A "musical" documentary looking at the attempted coup in Trinidad & Tobago in 1990 by a small maverick Islamic group called Jamaat al Muslimeen, led by Yasin Abu Bakr.
Incorporating interviews, song, street theatre, archive footage, visual poetry, vox pops and analysis, this impressionistic film tries to makes sense of the six days of madness that engulfed the Caribbean island.
Directed by Karen Martinez.

i have absolutely no connections at all what so ever to this country but I just wanna say thank you for the documentary. I've always been curious about this country because they have a lot of oil ( like Venezuela too) but they are not achieving the same level of prosperity as countries like Qatar for example. It goes to prove that having resources is not enough, there needs to be proper government policies & distribution as well.

We have so much but many of us will only realize this after we've lost everything or have them stolen from us! Short story: Prior to the 2010 General Elections, the then Government entered into a contract agreement with British Aerospace Engineering Systems to build three Offshore Patrol Vessels to protect our borders from illegal guns and drugs.Subsequent to the GE, the current administration thought it best to cancel the contract which allowed the crime levels to continue and spiral out of control and in so doing placed unnecessary strain on the already overworked and ill-equiped Protective Services! I would say more but supporters of these thieves and bottom feeders might be reading and I hate arguing especially over the internet, so I'll urge you (if you absolutely want to) to do you own research into my beloved country's current affair. Something I believe will end up in the history books. Check out "Corruption, Cocaine and Murder in Trinidad by VICE News."

@ SpiceBoy7UK23 Trinidad is plagued by POOR MANAGEMENT, and political patronage. The amount of money which has passed through our various governments will shock you. It's wasted! Corruption and mismanagement.
@kirk10p99
@kirk10p99 10 лет назад
What you say is quite true and it has to do with the points raised by nytrini2005 viz: mismanagement and corruption. Although we can't entirely rule out external pressures too...there has been at least one incident that seems suggestive of imperialist double standards and that has to do with the former ISCOTT (now Mittal Steel) where the former was accused of dumping.

bro, we don't even have oil like canada let alone these gulf states. qatar produces 1.6 million barrels per day while trinidad produces 150,000 barrels per day, so there's no comparison. they make way more money on oil than we could ever dream too. making them a much richer country.

Kind of interesting that the 'Africans', saw 'Islam' as having been taken away from them, when it was the Arab Muslims who invaded Northern Christian Africa...Democracy isn't easy, and can be very messy...But, if one has decent leaders, it's the best way to govern...

This event was a history make. It was the first time ever till now that a Muslim lead group took over a country in the Western hemisphere. Practically in the door steps of the US. What is more amazing is that Trinidad and Tobago were able by then solve this crisis. I am amazed how the US didn't interfered. It shows also that the people from that country don't mess around. May god bless Trinidad and Tobago.

This is a bit historically wrong. African Muslims were an integral part in Trinidad society until the 1890s and there are even those who were born into Muslim families in the 1930s and still live.

That person speaking in Parliament was Mr. Joseph Toney...I know this man but I didn't know he was one of the victims of the coup. He is an amazing lawyer today and a very humble person and I can't even imagine how he felt at that time. I was only 4 when this happened but I remember seeing my older cousins bringing bags and bags of stuff home where we lived in Laventille at the time and although I didn't understand, the feeling was scary because I knew something was wrong.

19:56 I think these black and whites are from the 'Black Power' movement. I remember I was 5 or 6yrs old, standing in my backyard in Teachier Village, looking down into Egypt and seeing one of these marches. The Trinidadian Stokely Carmichael/Kwame Ture is credited with coining the term 'Black Power'.

Trinidadians are peaceful people. No one in their right head believed violence was answer to political problems. that's what elections are for. The system makes allowances for that. There was no need for violence. And what happened was not Robinson's fault. It was the world at the time. We weren't the only country experiencing these things

In Q2:191, the oppression referred to is religious persecution or hindrance. So the interpretation of that lady at time:12:44 is quite off. The jamaat were not oppressed either for religious reasons or otherwise. They get fired up easily when they hear talk of oppression and fighting for rights, but unfortunately they are rebels without a clue. Their kind would never listen to what legitimate authorities in Islam have to say. I bet they don't even have a person who studied at Darool-Uloom in their midst to advise them, but her imam advised her. I guess she would take medical advice from any idiot on the street. Obviously things were bad in the time of NAR. But why? One must consider the factors to come to any sensible conclusion. The fact that the PNM had depleted the treasury and the price of oil reached an all time low would have dealt a severe blow to the treasury. So where was the money going to come from? What was the NAR supposed to do or not do? What would an opportunistic thug like Bakr know about running a country?

These Muslims need to learn their religion. Who was more oppressive than al-Hajjaaj who actually killed Companions of the Muhammad (salAllahu alayhi was Sallam)?? Who could be more vile than that? And yet, here is statement of al-Hasan al-Basri (a Tabiee): “Know - may Allaah pardon you - that the tyranny of the kings is a retribution (niqmah) from among the retributions of Allaah the Most High. And Allaah’s retributions are not to be faced with the sword, but they are to be faced with taqwaa and are repelled with supplication and repentance, remorse (inaabah) and abstention from sins. Verily, when the punishments of Allaah are met with the sword, are more severe. And Maalik bin Deenaar narrated to me that al-Hajjaaj (Ibn Yoosuf) used to say, “Know that every time you commit a sin Allaah will bring about a punishment from the direction of your ruler (sultaan)”. And I have also been told that a person said to al-Hajjaaj, “Do you do such and such with the Ummah of Muhammad (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam)?” So he replied, “For the reason that I am the punishment of Allaah upon the people of Iraaq, when they innovated into their religion whatever they innovated, and when they abandoned the commands of the their Prophet - alaihis salaam - whatever they abandoned.” (Adaab Hasan al-Basri, of Ibn al-Jawzee, pp.119-120, by way of Mu’aamalat ul-Hukkaam, of Abdus-Salaam al-Burjis). www.sahihmuslim.com/sps/downloads/pdf/MNJ160006.pdf
