Sutekh last appeared in 1975 in the story “Pyramids of Mars”

I don’t think it was hard for Carla when Ruby called her birth mum, mum, because she’s been her mum for 19 years, and always will be, and knows that it isn’t a competition as to who’s child’s who’s. Speaking as an adoptee, it’s not an either or situation where adoptees have to choose between their adoptive and birth family, it’s okay to have both if that’s what is wanted by the adoptee.
@SeenEverything
@SeenEverything Месяц назад
No, I would never think it was a competition. And I certainly don't have any personal experience with this. So, I defer to those who do. I guess I just imagined that something like that could hit some people differently and that there could be a lot of complicated emotions. But you're right, Carla is a good mother and loves her daughter. She knows she needs this and she obviously wants it for her. Even showing sympathy for Ruby's mom herself, wanting her to know that Ruby grew up safe and loved. Thanks for sharing your comment on that with me and thanks for watching.

Mel: "I didn't get to see her in her original run, but I can only imagine she was amazing." Actually, back in the day, she was one of the most hated companions and was really done dirty by crappy misogynistic scripts. The character was written as this brilliant computer programmer but all she seemed to do was scream a lot. It's absolutely fantastic to see the character kind of have a well-deserved redemption arc this time around. The character profile was she was awesome but the Classic Who writers let her down.
@SeenEverything
@SeenEverything Месяц назад
That is both disgusting and unfortunately completely unsurprising to hear. Her small redemption arc she's had thus far shows just a little of what I'm sure Bonnie Langford is capable of. Those sexist jerks didn't know what they had. I hope they do the UNIT show people have been rumoring and that they give Mel more to do. She's great. Thank you for the comment and thanks for watching!

@@SeenEverything Yes but you have to keep in mind too it was the 80's it was a very different time then I wouldn't say they were being sexist necessarily they just simply didn't know what to do with her character the whole production team was rushed and had scripts had to be rewritten because of some other actors or location schedules.

@@SeenEverything You've probably heard this before, but... Check out Big Finish. They do a lot of characters that were pretty awful in the classic series proper justice. Including the 6th Doctor. He's my least favourite on screen Doctor, but my favourite audio version.
@SeenEverything
@SeenEverything Месяц назад
@Drekal684 Thank you. Yes, I have heard of Big Finish and I’ve looked around at their stuff a bit, but I haven’t listened to it yet. It does make me happy though to know that there are avenues in other media to continue to explore these characters and to give them a bit more depth and context. Thanks for the recommendation and for watching.
@SeenEverything
@SeenEverything Месяц назад
@joshuajoshua2732 In fairness, I am probably speaking a bit strongly for someone who hasn’t yet watched the material. I’d also imagine that this is an area of some disagreement among Doctor Who fans. It could be just a lack of proper utilization and development of her character, but there are also many situations in movies and television of certain times where women just aren’t depicted in powerful, intelligent, and self-reliant roles as a general practice. Often rooted in sexism and misogyny.. Again, I obviously can’t truly form my own perspective on this until I actually watch it. But thank you for sharing your perspective and thank you for watching.

Thanks, Andrew! ⏳ Wild penultimate, right? I love how a villain from a 1975 episode has returned... with the same voice. *Gabriel* *Woolf* who'll be turning 92 in four months is back as 'Sutekh'. That feels oh so very DOCTOR WHO to me. 😊

You weren't kidding. By the end it felt like they were everywhere at once. I obviously still miss references, especiallly since I have so much Classic Who still to watch. But even so, it does feel like they are finding a good blend between their new direction and the existing lore. It'll be interesting to see if they get into the Daleks, Cybermen, etc. next season and what they're take on them with be. Looking forward to the finale!

@@SeenEverything I wondered about Daleks and Cybermen, myself. My instinct tells me they'll wait 'til the third season for those. But my instincts are often imprecise, so... as with so many things, we'll see. 🤷‍♀

Fighting ancient gods isn't necesarilly a supernatural thing in Doctor Who, he's fought plenty of gods, or godlike beings that you could consider aliens themselves, being from before Time that existed in nothing, or ones that have their own realms, like The Toymaker. The Beast existed before Time. Some other mentions here like The Trickster, The Mara, or one that wasn't mentioned like Fenric. Big Finish had Hecuba, Queen of Time. All this can be perceived as Supernatural, but it's also very much in line with sci-fi as well.
@SeenEverything
@SeenEverything Месяц назад
I suppose it is all a matter of perception and realms. I'm not the most well-versed when it comes to where Doctor Who has gone (especially in the EU), but even I have seen them dip into gods, the devil, and demons before. There is also plenty of other sci-fi and sci-fi horror that utilizes these concepts. Anyway, all of this is me taking the long way around to tell you you're right. 🤣 Thanks so much for the comment and for watching.

Just a theory- The cloaked figure is roughly 73 yards = 66 meters. At one point she/he points at The Doctor and Carla Sunday notices the figure seemingly in tears. Throughout the season The Doctor is very emotional and is often seen crying. What if the 73 yards isn’t an effect of the Ruby time paradox but what if it’s meant for The Doctor herself (Ruby’s real mum), to prevent from interacting with the past Doctor?
@SeenEverything
@SeenEverything Месяц назад
That is certainly one of the most interesting takes I've heard. Then Ruby ends up being a Time Lord. They do keep going back to the idea of family. And Susan in particular. I thought that was just going to be a nod in The Devil's Chord, since they were in the 60s and the beginning of the show took place in the 60s. But they've made the Susan thing into something bigger now. I think we at least get a cameo from Carole Ann Ford if at all possible. But having ruby be the daughter of a previous incarnation of the Doctor and essentially having him traveling in the Tardis with a member of his family again for the first time since the beginning would be quite a twist to finish the season on.

The woman in 73 Yards was also her, but that technically didn't happen. She was also in Wild Blue Yonder.

Susan Twist was the lady hiker in 73 Yards and Isaac Newtons maid in Wild Blue Yonder.

Given that episode apparently happens in or around 2024, wouldn't that mean there are two of her around at the same time? Or was the hiker also the tech genius?

@@Drekal684 I have seen an awesome theory on Twitter that the hiker is actually Susan Triad on a hike. Even though those events technically did not happen, it would explain why Susan Triad did not dream about hiking, as she has actually done it. In addition, if the hiker is actually present day Susan Triad, it would explain the lack of Sutekh in that timeline. If Ruby caused Sutekh to run away, then she essentially ended his threat in that timeline. Maybe banishing Sutekh was the purpose of the distant old lady in 73 yards rather than banishing Roger ap Gwilliam.

The Doctor had a time window in the TARDIS in the first Doctor story The Chase if I remember correctly but it was only 2D.
