It had to be this way. He couldn't die shot by the Master, or something like that. No. He was the Doctor. He had to die as he always lived. Saving a life.
highjim the worst part of doctor who even in a crowed room of people who love him the doctor always died alone as he lost his people last of his kind and that bersion of him self died in his head alone and in the dark so i always imagined that every new doctors firsr memory and fear is the old ones last hence why he always checks everything (along with making sure the regeneration did not fuck up) but he remembers the fear and it scares him as he nows one day its his turn
Tragic how the four knocks didn't come from a horrific enemy, but a dear friend that the Doctor respected as an equal. He never saw it coming. This is the era of Doctor Who that I miss. Rest in peace, Bernard Cribbins.
@thegrandpotato6014 I'll answer for the other Andrew 😂 The Doctor *respected* Mott as an equal. The doctor doesn't consider himself the godlike being the rest of the universe. Just a crazy man running away with a stolen box. But his line to mott in this scene "because that's who you are" . . . The doctor in every iteration has always respected those willing to help others. Even at the risk of their own lives.

I love how even at his angriest, there's never a moment where the Doctor even considers not saving Wilfred. He's raging because he knows he's going to do it even though he could save himself, because that's who he is.

Exactly. I've seen reviews of The Doctor being seen as childish here for getting cross with Wilf. He was NEVER angry with Wilf. He's angry at the fixed nature of this event. He's not even blaming Wilf. He's angry that time was always leading to this moment. "You just had to get yourself stuck in there didn't you"... Saying that because he knows there wasn't a choice. He was always going to be in there. "Not remotely important... But me... I could do so much more... But this is what I get". This whole line is kinda just sarcasm... Wilf is incredibly important. And the only thing worth doing is to save him. Like, ok the first time I saw it I felt like it was a bit rude. But every time I watch it again, it's nothing but love seeping out of him. He's angry at the situation, but he wouldn't do it any different
@@Dark_Ronius I think people miss the forest for the trees when looking at this scene. When the Doctor says Wilfred isn't remotely important, it isn't to be an insult or to berate him -- it's just true, Wilfred's life and the lives of all of humanity are fragile, fractions of fractions of all the creatures and things that make up the universe. The Doctor can do an infinite number of more important things than any human on Earth could for the universe -- but he's going to give up what he thinks is his last regeneration for a man as insignificant as Wilfred. That said... I can understand why people get miffed by the Doctor's reaction here despite that context. This isn't the first time he's sacrificed a life for a human. The 5th Doctor did the same for a companion he met only a story prior, and it's less about the motives being wrong and moreso the reaction. The Doctor's been put into this situation plenty -- this scene is compelling for some and a mischaracterization to others. I can't deny that Tennant and Russell's talent combined make a scene that really gets you to think about what this old timelord is feeling about his inevitable sacrifice -- but I can also see how people might scoff and wonder why he's bitching about something he's done and taken in stride many times before. Suppose its just up to the person.
I've just noticed that The Doctor exhibits all 5 stages of grief in this scene: Denial when he hears the knocks. Anger for Wilf at getting himself trapped. Bargaining that he could do "so much more." Depression as he has "lived too long". Acceptance when he tells Wilf that it's (his) honour to save his life. Absolutely masterful scene.
Honestly, i think he went through these stages at the start with expressions at his face. It's cut from this video, but when Doctor hears four knocks, there is a horror on his face, then it switches to acceptance of what had to be done
Weird question, but can you imagine being Wilfred trying to get to sleep after this scene? Knowing you'd condemned one of the most amazing people you know to death, fair enough Ten regenerates into Eleven but Wilfred had no idea how well thinks would work out for The Doctor and surely suffered for that.
The knock four times prophecy was the best plot twist ever. The way it was said was like it was Death himself knocking, but it turned out just to be an old man asking for help. The Tenth Doctor died the only way the Doctor would: he died saving someone.
I remember when this first aired. I originally assumed that the Master would be part of that prophecy. But that would've been too predictable. This was a brilliant twist.

