "regular" male companion since Classic Who. Any episode is better than "Space Babies" i cannot bear to watch that episode again it was the worst episode in the history of Dr. Who it was embarrassing and cringey, this episode however is a classic.
This is the big red button denouement often deployed by Doctor Who. If they had another half hour they could elaborate the ending but they really need to crack on.
The Beast Below is a strange one, it's one that you don't think of much when you look back on it, to the point that you might not look forward to it much on a series rewatch, but when you're actually in it, you see all the rich little details, the good speeches, the philosophical character work going on... This episode on the other hand, I think has some real issues. Not issues that break the episode necessarily, but issues nonetheless. For example, as stated, solving everything with a switch is a bit (or a lot) of a cop out. Another part is the scene just after Isabella dies, where they're sitting round the table having laughs... all the while, Francesco has just lost his only daughter to the vampires. It's tonally very out of place in the circumstances and not very good character writing having him engage with a comedic scene at that point. That said, Helen McCrory is great. I wish she could have been used as a recurring character (not necessarily the same character, obviously).
I have long thought this episode was underrated - the comparison to Space Babies is kinda apt, neither of them are incredible, but I’m not the worst thing ever as people often make out.
wow, this episode was one of my least fav of the season but on rewatch its pretty interesting. the villain lady is pretty good and the line, "you belong in a museum, or a mausoleum" is great. Rory is one of the best companions in my eyes so i'm happy to finally get him properly joining the crew. the idea of "vampire, fish, alien's" is insane, no idea how that aspect got approved. the episode is less about a cool fight and more reminding us the idea that the Doctor has a long history of being responsible for ending many species: the sadness there being key to future growth for these characters.
