Every time I see this episode, I fall in love with David Tennant all over again. The kindness with which he interacts with Jackson Lake, a complete stranger, is so heartwarming. And his own heartbreak and loneliness. It isn't one of the major episodes, but it is among the best to see the compassion Tennant brings to the character as well as the brilliant emotional continuity to his acting. He is in the moment, but the impact of events from previous episodes haunts him like few others.

Another good thing about this story is that Tennant announced he was leaving during series 4, so the regeneration in The Stolen Earth felt real, and then calling this 'The Next Doctor' as a plot point.

There’s a great U.K. series called “Blackpool” with Tennant, Morrissey and also Sarah Parish (the Arachnoss). Tennant is a cop, Morrissey runs a casino, people keep breaking out in song.

Waters of Mars is the best episode

It's sad to hear the Doctor explain why he doesn't travel with companions anymore. Jackson Lake would have made a great Doctor.

After I saw this episode for the first time, I always thought he would be a great Doctor...I still want him to be a Doctor one day.

I love the scene with Miss Hartigan at the funeral, with all the Cybermen at the graveside marching through the snow and mist. Such cool visuals

I always come into this episode thinking it will be a drag. Then I always end up laughing along with it.

I rented the Tennant series from Amazon/LoveFilm, expecting them to send me the DVDs in order. The very first one they sent me was The Next Doctor, which confused me considerably: I'd just watched Nine regenerating into Ten, and there was a next Doctor already?? Of course, I completely missed the significance of the fob watch. I've since watched all of them in the right order, but I can never see this one forr the first time in proper sequence. sigh.

The set for the children’s cyber workhouse was the set of the Torchwood hub but redresssd because they needed such a large set and didn’t have anything else at hand. I know you haven’t watched Torchwood yet but the Torchwood Hub is the place you see Jack, Ianto and Gwen operating from in the stolen earth and journeys end. For reference.

Always had a little soft spot for this story, david morrisey is a brilliant actor. They really had me (and quite a few others) convinced for MONTHS before this aired that the next doctor was actually going to be in it (because of all the promo stuff) 😂 Loved the reaction man!

Voyage of the Damned and The Next Doctor are my two favourite Christmas Specials. Revolution is probably the best 'festive' special since The End of Time.

This was still season 4 the specials are in 2009. Season 5 was 2010.

When this episode aired , it was revealed that Tennant was leaving, but not who his replacement was. David Morrissey was one of the people who was highly predicted to be the doctor.

Just imagine being one of those fans like me that started watching it in '05 and watched episodes as they came out when they would come out with one episode for an entire year and it only be a special. There were actual multiple years where there were specials with no seasons and they just skipped. Does make me feel like they can't really count it as the 50th anniversary or the 60th anniversary or anything like that I mean they even canceled the show and then brought it back like a decade later... I may hate the show these are the days of our lives however at least that show has honestly been running for decades without a single break. A lot of Doctor Who fans like to say that with all the shows combined it's the longest TV series of all time but clearly they never heard of these are the days of our lives. It was always on whenever my mom had control of the TV.

I've always found two part episodes to be stronger than the christmas episodes. For the most part, there are exceptions. But for christmas episodes I always just blank out because I don't think they're as memorable as most of the two parter episodes, even the weaker two parters are more memorable for me.

These specials aren't a favourite for me Tennant had the best end with Journey's End.... the christmas/easter/autumn/new year pecials were truly for me anyway a low point story wise..... and for me after End of Time we get into my all time favourite era of the show! Cannot wait

Not gonna lie I wish we got him instead of Matt smith, not that Matt is bad but I think he’d have been a far cooler doctor and kept the Russel T Davies style of acting and writing in terms of direction.