THIS is Doctor Who; for me. A masterful monologue from Russell T Davies and the sheer powerhouse acting by Tennant and Cribbins. Seriously one of the greatest scenes in the history of the show.
You can literally feel his despair and rage at his own, kindhearted nature. He had it. He had survived. He could let a single human, who wouldn't last more than a breath in his eyes to begin with, pass away and it would be as nothing to one such as himself. Yet from the moment he saw Wilfred in that containment unit, he already knew what he would do. The inner struggle between his selflessness and his will to live was made so tangible in this scene. Masterful performance.

Which is why 11 has a completely different attitude when he’s regenerating. He’s fully accepted what’s about to happen and even seems to take a little bit of revenge for David Tennant wrecking the Tardis by intentionally sending the Tardis to crash for his replacement
I just want to point out that the number of seasons that we see for each Doctor doesn't represent the number of years that each iteration was alive. There's even indications or outright statements that some have jumped up hundreds of years. And that's not just relying on the 11th's "I could be lying" numbers. Several people have actually gone back from the very start of the series and as it turns out even 10's or 11th's estimate on their age are even too young for even 1's lifetime. Basically, the point I'm trying to make, sithat 10 wasn't 5 years but probably dozens if not hundreds of years. We just didn't get to see it all.

The way he breathes as he's crying - those deep, shuddering breaths, barely able to stop the sobbing as he gasps for air.... that is some quality acting right there.
The Replication - Especially when you extend the beginning of the scene to when the Master and the Time Lord Council have gone, and the Doctor's just crinkling on the broken glass; laughing, boasting that he cheated death-only to hear those sets of four knocks each that crumbles his hopes to ruins in a mere two seconds.
Its probably obvious but Ive just realised that Ten is arguing with the man behind the glass because in essence, Wilfred is his reflection. A man who never raises a gun, amazed by the stars and human spirit and who does what is right without thought or pause. Wilfred gets locked in the box because he was helping to save someone who was essentially his enemy. Hes everything the Doctor strives to be and in debating saving Wilfred, hes debating why he has to be that and why he always will be that. 'Thats who you are Wilfred, you are always this'
For me Wilfred was perfect in EVERY WAY. Growing up in the late Tennant era, Wilfred was the DEFINITIVE companion for the Doctor for me personally. Even in 10s final stand, Wilfred was the only man in the entire universe The Doctor considered equal to him. The one man The Doctor respected HIGHLY even going as far to ask him to never salute him from one soldier to another. Wilfred wasn’t afraid, wasn’t cruel nor cowardly. Bernard stood by the Doctors rules potentially better than The Doctor himself did. He wasn’t afraid to confront The Doctor at times even knowing his species was the deadliest in the universe, post-time war. ESPECIALLY when he looked up to the one man that essentially ended the war. Wilfred saw the beauty in the universe that the Doctor almost lost. He was the sweetest man and NO OTHER could play him other than the great, Bernard Cribbins. This man will forever be a LEGEND. Rest In Peace ❤
I have never watched the classic series, but what about Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart? From what I have heard of their relationship, you could also be describing him instead of Wilfred.
That was a very wonderful thing to say and I loved him too. Even before becoming a companion the way he was with Donna, always encouraging her and believing in her and being the grandfather we all should have already made him a great character. He was so happy for Donna when she started to travel with the Doctor and I for sure thought a part of him wanted to go along and did get his wish. However it's sad that his big adventure ends with the man he respected dying in his place. I have only heard good things about Bernard and was happy to see his final acting role be this character

What’s worse about it is that Wilfred knows what’s about to happen and yet he fully accepts death if it means he can give the doctor more years as he is now, and at the very end begs him to let he be the one to die

He's angry over the fact that he is a good person and won't allow himself to let Wilfred die. He's enraged by who he is and his very nature. In these moments, he seemingly hates having a conscience. He wants to be callous, he wants to be indifferent, he wants ANYTHING to take the decision away from him, even the radiation going off early before he has to do this to save him. Rare to see this in drama. The best person wants to be selfish but cannot because he won't be able to live with himself. Sacrifice for another is one thing but to know that the universe is far better served by the Time Lord living as long as possible in each incarnation but the Time Lord cannot do it is incredible. He gives up an regeneration just to save an old human.
It's so unbelieveably well written isn't it. I think with ten out of all of them imo he carried the most emotional weight much as I love Smith and capaldi. The sorrow the suffering the pain. God the pains got to be unbearable at times. Times he must want to give up but can't. Because if he does and the universe does need saving who would truly be able to do it. Its this constant state of flux really. Really does make you think.
He doesn't just give up a regeneration, he gives up his LAST regeneration. We didn't know it at the time (neither did RTD) but the Eleventh was the last incarnation. When you add that to the performance, it's even more somber.
3:12 That is a very layered response. It's his honor to sacrifice himself for Wilfred's life, and it's also his honor at stake if he doesn't. The only time lord that gives a damn about humanity has to walk the walk.
In one of the comics, in an alternate timeline, the Doctor chose to let Wilf die, and it broke him so badly that the Doctor fully became the Time Lord Victorious.
I know Wilfreds time is done on Doctor Who. But seeing one episode of Wilf and 12 together would be fun. Two old men running around having an adventure.

But it would be cool to have one scene where he runs into Wilfred one last time. just one scene thrown into an episide. one where the Doctor runs into him accidently at an old folks home. Donna and her mother could be there visiting him. could be a very heart warming scene to throw into an episode. a scene where the Doctor gets knocked out. He's found an thought to be a resident that snuck our of the home. He gets temporary amnesia and is trying to remember who he is. the final scene to get his memory back is running into them. in his room. seeing all 3 jogs his memory and Donna says she felt like she's seen him before. (Fires of Pompei) Donna's memory is jogged and once again she remembers the Doctor and starts to get a headache as her brain burns being half timelord. The Doctor quickly explains he is the Doctor and he kisses her on the forehead as she passes out and he blocks her memory again. then Wolf and him talk for a bit as he sneaks out finds his cloths and screwdriver.
2:46. The only way Moffat's writing helps this scene is that, when you take the War Doctor and Tentoo into account, this is technically the last time he can regenerate in his regeneration cycle. When Eleven dies, the Doctor is supposed to die for real. His anguish, his heartbreak, his fear stems from the fact that, as Ten, he only lived 8 years. His next regeneration could be just as short. When he loses his mind, then steps back and realizes "I've lived too long", he isn't just referring to his time as Ten. He's referring to himself as the Doctor in general. He's right on the precipice of being dead for good, and he's desperate for his second to last regeneration to not be this short. And it's making him cruel.
UltimateKyuubiFox I remember watching the whole episode in both parts. The thing that gets me is when he says the quotes "If I regenerate it feels like dying. some new man comes in...and I'M dead." "I've tricked people into taking lives of their own...a time lord myself can live too long." I thought up until we had the story of the Day of the Doctor and the War Doctor in existence, since the Time Lords are gone and that he can regenerate as much as he wants while not following the rules of regeneration, he took regeneration as a form of death not a form of rebirth and was tired of letting more people die because he was the last of his kind (up until Series 10!) and that if anybody has to die for him, he needs to waste a life to save somebody who will eventually die for him, just like he did when he was in his 3rd, 5th, 9th incarnations. What even made it more sadder is he said farewell to his past companions before he regenerates because he didn't want to be a new person and nobody would accept him for what he is, let alone he still is the Doctor who flies the TARDIS, uses his trusty sonic screwdriver and face off his recurring foes like the Daleks. Using that loose story arc and the whole hype of David Tennant leaving the show made the whole episode really epic and melancholy.

In the 9th Doctor episode "Aliens of London" the following conversation between Rose and The Doctor occurs: DOCTOR: 900 years of time and space and I've never been slapped by someone's mother. ROSE: Your face! DOCTOR: It hurt! ROSE: So gay (wow controversial I know)... When you say 900 years...? DOCTOR: That's my age. Now in this episode above, when the 10th Doctor is talking to Wilf on board the Vinvocci ship the following conversation occurs: WILF: You don't want to listen to an old man's tales, do you? DOCTOR: I'm older than you. WILF: Get away. DOCTOR: I'm 906 Therefore the 10th Doctor's incarnation (including his regeneration in The Stolen Earth where he regenerated but kept the same body) only lasted 6 years in total.
The 7th Doctor also claimed to be over 900. The most popular theory is that when he regenerated into the War Doctor he started counting his age over again, seeing as he was "Doctor no more". In the 50th anniversary the 11th Doctor claims to be "1200 and something" to which the War Doctor replies "400 years older than me", meaning that the War Doctor is about 800 years old. So seeing as the War Doctor regenerates later on in the episode that puts the 9th Doctor at around 800 when he was "born" so to speak. So he would have been travelling around for 100 years, give or take, before he met Rose.
Josh Oliver My theory has always been that the Time War actually erased years in the Doctor's timeline via Time Lord technology damaging the whole timestream, which is why the Doctor needed to end the war before the universe basically ripped itself to pieces.
Honestly one of the best pieces of acting I've ever seen, and one of the first that truly impacted me, I keep coming back to it over and over! DAVID TENNANT MAN!
For me, this is by far the Doctor’s finest moment. He spent 4 episodes previous running away from death...his strongest desire was to keep living. He had just made one of the most difficult decisions he has ever had to make (for the second time I might add), and yet he doesn’t get the glorious death of dying to save the entire universe. Instead, this is his reward-suffering and dying in the place of one seemingly insignificant human man (who was near the end of his life anyway). And he does all this with no audience. No one else watching. No one to applaud him or herald him as a hero. And it’s not fair. It’s just not. And he knows it, and he becomes angry. But then his face changes. He sees the look of concern and fear on Wilfred’s face , and it was like he had just realized the words that had just come out of his mouth. Words spoken in anger, bitterness, and self preservation. And he knows he’s lived too long. He’s been running from this for too long out of fear and selfishness. But what makes this moment glorious is that he doesn’t stay there. He realizes his own anger and fear, then he puts it aside. He lays down everything-his fear, his anger, his bitterness, his glorious hopes for his own future, his very life-all so that one man doesn’t have to suffer. A true hero.
"Wilfred it's my honor." Those words are the very reason I love the Doctor. His harsh words, his sometimes less than heroic actions, his selfish wants, all boiled away to one core part of the Doctor, he considers being able to save people like Wilfred, like the human race, an honour and a privilege.
I think the most painful part about this scene is that you can pinpoint the exact moment Ten "dies". As soon as the system shuts down, that's his life gone.... I always get chills at that moment. I know he gets up afterwards, that's how regeneration works. But it's still really sad....
Really? I would say it's at the beginning where he's really pleased about surviving Rassilon and the other Time Lords. Then he hears the knocking and you can see his face fall.
I don´t think none of those are the saddest parts. In my opinion, the saddest part is the "I could do so much more" and the "Is not fare". He could perfectly not die in this episode. But he is the good old Doctor. He will always save you. And its not fare
The saddest part for me is when he meets Verity Newman at the book signing. The way her breath quickens and her eyes become wild before she looks up. THAT has me in tears everytime.
To those who complain about the doctors selfishness, please consider this: This was a time to humble the doctor. The first time tenant faces the master there are seems were characters literally praying to him. His hubris had grown to big, this is exemplified in Timelord Victorios. The Doctor was dealing with having lived so long and lost so much, that he had lost sight of who he really was. This was the Doctors punishment for his hubris. It's fitting and so powerful. His death isn't saying humanity is unimportant, but by excepting his death. He is once again accepting that he has no more greater control over life and death as we do.
I think he didnt need to accept death, since he could have left wilf. But this was proof that 10 overcame his hubris. He no longer saw himself as more important or above the 'little people'. I think 10 was without a doubt the most flawed and human doctor. Unlike other doctors he felt envy, rage and greed at such a level that his identity was put into question. But in the end he still proved to himself that he was the doctor, flaws and all
This is all in my opinion so hate me if you want, but it is ALL opinionated. David Tennant's Doctor was by far the most impactful. He found true love. He found hope... And just as easily watched all of it die. He experienced heartbreak that would kill anyone else. He sacrificed everything for almost nothing. He gave his life to save one, insignificant, worthless soul. He lived with the constant pain and regret of what he had done. He stayed strong even in the face of certain defeat. David Tennant put so much into his role, it felt real. The emotion, the power, everything about the 10th Doctor was absolutely astonishing. He was a man who knew nothing but pain, but chose to love. That's what makes him the greatest, in my opinion. David Tennant's Doctor was, is, and always will be my favorite Doctor.
Can't imagine what it would be like for Wilf, whatching the Doctor basically get nuked and know there was nothing he could do but stand there and watch him die...
Matt Akins I always did wonder why will didn't just punch his panel. The doctor said a single button would set it off and we could see the despair in wilfs eyes and we know how much Wilfred appreciates the doctir and all the wonderful things he does. He even said to let him directly, and I believe he truly meant it. I know no one wants to die but I think wilf would have sacrificed himself.

The Doctor's a super-intelligent Time Lord, and we have the benefit of a narrative perspective, but he's just a guy in that moment and he's probably not used to trying to fight against the Doctor in particular.
Juma Salazar I still think the regeneration is very emotional and a beautiful scene but I think it’s easier to have a more heart felt Scene when you’re acting with someone in that scene.
I love that even with everything great about this scene there's still the fact that the Doctor was always going to try to save Wilfred. His "Well exactly, look at you." and "I could do so much more." was him trying to convince himself to leave and that he could bare this one sin to keep living. But in the end he just couldn't live with himself and sees that he's lived too long and almost put himself on a higher standing than everyone else much like he did on Mars.
i don't think there was much debate though, i think he knew there was absolutely no way he'd let wilf die, maybe he was trying to talk himself out of it a little, but i don't think there was even one moment where he seriously considered it
The tenth doctor burned a regeneration to avoid dying, and yet here he sacrificed his life to save one old man who said that the doctor should let him die so that the doctor didn't have to. That truly shows the doctor's character.
There is no singular "The Doctor", not really. There are some core underlying similarities but who he is changes depending on who he needs to be. Sure, one incarnation of The Doctor would have given his life in an instant for Wilf, but Ten wasn't ready to go.
Greppellio So chekovs gun is basically if someone sets a gun in the background in act one, then they should use it in act two. Wilfred’s been here since the beginning of ten basically and then is the reason for ten’s end. Hence, they set wilfred as a background character in the beginning of the run, then made him almost the most important character of ten’s run
In Deep Space Nine, it was said "it's easy to be a saint in paradise." It's easy to do the right thing without any temptation. And that's what this is. It's not "the dark side of The Doctor," it's a man who's tempted to survive--who wants to survive--but knows the right thing to do is to give his life for another. Hundreds, possibly thousands, of people have given their lives for the ideals The Doctor represents and in this scene he's called upon to do the same and he wavers. The right thing to is hard and this scene shows how hard it is. Bad writing would've ennobled a lack of hesitation. This writing shows that doubt and how The Doctor does it anyway.
Although The regeneration scene was very sad and depressing. The way how #10 died. Just takes the cake here. In my opinion. This was way more depressing than the actual regeneration. So GG Russell. You did good m8. You did good. Forever this will give me goosebumps.
In my mind all the doctors brought there own element to the character but tennant was the closest we've come to a doctor, who embodied all those traits in one incarnation he was funny, energetic and quirky but with a snap of his fingers could also show the intense hidden emotion and sadness that drove his character
then you see useless jodie basically doing a cariacture of tennant, but without the emotion, without the wit, without the raw passion, there is nothing, she is just some 'quirky' school teacher assistant or some bollox with absolutely 0 stage prescence and just tarnishes any scene she is in.
2:36 The moment Ten started to realise he wasn't liking what he was becoming. The grin, the swagger, it was fading and he was becoming everything he hated about the Timelords. The fact he took so long to think of saving Wilf, compared to his saving of Peri on Androzani, and let a dear friend see the ugliness that was forming inside of him all summed up in those words, 'live too long'. Just such a brilliant performance.
This scene is so damn deep. You're literally seeing the 7 stages of grief here in a single scene. I dunno how many people actually realize that is exactly what we're exposed to here or not. Everything from anger, to bargaining, to rage, sadness, regret, and then acceptance......
AlessandroTheCynical it's because on top of it all he knows how much The Doctor meant to Donna before she had to be wiped, it's both their sadness at once and he never leaves the doctor after
Wow you guys lasted way longer than me. I start crying when I see poor Wilf telling the Doctor to leave him. Probably thinking that an old fogey like him isn't worth someone like the Doctor. It's no easy feat to decide that someone else's life is worth more than your own...
I’ve seen this scene so many times. Every single time brings me to tears. God David Tennant’s acting here is unparalleled, you can feel the pain, the sorrow, the resentment, and the resolution in his voice. He was born for this role and by golly did he play it well.
The way it's 'supposed' to work in the situation, is the door can't open until the other door is closed, and the button is pressed. releasing the other door. a double switch lock.

What would be a bonus is the “Restoration” that the President Rassilon’s daughter (the Doctor’s true love long before Rose Tyler) had in her system/spirit that she pass on to the Doctor - enabling him to regenerate for all eternity without following the rules. Something would happen that will trigger the Doctor’s memories of the Time War and the actions he did in his 8th incarnation - so 9 would have whatever is left of 8 as part of his psychological profile. Makes sense eh?
I loved this scene so so much. We always get the doctor willingly sacrificing himself for others without a seconds thought. It's interesting to see him angered at his own moral code
You know, I can sit through 12's most painful moments just fine. Same with most of 11. But I still can't bring myself to watch this scene, because I know I'll cry. That's the distinction between a good doctor and a great one.
Lucy Hartwell 11’s regeneration speech always gets me because they not only have the Doctor accepting his death and attempting to comfort Clara, but also draw a comparison to the Doctor’s regenerations and the stages of our own lives
I always find "YOU had to go in there, YOU had to go and get stuck" interesting, I wonder perhaps if he would have saved the man who Wilfred saved originally or if this is a hint to The Doctor's darker side.
ofcourse he has a darker side he's lived for that long, seen so many terrible things and had to live with pain after thinking he killed his entire species it gets hard to handle at times
But I also feel that because its this "YOU" that the doctor said, its precisely that moment you (and the doctor himself) knew that, he have to save Wilf. Hes not going to leave him to die in there, despite all the hurtful things he said just seconds ago. ;((
I feel like behind the "you," is the idea that he has literally been standing next to, fighting with, and even fighting for his inevitable doom. His end was always literally inches from him.
He finally realized, in that moment, why they kept being brought together. It was for this situation to occur, this moment where the Doctor was going to die.

3:41 up until now the Doctor seemed fearless, grown up and knew how to do everything. All the knowledge in the universe. This moment of weakness showed us that the Doctor, despite being half immortal and lots of knowledge, he always ends up alone, no matter how much he tries. He always experienced pain for the people he cared for. After this even, he said he had to get his own reward. There was no-one and nothing to reward him except himself. He was alone to the end. The man who regrets. This led him to regenerate into the man who regrets. This guy is a great screenwriter! Never been more understanding of a show!
This rant is one of my favorite parts in Doctor who. Shows the doctor has anger too, he just usually doesn't show it often. And it took him only a short while to gain his composure.
I really think that this WAS David talking at the end. Because he really LOVED doing the show, and that's why he kept on for four seasons. Heck, say the name "David Tennant" and the whole fandom of Doctor Who goes crazy. But I really think David was sad he left the show, knowing that his time was up. Same here too. The Doctor knew his time was up, and he was sad about it, screaming how it wasn't fair, and just how his life could go on, or how his run could have gone on in the show. And i really think, included his last scene with the tremendously heartbreaking "I don't want to go" line, that if an actor can engross in his role, and really feel like he is the character is absolutely amazing. And when that actor knows it's his time, and he can just poor his real feelings into those final scenes.....Well... Thats... That's....... Fantastic
I used to think the Doctor's speech here was incredible. he could have done so much more. In Christmas Carol, when 11 says "I never met someone who wasn't important," when 10 says he'd be proud if Wilf was his dad...this scene was the culmination of all of that. A man-nay, more than that, the Time Lord Victorious-giving his life to save something not even remotely important (and seeing 10 leave) broke my heart. But 2:58? Wilf knowing that the best man he ever met-someone so alike yet so different, a man wise beyond his years, someone that would be proud to have Wilf as a dad (and Wilf would probably love him as a son, considering the recent death of Donna's dad Geoff)-is ready to sacrifice himself to save an old man? The Earth's savior time and time again giving his opportunity to "do so much more" to save an old man? Wilf's desperation and moving to tears when ordering the Doctor not to do it for him? The old soldier standing outside, knowing that he was the cause of the death of the most incredible man that he ever knew-and being able to do nothing about it? Damn I grew up with 10; and seeing 10 let out his agony and anger, accepting the four knocks, visiting his companions 1 last time, the "I don't want to go" knowing that his next life would be his last? This took the tiny little pieces of my already broken heart and smashed them with a sledgehammer (if they did "i dont want to go" take 4, I honestly dont think I'd have any tears left). Wow. This is what TV should be. This is art.
I think the Doctor's real grief in this scene comes from knowing exactly what it took to realize just how much he cares about people. No matter what excuses or pragmatic reasons he could have to turn his back on Wilfred, what hurts the most is knowing that the Doctor couldn't live with himself if he did. To him, this scenario wasn't even a choice. He's prepared to throw away everything that he is and everything that he could accomplish, because it would be meaningless in the face of remembering Wilfred. He just needed to come to terms with how much he cared.
I agree. Will never understand why people hate this story. It's Incredible from start to finish, I was constantly wanting characters to make different choices so 10 wouldn't go 😭😭😭
Widdums7 the reason why people dislike the episode is because it has many features that is out of character. Such as the doctor whining about how much he doesn't want to go. He even thinks about not saving wilf so that means he's putting himself first which the doctor doesn't do. Also earlier in the episode, the doctor says how regeneration means he dies and another man goes wandering off meaning he David's doctor dies. This is defiantly not how regeneration works as the doctor is still the same person with different characteristics. This did not give Matt smith a good start when playing the doctor because fans would see him as the evil man that stole their David. Honestly I did enjoy part of the episodes but it just kinda sabotaged Matt smiths beginning. If u want to hear more bout this search wingy media. He's made a couple videos about this and even put this episode on the worst dr who episodes of the new series.
G-S-C-12 But that was his character. What he was saying about regeneration feeling like death was inaccurate but 10 was extremely vain. I wouldn't expect him to act any differently. And I love him for that.
G-S-C-12 lool do you people seriously think it was "out of character" for the doctor to act this way because he wasn't cracking jokes or being witty or being a grown immature child or saying something clever, or because GOLLY HE ACTUALLY SHOWED EMOTION WHAAAAAT!? You seriously do NOT know the doctor at all. Also when wilf and the doctor were in the cafe, the doctor explained exactly how regeneration works. It IS like a new man sauntering away, that's EXACTLY how it's like, when you watch a doctor you hardly ever get even the slightest glimpse of the old doctor at all, apart from when 9 regenerated into 10, that was the only time the change seemed coherent because you could actually sense the 9th doctor in the 10th, but apart from that you can't. I mean you do realise that when the doctor regenerates a part of him, or multiple parts of him, dies with that incarnation, it DOES feel like dying, that's why the doctor is always dreading regenerating.
I was planning on watching all the new doctors in a row, but every time I get to the last episode with Tennant as the doctor I want to go back to his first one and watch the tenth doctor all over again. Even though I really like Matt Smith as the doctor, I can't stand to watch the tenth doctor die and just move on.
One of the saddest things is the fact that he died believing that Jenny was dead, that she hadn't regenerated. It would have been nice to see her again, at least once.
This is when Dr Who was at it's peak. The way it added new stuff but recognised the past was very good. Bringing back the Doctor's friends over Tennant's run was brilliant. His goodbye to them all was great.
The funny thing about David's finale is that he was originally planned to be in Series 5, Episode 1. And regenerate in front of Amelia. He really could of done a bit more.
You realize the only reason he found Amelia is because his TARDIS was crashing, and he only reason his TARDIS was crashing is because he was regenerating. So therefore, he wouldn't have met Amelia. #rekt
+KoolAidMan He actually was supposed to be dying, crash into Amelia and regenerate then disappear. Then Series 5 would be a story arc with older Amy where it's leading up to the inevitability of 10 going back to Amy's childhood to regenerate in front of her.
Moffat has said the original plan was for 10 to stay on one more year and have Amy as a sidekick. Supposedly the 5th series would have been similar to the one with 11, but with some changes to accommodate it being the 10th doctor instead of the 11th. And yes 10 would have first appeared to Amy when she was a kid and he was dying, then a younger 10 would show up when she was grown up

I get people can see this as 10 whining about giving his life to save Wilf, and that it seems out of character, here is my rebuttal to that Look in his eyes at the beginning of this clip... the decision was already made. The Doctor was ALWAYS going to save Wilf, he just wanted to hold onto these last moments before (in a pre-timeless child canon) he regenerates one last time. As one comment said, this was supposed to be the final regeneration after we learnt about the War Doctor, and that 11 would die for good. For a while, that made this scene so much better, because it wasn't just 10 who was going to die... it was The Doctor entirely. He regenerates, and gets one step closer to death, that's why he breaks down and wants to hold onto these moments before moving onto his final life. But it was inevitable. He knew he was always going to save Wilf on his OWN accords, because it's right. Because it's decent. And above all, it's kind (apologise for the 12th quote). He dies saving just one man, after all the time lords and the master and world ending shit had passed, it came down to just one man. One meaningless life. He could've walked away and been like "fuck fate", but no. To quote another comment, he dies doing what he lived for, saving lives. THAT'S Doctor Who. Also 13 would've 100% walked away and not have any consequences for it because Chibnall CANNOT write a fucking Doctor Who story :/
One of the best scenes ever. So well written, with an oscar-worthy performance from David Tennant, I'd argue. His voice break when he says "that's who you are" kills me every time.
Still in my honest opinion, this is the best doctor death. All the others are a grand "this saves the universe or my beloved companion." This is the doctor dying for a old nobody, the world is already saved, there's no need to do anything more, but if he doesn't then a innocent, old stupid man, a kind good man dies. And that's who kills the doctor, not some evil plot, some grand universal secret that must be protected or else, just a old man who got stuck.
It's moments like these that make me really miss the earlier seasons of Doctor Who. There were some cock ups, some bad episodes, but generally good episodes and intriguing stories were the norm. 'Dalek', 'Journey's End', 'Doomsday', 'The Family of Blood', the 'Utopia' arc, 'Midnight', 'Blink', 'The Lonely Child', 'The Parting of the Ways', so many amazing an unique stories with just the right amount of depth and intrigue. These days it's generally the opposite. The good episodes like 'Heaven Sent' are rarities, not commodities, 'Hell Bent' should have been a straight up battle of wits and influence between the Doctor and Rasselon but it became the 'Clara Show'. The bad or meh episodes are far too common. The last days of Tennant and RTD were the show's last finest days.

Mate you realize the whole series 9 arc was the Doctor and Clara right? Honestly the people who complain about Hell Bent are usually the biggest knobs out there. And "early seasons"? Mate this was 40 years into Doctor Who's history. This was the 30th season of Doctor Who.

Except Moffat tried to convince Tennant to stay on for series 5. The original plan was to have 10 crash in Amy's garden instead of 11. If Tennant wanted to stay, he could have done so
Actually, David said in an interview that it was his choice to leave because he knew that if he stayed for the next season he would never want to leave and so it would be harder on him.
This was a brilliant bit of writing When the Master was brought back to life, you automatically assume that he would somehow be responsible for the 10th Doctor's regeneration ("He will knock 4 times") I'm glad Russell T Davies didn't go with that. It would've been too predictable.
I didn't grow up with tennant's era but this genuinely made me feel like crying. the way it's acted, the way the doctor realises and comes to accept his demise, wilf telling him to go along and continue, the soundtrack or anything else. It's moving.
One of Tennant's best performances. His eye's are like fountains of emotion and this scene really shows how emotionally tortured the doctor is, especially after the time war.
I don’t think they ever could replicate this moment here. The one time the Doctor actually liked who he had been, and the people he cared about while being him is all of the sudden just gone. In a blink of an eye after saving everyone and everything he must choose between who he is, and who he became. This doctor was more human than any incarnation of the character and now chooses to go back to being that version of himself to save a friends life. Truly fantastic writing.
